Album Out June 25!! Slick and ultimately musical, their breakbeat-infected, mood-shifting, sexy-ass sound provides the perfect soundtrack to an entire spectrum of environments - from sweat-soaked dance floors to house parties to the backs of limousines. That's why Counterfeit, Cirrus' third, most diverse album to date, is slated to be utterly inescapable. Cirrus is the brainchild of partners Aaron Carter and Stephen Barry. "Superstar DJ," the infamous first single from Drop the Break, their debut, slapped them onto Billboard's dance charts in 1997. Back on a Mission, Cirrus' 1998 follow-up, was virtually eaten alive by video game, movie, and television music programmers hungry for the band's uncanny beatsmithing and tune-writing talents. (Zoolander, Snatch, Big Trouble, MTV, and ESPN, just to name a few, have all recently taken advantage, so-to-speak.) What sets Cirrus apart from other music producers is their jaw-dropping incarnation as a live band - a rarity in the electronic music community. Through diverse instrumentation and the addition of up-and-coming vocalist, Laura Derby, Cirrus creates a cinematic sound that crosses all modern music boundaries. Keep an eye out for HOT remixes and even HOTTER live dates! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SUBLIMINAL SESSIONS presents Frankie Knuckles at CLUB SHELTER on Thursday, 5/2 On May 2nd Subliminal Sessions presents legendary house music pioneer Frankie Knuckles playing Club Shelter (20 W 39th St) from 10 PM-7 AM. The Godfather of House, New York1s own Frankie Knuckles, has been rockin' da house since the early 1970's, years before the disco boom, which proved to be the flowering of modern dance music. Ten years later he was in Chicago, putting together megamixes of old disco hits with new drum-machine percussion for an appreciative audience at crucial clubs like the Music Box and the Warehouse. Another decade on from those first formative steps for house music, Knuckles was back in his New York home, working as a producer and remixer for the biggest pop stars in the business and serving as resident DJ at hot spots such as The Sound Factory and The Paradise Garage. His career spans more time than any other dance producer and without him, the landscape would be immeasurably different. Future guests in May/June include Darren Emerson, Roger Sanchez' birthday bash, and of course the man himself, Erick Morillo, appearing all night long. " Best Club Night 2002" - New York Magazine " the spirit of Shelter- if it was ever gone- is definitely back " - Time Out NY Upcoming Subliminal Sessions dates 5/2 Frankie Knuckles 5/9 Erick Morillo 5/16 Erick Morillo, Darren Emerson & Seb Fontaine 5/23 Roger Sanchez birthday party ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BEDROCK/PIONEER SET TO RELEASE "BEDROCK 'COMPILED AND MIXED' CHRIS FORTIER" ON JUNE 11 FORTIER TO TOUR NORTH AMERICA IN SUPPORT OF NEW MIX "The next installment of Bedrock's 'Compiled and Mixed' series comes from one of America's hardest working DJ's, Chris Fortier. His enthusiasm about the music has rightly brought him to the forefront of progressive house, and it's this passion and quality that shines through on this mix." -- John Digweed, 2002 On June 11, Bedrock in association with Pioneer Records will release the highly-anticipated third installment of Bedrock's 'Compiled and Mixed' CD series, BEDROCK 'COMPILED AND MIXED' CHRIS FORTIER, a double disc featuring exclusive cutting-edge tracks by Universal Agents ("Solomonic Agents"), Meat Katie ("My Little Dancing Girl"), Steve Porter and John Debo ("Deported" [Heavy mix]), Coco da Silva ("@Night") and Angel Moraes ("Turn It Up" [I-Jack remix]). Produced and mixed by CHRIS FORTIER, one of the most relentless promoters of progressive house music in America, this set of music displays his prime DJ skills and keen music selection. In support of the release, FORTIER will embark on the Bedrock - Chris Fortier CD Release Tour, a 25-city North American DJ tour beginning on May 8 at Fluid in Philadelphia. FORTIER approaches DJing and production with a work ethic that's rare in the music industry. For the last decade, he has toured around the world appearing in most of the major clubs of North America, Europe, Asia and beyond. He is one of the most active DJ's booked by the Balance Promote Group, an agency he founded with partner Jimmy Van M. Its roster boasts some of the world's top international DJ's such as John Digweed, Sasha, Dave Seaman, Steve Lawler and Anthony Pappa. Prior to the formation of the Balance Promote Group, FORTIER, along with Van M, created Balance Promote Record Pool, the first import promotional pool company in America set up to promote UK and European dance music domestically. Today it is one of the largest and most respected pools, keeping the world's leading DJ's such as Danny Tenaglia, Jimmy Van M, Sandra Collins, Max Graham and Dave Ralph stocked with the freshest progressive music being pressed on vinyl today. On the production side CHRIS FORTIER is one-half of the production duo and label co-founder of FADE. Together with partner Neil Kolo, they have remixed the likes of BT, Sarah McLachlan, DJ Tiesto and Delerium. Their remix of the latter group's single "Silence" now lays claim to selling over 1,000,000 copies world-wide. Most recently, FADE remixed "Purify," a single by RCA Victor Records debut artist Balligomingo which made its debut this week (April 20 issue) in the #3 spot on Billboard's Hot Dance Breakouts chart. A sampling of FORTIER's production work can be found on disc 2 of 'Mixed And Compiled' with his song "Losing Wait." So much in fact, that many clubs would rather book Dj's than bands. However, like any music form, there are a lot of Dj's out there but only a handful who really stand out in the ranks. Dj Ferry Corsten has no problem proving his musical talents, and as far as I am concerned he is one the best Dj's I have had the pleasure of listening to. His list of remixes alone reads like an encyclopedia. This Rotterdam native has honed his skills remixing bands such as, U2, Apoptygma Berzerk, Cygnus X, Binary Finary, Moby, William Orbit and many, many more. As you can see his talents as a producer and remix artist are sought out by some of the best known musicians all over the globe. The inspiration for Global Transmissions 02 was none other than the clubber's capital of the world, the Island of Ibiza. This beautiful lush island paradise, off the coast of Spain, has played host to some of the top Dj's in the buisness. So, what better place to have in mind when laying down a trance set of epic proportions. Ferry has some choice pics for his playlist such as "System F, Eon, Delerium, and Oceanlab." Many of the other artists I was really not familar with, but this is not surprising, considering the number of trance and house artists on the scene today. The entire album from start to finish is absolutely flawless (but you would expect nothing less from Corsten anyway ) and it really does capture the feeling of a romantic night in an island paradise. This is the type of trance I like, soothing but energetic at the same time. It's not surprising that one of the best tracks is "Clear Blue Water" by Oceanlab remixed by Corsten himself. Also, cuts by Alibi, Rising Star, and Sunscreem Vs. Push are also incredible. Overall, this is an exceptional trance compilation. Corsten has the midas touch on whatever music he spins or reworks. If you buy one trance CD this year, this one should be it. And, whether dancing or relaxing, this CD captures just the right feeling for both. Great job Ferry! -Craig Harvey ![]() SIMPLY JEFF BREAKBEAT MASSIVE MOONSHINE RECORDS/ 2002 It seems that every time you turn around someone puts out a D.J. mix on cd. Now whether or not it is worth listening to or is even worth buying is hard to tell, especially when you consider just how many continuous mix cd’s are in circulation. For those of you like me who have doubts about the before mentioned topics I would like to offer a little consolation. In every genre of electronic music at least one artist has the skills to really put together a decent D.J. mix. This time around that artist is Simply Jeff. I feel that the title of Simply Jeff’s latest release says exactly what this cd is all about. Breakbeat Massive is a stunning triumph for fans of nuskool breaks. From track selection to flawless mixing technique, Simply Jeff spins the funk like a seasoned pro. Much like his previous in the mix releases, Breakbeat Massive weaves its way from underground L.A. breaks to Florida style funk to the U.K.’s finest nuskool anthems. Jeff’s notorious reputation for dropping bombs on the dance floor holds true while pushing out big names of the genre like Jackal & Hide, Eon, Bassbin Twins and Uberzone. I have to admit that I like this cd, even though I’m not the biggest fan of breakbeat. Simply Jeff has taken breaks to the level it should be. -ALEX PAGAN ![]() Basement Jaxx “Where’s Your Head At?” XL/Astralwerks Usually DJ-types and uber-fans are the only ones spending their money on maxi-singles. It’s time for you to wipe that notion from your mind and pick “Where’s Your Head At?” up ASAP. Basement Jaxx, a talented electronic outfit who throw funk and disco to their luscious beats, has here a maxi-single chock full of remixes you’ll actually enjoy for four, not one, songs. First, there are five versions of the title track. Standouts include the Stanton Warriors remix and the Jaxx Nite dub (heavier on the drums, crunchier on the notes). If that’s not enough, pop this CD into your computer and you can watch the video for the song. After that, there are two versions of “Jus 1 Kiss”, which is way more house with a disco-groove in it’s Re-Edit version, then Basement Jaxx’s “Twilite”, which is atmospheric with an organic, almost Eastern feel to it. I was expecting versions of “Where’s Your Head At?” to make me happy, make me dance, make me drive faster. But I was absolutely not expecting an “acoustic” version of that rather-annoying “Romeo” song (you know you can sing it: “You know I wish you’d make your mind up. Coz when we get it on it’s so-so. You used to be my Romeo”), much less expecting it to be good. Sort of like when Travis did their organic version of Britney Spears’s “Hit Me Baby One More Time”, this stripped-down version of “Romeo” allows the inner-soul of an otherwise-vacant pop song shine, accompanied only by subtle horns, a reoccurring keyboard line, and some finger snaps. -Whitney Weiss ______________________ DJ’s We are currently compiling a listing of local and regional DJ listings to add to the Headphone Hookah Lounge.
