‘Afterwords’
Brooklyn Arts And Design Center
Featuring the Artwork of Mactruque
and a Special Performance by 1919.
Review by Nathan Thorin

The night was young, and the stage was set. When first entering the Brooklyn center for this art opening one was immediately hit in the senses by a multimedia sculpture of sorts drawing you into the 'Afterwords' mindset. A typed intro to Mactruque's most recent show brought you in. It hung over a push button typewriter with a cryptic message, followed by a painting on an easel. Hand scribbled notes, used typecast, and well printed titles all told the tale that was at hand...if you could read between the lines. This sense of beauty in chaos and paint set the tone for the entirety of the show that was set all around the main hall of the Brooklyn Center.
Walking around the room from painting to painting, one felt as if a story was unfolding before you. This was not just an exhibit of paintings, as you were also shown the artist's notes giving further depth into the creative process. Following from painting, to cryptic title, to tacked up notes, I was enjoying piecing the story together within my minds eye. There were still a few paintings left to view when the artist himself began the show with a few soulful tunes on an acoustic guitar.
After the short set by Mactruque, 1919 began to tune up. The audience was primed and ready. Dustin Greer pelted out his usual brand of sultry love tunes, and worked up the crowd to accept a few new arrangements. Just when you thought you knew 1919, they've progressed. The new 1919 brings in a few electronic components ala the pianist virtuoso Tom Bennett. These new songs would fit right in on the dance floor.
'Afterwords' was an insightful and inspiring night. You won't want to miss the next show that either Mactruque or 1919 grace with their respective talents.
