UPDATE: JUNE 30th 2004
The Prodigy
‘Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned’
Record Label: Maverick/XL
Release Date: September 14, 2004
‘Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned’, the brand new album from The
Prodigy will be released by Maverick/XL on Tuesday the 14th of September
2004. The album features 12 Liam Howlett penned tracks, including first
single ‘Girls’ which finds The Prodigy returning to their old skool
roots, with the focus firmly on the beats.
‘Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned’ is a trashy, adrenalised,
sleaze-funk masterpiece. For this album, Liam has recorded vocals and
treated them like samples, using them to create an overall sound - the
guests who have partaken in the process include Juliette Lewis (‘Hot
Ride), Princess Superstar (‘Memphis Bells’), Ping Pong Bitches
(‘Girls’), Twista (‘Get Up Get Off’), Shahin Badar ( ‘Get Up Get Off’),
Kool Keith ( ‘Wake Up Call’, ‘You’ll Be Under My Wheels’), Liam
Gallagher (‘Shoot Down’) and Paul Jackson (‘Action Radar’). All tracks
were written, programmed and assaulted by Liam Howlett.
The Prodigy’s line-up stays the same and will be returning for live
dates later in the year.
The Prodigy are set to release a special version of a track from their
forthcoming album 'Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned' direct to their
fans on June 28th at 18.00hrs GMT from
http://www.alwaysoutnumbered.com
Titled, 'Memphis Bells', the track will be exclusively available online
as a digital download with a difference. Available in a strictly
limited edition of 5,000, each of the 5,000 downloads will be a unique
variation of the track, accompanied with a unique variation of the
artwork. The digital release of 'Memphis Bells' marks a world first
from one of music's true innovators, The Prodigy. Unlike most bands,
they're utilising the latest online music technology to exclusively
unveil the first track from their new album, 'Always Outnumbered, Never
Outgunned', direct to the desktops of their fans.
Like the concept of the Warhol/Monroe painting (featuring multiple
different versions of the original work of art), fans will be able to go
onto a site and create their own unique version of the track. Through
the interface which will include a printable sleeve, unique to the mix,
fans will be able to choose from various bell melodys, drum options and
guitar options, then have the choice of type of mix - an original mix,
a headphone mix for your iPod, a bass heavy mix for DJ's and a 5.1
surround sound mix. The fans can then select which mix they require
and purchase the track for £2.00. Simple, and as unique, as that!
Each downloaded track and piece of artwork will be individually numbered
to create a genuinely personal limited edition.

PIXIES WRITE AND RECORD FIRST NEW
SONG IN THIRTEEN YEARS
"Bam Thwok" Will Make Its Debut Tonight via Apple's iTunes
OK, all of you Pixies fans, the moment you've been waiting for has
arrived - the PIXIES have written and recorded a brand new song, the
band's first in thirteen years, and you can get it starting at Midnight
tonight exclusively on Apple's popular iTunes Music Store. "Bam Thwok"
was penned by Kim Deal and produced and recorded by the Pixies at Stagg
Street Studios in Los Angeles this past March. The 2:35 "Bam Thwok,"
with Deal singing lead, can be downloaded from the iTunes Music Store
for 99-cents (http://www.apple.com/itunes/).
The music for "Bam Thwok" had its genesis in a chord progression that
Deal had been toying with for a while, and the lyrics from an art book
she found discarded on a city street a number of years ago while on
tour. "From the handwriting, you could tell that this book must have
belonged to a little kid," Deal recounts. "This kid had written a short
story, a paragraph really, about a party that took place in another
universe, about people and monsters that were partying together. That's
what provided the inspiration for the lyrics." The song is a musical
romp, and features a driving beat, searing guitar, and the whimsical
chorus, "Love. Bang. Crash. Wakka, wakka, Bam Thwok." "It's a song
about loving everyone," Deal added, "showing good will to everyone."
The Pixies - Deal (bass, vocals,) Frank Black (vocals, guitar), Joey
Santiago (guitar), David Lovering (drums) - arranged and rehearsed the
song at Santiago's home studio, which includes a 15-second carousel-esque
organ solo performed and recorded many years ago by Santiago's
father-in-law while he was doing missionary work in the Philippines.
"That's a great piece of music," added Deal, "and it fits perfectly."
"'Bam Thwok' is a really good song," said Frank Black. "Recording it
was a nice way for us to break the ice after twelve years. The
recording process was very relaxed and it didn't feel like twelve years
had passed."
As the Pixies are not currently affiliated with a record label, they had
the luxury of making their first new song available to fans around the
globe at a low price and instantaneously, something that iTunes could
easily provide. The Pixies plan to perform "Bam Thwok" at concerts on
their current European and upcoming North American tour dates.

