interview by Whitney Weiss
First, I just wanted to say that we've been listening to
Monstertruckdriver nonstop in the Movement Magazine offices and it's
great.
Muchas gracias!
You
have your own record label, Shitkatapult. What inspired you to start
it?
I
used to have a band called Stormbow and we won a band competition and
the first price was a few days in a pro studio. After the recordings,
we (Marcus Stotz and me) decided to start a label and put that shit
out. That was 1996…at the same time lots of our friends just started
getting into electronic music so we decided to collect their tracks
and release compilations (strike01&02). The rest is history, haha....
Describe the process of making Monstertruckdriver.
Turn
up the speakers at maximum volume, smoke a shit load of weed (no
alcohol in the studio!) and don’t leave the studio for days or weeks.
Is
there a specific song on the record that you feel exemplifies your
sound?
Maybe it is monstertruckdriver that exemplifies my sound best since it
contains all the elements I'm known best for. And that's the SHUFFLE
and the GNARZ.
What
was the record you heard that made you want to make your own music?
There wasn’t a specific record. It was more the fact that I didn’t
want to make any more compromises about sound and/or arrangements with
my band members. So I bought a drum machine and started working on my
own music.
Who
of the people you get compared to do you actually think you sound
like?
I
don’t get compared to anybody and I don’t sound like anybody.
Miss
Kitten guests on one of the tracks. How did that collaboration come
about?
In
Berlin everybody knows everybody and compared to other cities people
in Berlin work together and not against. We met at party where I blew
her away with my sound ;-) we became friends and decided to do a track
together.
Who
are some other musicians you feel deserve more exposure?
f.e.
all my shit artists hahaha.... and that’s what I’m working on.
What's your favorite fringe benefit of being a musician?
To
get free drinks at the bar. Cheers.
What
will your live show be like?
Loud, intense & something you will remember.
After you finish your European shows, what do you have planned?
I
come to the states in November. December are some more shows in Europe
and January I’m gonna be on holiday.
