Local musician Rebecca Zapen has an aesthetically pleasing voice and understands how to use it within the context of different songs. Hummingbird has originals as well as interpretations of some standards. On "Andrea," Zapen places her voice gently amongst the jazzy instruments but knows when to belt it out; elsewhere on the CD she demonstrates a knowledge of when to hold back and when to let loose that many vocalists never quite pick up. Though the genre itself may not be your thing, there is no denying Rebecca Zapen has talent. It's always nice when a local artist reinforces the idea that more comes out of Jacksonville than southern rock and pop-punk.