THEE THIRD COUMING OV PSYCHIC TV IS PTV3
performing
Fri 6/25 - Washington, DC 9:30 Club
Sat 6/26 - Pittsburgh, PA The EYE
Sat 7/3 - New York, NY Bowery Ballroom
w/ Michael Gira opening doing a solo, acoustic set
The current lineup for Psychic TV being:
Douglas Rushkoff - keyboards, vocals (see www.rushkoff.com for more
information)
Electric Eddie - drums (of "The Toilet Boys" and "Candyass")
Isaiah Singer - Lead Guitars, vocals
Alice Genese - Bass Guitar, vocals (also of "Candyass")
Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge - Sampling Keyboard (also of "Thee
Majesty")
Genesis Breyer P-Orridge - lead voices, noise bass guitar (also of
Throbbing Gristle and "Thee Majesty")
Psychic TV was first born in 50 Beck Road, Hackney in 1981.
Guitarist Alex Fergusson was trying to convince his longtime friend
Genesis P. Orridge to return to active duty making music following
the "termination" of Throbbing Gristle, the seminal Industrial
ensemble the latter had fronted. One day, he found P. Orridge's
poem "Just Drifting" lying on a water heater and challenged his
friend to form a band with him if he could successfully set it to
music – which was done within 24 hours. Adding Peter Christopherson,
the group commenced a career of creating profoundly influential,
highly innovative, and unflinching provocative music, with the
details of its packaging, marketing and lifestyle of the musicians
creators being crucial components of the aesthetic package.
Over some 14 odd years, Psychic TV recorded and released dozens of
live and studio albums. Just recently they retrieved ownership to
all this material and are currently preparing a systematic re-issue
program as well as releasing previously unavailable material. When
Psychic TV was terminated in turn in the mid 90's Genesis would
pursue further musical goals with like Thee Majesty, Cottom Ferox and
so on. In addition, P. Orridge recently reunited with the other
members of Throbbing Gristle working on a variety of new recordings,
new compositions as well as reconstructions of older repertoire. In
2003, P. Orridge announced a new line-up of Psychic TV which had its
public unveiling at the Coral Room in NYC that December.
The full history of Genesis Breyer P. Orridge and his varied musical
exploits of the past 3 decades as well as his socio-cultural (or
should that be politico-sexual? Or all the above!) adventures would
fill a book (in fact last year Soft Skull published Painful but
Fabulous:
The Life and Art of Genesis P-Orridge ) and I will send further
info in separate notes.

BLACK SABBATH TO HEADLINE OZZFEST 2004
FIRST LIVE APPEARANCE SINCE 2001
LOS ANGELES, May 18, 2004 ¯ Call it a mandate from the people. Call
it a rumor that just won't die. Call it what you want, but since the
April 27 release of the CD/DVD BLACK BOX: THE COMPLETE ORIGINAL BLACK
SABBATH (1970-1978), there's been enormous public demand for a Black
Sabbath tour. Original Black Sabbath members OZZY OSBOURNE, TONY
IOMMI and GEEZER BUTLER (as well as Osbourne-solo band member Mike
Bordin, on drums) – will storm the U.S., performing 26 shows on
OZZfest, starting July 10 in Hartford, Conn.
The reviews of Black Box have been phenomenal: Rolling Stone: "[Black
Box] sounds even better... in this eight-CD/one DVD set than it did
on vinyl... all the Sabbath you'll ever need. 4 STARS." Spin
noted, "Black Box collects the first eight albums... all skull-
crushingly heavy." For its part, Details declared: "This is evil,"
calling the anthology "a boot crushing a windpipe... teeth on bone."
And Time Out New York proclaimed, "Black Box compiles a body of work
more central to modern, popular music than that of any band since The
Beatles."
OZZfest had already unleashed the biggest buzz of the upcoming tour
season, with OZZY (now as a member of BLACK SABBATH) to headline the
main stage along with a fistful of rock legends, including a reunited
Judas Priest, Slayer, Dimmu Borgir, Superjoint Ritual (featuring Phil
Anselmo) and Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society. Fans checking out
OZZfest's Second Stage will get a real treat with a "get close to the
fans" set by headliners Slipknot. Hatebreed, Lamb of God, Atreyu and
10 other up-and-comers will keep (hell) fires burning there
throughout the day.
OZZfest.com is the place to get the best tickets to the "tour of the
summer" and obtain up-to-date information first.
OZZfest 2004 Is Looking For Raw Talent;
Auditions To Take Place From Coast To Coast
It's the rock & roll opportunity of a lifetime: Ozzy and Sharon
Osbourne are looking for the next great band to rock the OZZfest 2004
main stage alongside Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Slayer and more.
Auditions will be held coast-to-coast to find eight unsigned,
undiscovered bands to take part in a final competition yielding one
lucky winner. Not only will they share the same stage with rock
legends, but they'll also participate in a nationally televised
performance straight from OZZfest 2004. In addition, the winning
band will be awarded a coveted slot on the second stage at OZZfest
2005 as well as free music equipment and cash prizes.
Do you think you've got what it takes to rock the masses at
OZZfest? Prove it! The audition hotline is: (800) 688-5251 for
all the detailed info.
In-person auditions will be held in Los Angeles on June 11th and in
New York on June 18th.

