Global Transmissions 02
Dj Ferry Corsten

Moonshine records

Dj's have become a huge sensation in todays ever growing music industry. So much in fact, that many clubs would rather book Dj's than bands. However, like any music form, there are a lot of Dj's out there but only a
handful who really stand out in the ranks. Dj Ferry Corsten has no problem proving his musical talents, and as far as I am concerned he is one the best Dj's I have had the pleasure of listening to. His list of remixes alone reads like an encyclopedia. This Rotterdam native has honed his skills remixing bands such as, U2, Apoptygma Berzerk, Cygnus X, Binary Finary, Moby, William Orbit and many, many more. As you can see his talents as a producer and remix artist are sought out by some of the best known musicians all over the globe.
The inspiration for Global Transmissions 02 was none other than the clubber's capital of the world, the Island of Ibiza. This beautiful lush island paradise, off the coast of Spain, has played host to some of the top Dj's in the buisness. So, what better place to have in mind when laying down a trance set of epic proportions. Ferry has some choice pics for his playlist such as "System F, Eon, Delerium, and Oceanlab." Many of the other artists I was really not familar with, but this is not surprising, considering the number of trance and house artists on the scene today. The entire album from start to finish is absolutely flawless (but you would expect nothing less from Corsten anyway ) and it really does capture the feeling of a romantic night in an island paradise. This is the type of trance I like, soothing but energetic at the same time. It's not surprising that one of the best tracks is "Clear Blue Water" by Oceanlab remixed by Corsten himself. Also, cuts by Alibi, Rising Star, and Sunscreem Vs. Push are also incredible.
Overall, this is an exceptional trance compilation. Corsten has the midas touch on whatever music he spins or reworks. If you buy one trance CD this year, this one should be it. And, whether dancing or relaxing, this CD captures just the right feeling for both. Great job Ferry!

SIMPLY JEFF
BREAKBEAT MASSIVE

MOONSHINE RECORDS/ 2002

It seems that every time you turn around someone puts out a D.J. mix on cd. Now whether or not it is worth listening to or is even worth buying is hard to tell, especially when you consider just how many continuous mix cd’s are in circulation. For those of you like me who have doubts about the before mentioned topics I would like to offer a little consolation. In every genre of electronic music at least one artist has the skills to really put together a decent D.J. mix. This time around that artist is Simply Jeff.
I feel that the title of Simply Jeff’s latest release says exactly what this cd is all about. Breakbeat Massive is a stunning triumph for fans of nuskool breaks. From track selection to flawless mixing technique, Simply Jeff spins the funk like a seasoned pro. Much like his previous in the mix releases, Breakbeat Massive weaves its way from underground L.A. breaks to Florida style funk to the U.K.’s finest nuskool anthems. Jeff’s notorious reputation for dropping bombs on the dance floor holds true while pushing out big names of the genre like Jackal & Hide, Eon, Bassbin Twins and Uberzone.
I have to admit that I like this cd, even though I’m not the biggest fan of breakbeat. Simply Jeff has taken breaks to the level it should be.

Basement Jaxx
“Where’s Your Head At?”

XL/Astralwerks

Usually DJ-types and uber-fans are the only ones spending their money on maxi-singles. It’s time for you to wipe that notion from your mind and pick “Where’s Your Head At?” up ASAP. Basement Jaxx, a talented electronic outfit who throw funk and disco to their luscious beats, has here a maxi-single chock full of remixes you’ll actually enjoy for four, not one, songs. First, there are five versions of the title track. Standouts include the Stanton Warriors remix and the Jaxx Nite dub (heavier on the drums, crunchier on the notes). If that’s not enough, pop this CD into your computer and you can watch the video for the song. After that, there are two versions of “Jus 1 Kiss”, which is way more house with a disco-groove in it’s Re-Edit version, then Basement Jaxx’s “Twilite”, which is atmospheric with an organic, almost Eastern feel to it.
I was expecting versions of “Where’s Your Head At?” to make me happy, make me dance, make me drive faster. But I was absolutely not expecting an “acoustic” version of that rather-annoying “Romeo” song (you know you can sing it: “You know I wish you’d make your mind up. Coz when we get it on it’s so-so. You used to be my Romeo”), much less expecting it to be good. Sort of like when Travis did their organic version of Britney Spears’s “Hit Me Baby One More Time”, this stripped-down version of “Romeo” allows the inner-soul of an otherwise-vacant pop song shine, accompanied only by subtle horns, a reoccurring keyboard line, and some finger snaps.
