Code-Names
Paintings by Shaun Thurston
Ames Prosperes
Review by Nathan Thorin
For the month of March Shaun Thurston put together a great body of work
for Ames Prosperes entitled "Code Names". Painted on mounted board, the
show was all tied around the "Code Names" of Shaun's subjects; names made
up on the spot to match the close-up faces of people he knows.
Shaun's easily recognizable style is quickly growing. In this new show it
seems as if one can see an expanded use of his pallette, tending toward a
subtle depth of colour. Shaun's brush strokes are loose and confident,
often allowing his strong lines to drip, and scraping texture into the
colours. This effect along with the loosely shown nails assembling the
frames make for a fresh, raw feel.
This is a clean mesh of folk and graffiti, with a strong root in
psychedelia. This is art to wrap your mind around.