THE ORB `Bicycles & Tricycles'
Release Date: August 3rd 2004
Sanctuary Records
New York, NY - The Orb will release their album Bicycles & Tricycles
on Sanctuary Records in August 2004. Long considered the originators
of ambient house music and catalysts to the rise of electronic music
in the charts, The Orb are now celebrated for a career of deftly free-
spirited, good-humored musical creativity.
"I believe in 12 year cycles," says The Orb's main protagonist, Alex
Paterson. "It's a Chinese thing, like the months of the year, the
beginning of a new chapter." And so this is how the Orb have gone
full cycle, from a burst onto the dance scene with their masterpiece
single "Loving You/A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules
From The Centre Of The Ultraworld", (often credited as the first
chill out club track) to today, with their new album Bicycles &
Tricycles.
The Orb's early releases on Big Life Records charted new territory in
dance music in the UK and America. The Orb's Adventures Beyond the
Ultraworld (1991), U.F. Orb (1992) and Live 93 (1993) mapped the
band's stratospheric creative development as legend grew around the
intensity and brilliance of their live shows. From this era came
the classic "Little Fluffy Clouds", which has since become synonymous
with the band and the era.
Once on Island Records, The Orb continued to expand creatively, with
Pomme Fritz (The Orb's Little Album) (1994) and commercially, with
Orbus Terrarum (1995). Orblivion (1997) was their best-selling album
to date, due in no small part to the radio success of the
track "Toxygene". They followed up with a `Best Of', entitled U.F.
Off (1998), and Cydonia (2001).
"My motivation comes from having the same desire I did when we first
started," explains Paterson. Bicycles & Tricycles is an entirely
modern effort with a pulse on 21st century dance and leftfield music,
and a return to the caliber of innovative recording that brought the
band critical and commercial acclaim. It features Alex's long-term
collaborators Thomas Fehlmann, Simon Phillips, John Roome and Jimmy
Cauty alongside UK MC's The Corpral and Soom-T.
The free-spirited Bicycles & Tricycles is full of traditional ORB
humor and darkness, love and loathing, intensity and simplicity,
embracing all the elements and contradictions that make Orb albums
unique. It allows for exploration into atmospherics and multilayered
sounds to get lost in. "The Land Of Green Ginger" is classic Orb
(with a guest appearance from the rooster of classic "Little Fluffy
Clouds") with quirky storytelling samples effectively transporting
you to another land. MC Soom-T provides the lyrical rhyming
on "Aftermath". "Prime Evil" layers sinister lyrics with twisted EFX
and bleeps. Meanwhile, the upbeat "Gee Strings" brings pop tempos to
life, while the dub-influenced downbeat of "Tower Twenty Three" slows
things down.
With their latest release, Bicycles & Tricycles, The Orb maintain the
right alchemy and continue on their uncharted trajectory into the
galaxy, opening up ears to a spectrum of undiscovered sounds. The
album will be supported by a live tour of the UK in May, and
accompanying DJ dates in the United States. Dr. Alex Paterson will be
available for select interviews.

