“...drugs
that awaken your third eye and make you realise how we are being fucked by
the powers that control the media, that keep the good little consumers
stupid, are illegal...” Give us the low down, tell us where you hail from, how you got started Dj-ing, what year, what influenced you, who helped you get started, who taught you to spin, or if you are self taught, what the first club or party you spun at, etc. "Started in my bedroom, 92, everything influenced me, I taught myself, my first residency was at Cafe de Paris in London, I convinced the promoter to book me if I filled the club with my mates, I was a student at the time, I packed the place and got a residency." Do you produce your own music or strictly DJ. If you do produce your own music will you, or do you take it out live? If so what project(s) are you currently pursuing? "Yes I produce my own music, Iam working on my debut artist album. Hoping to take it live." Can you give us any on the road or wild adventure stories? (music related or otherwise) "On tuesday night I played in Tucson, New Mexico, in an old theatre, my basslines were so heavy a huge chunk of the ceiling (110 ft above) fell down about 18 inches from my right arm. I was very nearly dead. We stopped the show." What do you do in your time away from the turntables? "Make music, do e-mails, have a label, smoke weed. Listen to more music, surf, snowboard." If sex were a flavor, what would it taste like to you? "Pussy." Fill in the blank: My ideal paradise would be: "Stranded with Penelope Cruz on a beautiful island with a great dub collection, kick ass stereo, filthy marijuana plantation, perfect peeling left hand break, a perpetually stocked refrigerator with vodka cranberry, the worlds best sushi chef and no chance of being rescued." What sets your dj style/music apart from everything else that's out there? "I play break beats with the energy of a house dj, but with the raw vibe of a hip hop dj. I only play great records, old or new, not records that are cool 'cos no one else has got them." What is your overview on the drug aspect of the dance culture, from the DJ perspective? And do you think it is destroying, aiding or ineffective to "the scene?" "Since man was conscious (and possibly before) he has looked to alter his state with drugs. Denying or making any drug illegal is a fantastically ridiculous idea. If we spent 10% of what we spend on locking people up on education, drugs would not be a ‘problem’” How, or do you see differences in the attitude toward drugs domestically and the global scene and how they play a role in the dance music culture? "They play a role in any culture. The whole world is fucked in the head when it comes to its policy on drugs. I find it intriguing that drugs that awaken your third eye and make you realize how we are being fucked by the powers that control the media, that keep the good little consumers stupid are illegal, (such as marijuana or mushrooms) yet the ones that do absolutely nothing positive for you (i.e. alcohol, tobacco) are legal. Coincidence? I think not. How do they play a role in dance culture? Just the same as the role in human culture in its entirety, they are an undeniable part of it, always have been, always will be. Illegality just makes it a problem. If ecstasy was legal it would be pure, no one would get sick. If Heroin was legal, no one would die from smack cut with shit and no one would kill and steal to get money to get a fix. Not that I condone heroin, but you see my point." What, if anything would you change about yourself? "I'd have an even bigger penis (and a slightly smaller ego)" Give us a run down of the next few events you are playing: "Marine Parade night at Shine NYC, Manchester UK, Newcastle UK, 'On tour' album launch, Brighton UK, Australia tour, Creamfields Argentina, West coast USA." |
