MOVEMENT spoke with UDTV frontman “Wolfman” about the creation of UDTV and where he plans to take it in the future...
1. Give me a little background on yourself, i.e., how you got or chose to be "Wolfman", age, background in broadcasting (if any)...
Nickname: I didn't choose the name, it chose me. About 7 years ago or so, I walked into a bar looking for a friend of mine dressed in all black, with nail polish, and a beard. In describing me to my friend, the bar back said “some freaky dude that looks like the Wolfman came looking for you.” The name Wolfman stuck ever since. Now I have a full beard and a 22 inch goatee.
AGE: 29. Originally from Long Island, NY I have been living in Gainesville for about 10 years. Yankee by birth, southern by the Grace of God.
Broadcasting Background: I was a DJ for an FM radio station for 3 years and then produced a radio show called The Basement. I also was sound engineer for two TV shows on Cox Cable in Gainesville, Ocala. I also helped film and engineer commercials. I ran sound for numerous University of Florida and Santa Fe Community College events including Battle of the Bands an Jacre’ Brazil. I now run sound at Brick City Music Hall. I also wrote for and was a photographer for Fusion Magazine. I'm currently producing bands, music videos, commercials, and so on through www.MTHeadEmpire.com.
2. How and why you decided to start this project.
There hasn't been a good music video show in Gainesville since 1996 when Ground Zero was airing. I have been working on Underground Downtown and www.UDTV.info for over two years and have gone through many partners and volunteers. I wanted to showcase local bands in a way that would help boost the local music scene. Many times I thought that my vision would never be completed. Now, we are finally on the air and booking shows and making a big impact in Gainesville. TV and music videos are such great tools to promote CD, merchandise, gigs, and what not. Underground Downtown is changing the world one band at a time.
Vision for the Future: To air in Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, Miami and Georgia. We are also working on UDTV: Industrial/Gothic, UDTV: Punk Rawk, UDTV: Short Films, and Underground Downtown Radio. We are also looking to ad lots of video clips, interviews, outakes and MP3's on www.UDTV.info.
3. How many people you have on staff helping you out.
The core is three of us. Wolfman is the main dude and is in charge of Audio, production, writing, programming, websites, and toilet bowl scrubbing. Dirt is in charge of all video taping and editing. Jennifer takes care of everything else. We also have about 15 volunteers, whom without we would be lost. Thanks to everyone that supports us and local, independent bands.