SCOTT STAPP AND MARK TREMONTI READY NEW MATERIAL
FOR FIRST POST-CREED
RELEASES
One of the most successful songwriting partnerships and groups in the
history of the music business disbands after nearly a decade
together.
New York --- After nearly a decade together, Creed has decided to
disband. During their 8 years and 3 albums together (My Own Prison,
Human Clay, Weathered) Creed achieved countless Rock & Roll
milestones and sold over 30 million albums worldwide. With their
unprecedented success at radio and their captivating live shows,
Creed became one of the most successful acts to rule the charts over
the past ten years.
Creed songwriter/ guitarist Mark Tremonti has decided to join forces
with Creed drummer Scott Phillips, original Creed bassist Brian
Marshall and former Mayfield Four singer/ songwriter Myles Kennedy.
The new band, named Alter Bridge, will release their debut album on
Wind-up Records on August 10th of this year. Expect a promotional
acoustic tour of radio stations later this Summer, followed by a
worldwide tour to begin in late August or early September.
Creed songwriter / singer Scott Stapp has been busy in the studio
writing and recording over the past several months. His first post-
Creed recording will be featured on an album coming on August 31st
via Wind-up Records that will pool together superstar talent, as they
individually offer compositions inspired by the film The Passion of
the Christ. Simultaneously to tracking his contributions to the
Passion title, Stapp will continue to work with producer 7 Aurelius,
and has joined forces with Canadian rockers The Tea Party to work on
his solo debut.
On the dissolution of Creed, Tremonti commented, "It's kind of sad
to end a chapter of your life, but it's also exciting to be starting
a new one. We'll always be proud of the music we made with Creed, but
Alter Bridge gives me the opportunity to start over with a different
perspective and a more evolved direction. This band begins and ends
with the love of the music." Phillips continues, "Creed was
definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but I'm really excited to
be starting over as well. The most significant things that we are
taking from the Creed experience are the lessons that we learned. We
truly believe that the decisions we've made for our future are the
right ones. After writing and rehearsing the new material, we are
confident that we've made the right choices."
Stapp shared, "Creed was one of the most amazing journeys through
music and friendship I am blessed to say I was a part of. I made
memories I can never replace! I just want to thank the fans who
supported us and became a part of the Creed experience. We could not
have accomplished anything without you!(fans)."
Also in 2004, Wind-up Records will be releasing a Creed Greatest
Hits compilation. Details will be made available as plans for the
album take shape.

The finely crafted songs Produced and mixed by David Bendeth are

elements of
experimental and progressive rock, inspired vocal melodies bringing
singing

original and like no other
Candiria have been on hiatus for two years after a near death
experience; a
touring accident where the driver of an eighteen wheeler fell asleep at
the
wheel, hitting the bands van that exploded on impact, sending band and
crew
flying out of the vehicle all broken and bloody. This life altering
experience is the inspiration for the new CD - What Does Not Kill You.
Drummer Kenneth Schalk explains the accident was a turning point.a real
moment that makes you step back and take a look at life; it was also the
catalyst for us as a band to reaffirm doing what we do. We were always
motivated and passionate about our music, surviving this solidified that
emotion for us to stay true and continue to do what we do. See them on
tour
in June and July with Twelve Tribes, Misery Signals and 36 Crazy Fists.

We are anonymous slaves to time, class, occupation, sex, currency, and
the
underlying belief that this is acceptable. Twelve Tribes is a form of
opposition.
Twelve Tribes are not new to the scene - "The Rebirth of Tragedy" is
their
second full length release. TT has been a band for almost seven years
doing
it with a DIY approach. The band has paid their dues by numerous tours
with
Poison The Well, Every Time I Die, Blood Has Been Shed, Eighteen
Visions,
Bleeding Through and more.
Twelve Tribes pride themselves on their modern advancement of hardcore.
Heavily drawing influences from a cross cultural array of music such as
punk
rock, hip hop, classic rock, drum & bass as well as hardcore. Twelve
Tribes
songs leaves fans stunned on a physical and musical level, the intensity
and
emotion of the music is there but the artistic quality is what pulls
kids
in. "Our music is music that you can listen to not fight to - kids
really
appreciate us on a musical level. It's not everyday that other musicians
take notice of bands and get involved in the business side of the music
industry. Yet, Twelve Tribes have been sought out by the Lead singer of
Killswitch Engage Howard Jones to take them on for management. "Without
a
doubt Twelve Tribes is very unique; nobody has what they have, and
knowing
them as people as well as musicians made me jump at the opportunity to
get
involved. To me, this is what music is. something that can not be
labeled
and is its own entity - That is what Twelve Tribes is, and it is cool to
see
that people are actually getting it," explains Howard Jones.

Boys Night Out
Have been steadily touring their highly acclaimed Ferret Music release
Make
Yourself Sick. Just off of a tour with My Chemical Romance.then out in
July
with Saves The Day - next. Warped TOUR!!!
As stated by the Pit - "Make Yourself Sick is infused with sweeping
melodies, laced with murky and macabre pop sensibility. Every song
contains
an anthem-like, sing-along chorus, and is packed with brilliantly poetic
lyrics. This album flows effortlessly from crushing breakdowns, to
smooth
and haunting acoustic compositions, to poppy radio friendly singles; and
the
transitions are carried out as smoothly as a pill being slipped into
your
drink. With a rhythm section providing a powerful and impressive
backbone
for the album, there isn't even any need for guitars or vocals, there's
enough going on to keep the album on repeat as it is. The entire package
of
synthesizers, endless and diverse guitar melodies, tortured, infectious
vocals and the completely original and thundering rhythm section, makes
this
record the quintessential album to own this year. See the video on MTV2

UPDATE: May 10th 2004
Congress Threatens Live Music,
Fans and Music Industry Fight Back
Federal Bills Would Shut Down Concerts and Other Events and Hold
Organizers Liable for Drug Use of Patrons
Congress is considering two bills that would hold bands, DJs,
bartenders, promoters, venue owners, radio stations and others liable if
a patron uses drugs at a nightclub or concert. Legal experts and
business owners warn the legislation would devastate the music industry
and could spell the end of live music, especially large music festivals
like South by Southwest and Burning Man. Music fans, bar and nightclub
owners, and music promoters are launching a national campaign to defeat
the legislation.
“Members of Congress may be too old to go to concerts and dance their
butts off, but millions of voters are not,” said Bill Piper, Director of
National Affairs for the Drug Policy Alliance. “If politicians don’t
reject this legislation, these voters may dance their way to the voting
booth and vote these old fogies out.”
The Ecstasy Awareness Act (H.R. 2962) would throw anyone in jail who
“profits monetarily from a rave or similar electronic dance event
knowing or having reason to know” some event-goers may use drugs at the
event. Similarly, Section 305 of the CLEAN-UP Act (H.R. 834) makes it a
federal crime - punishable by up to nine years in prison - to promote
"any rave, dance, music, or other entertainment event, that takes place
under circumstances where the promoter knows or reasonably ought to know
that a controlled substance will be used or distributed."
Under the provisions of both bills, almost any music promoter, nightclub
owner or arena or stadium owner could be fined and jailed, because a
reasonable person knows that some people use marijuana and other drugs
at musical events. Business owners could be prosecuted even if they are
not involved in drugs – and even if they take steps to stop drug use on
their property. Dozens of music promoters and bar owners, as well as
national groups such as the ACLU, American Beverage Licensees (which
represents thousands of bars and nightclubs), and the International
Association of Assembly Managers (which represents arena and stadium
managers), signed letters to Congress earlier this year warning that the
CLEAN-UP Act “is a threat to free speech and musical expression, and
will undoubtedly harm innocent business owners.”
In response to both bills, the Drug Policy Alliance declared April 24th
a “Day and Night of Outrage” over the legislation and launched a
website,
www.protectlivemusic.org , to coordinate the work of thousands of
concerns music fans and business owners. Voters in dozens of cities,
from Billings, Montana to New York City are expected to take action on
April 24th, including circulating petitions to Congress, passing out
flyers, protesting, and holding fundraisers to raise money for the
campaign. The day and night of action kicks off a four-month national
campaign to stop the legislation, that will culminate in a concert on
the lawn of Congress in August. For a full list of tomorrow's events
please see:
http://www.protectlivemusic.org/outrage_gigs.htm .
The Alliance picked the term “outrage” to describe the day and night of
action to correspond with their “Outrageous” music CD the organization
will release this summer to raise money for the campaign to protect live
music. The Alliance chose to kick off the four-month campaign in April
because it’s the one-year anniversary of legislation that Congress
passed, known as the RAVE Act, making business owners liable for the
drug offenses of their patrons. That legislation, passed last April, was
used last May to shut down a political fundraiser in Billings, Montana
and music industry professionals contend it has had a serious chilling
effect on musical expression. The CLEAN-UP Act and Ecstasy Awareness Act
would make it even easier for the government to punish business owners
for the crimes of their customers.
“The government can’t even keep drugs out of its own schools and
prisons, yet it is seeking to punish business owners that can’t stop
their patrons from using drugs,” said Bill Piper. “If these bills become
law, innocent business owners could go to jail and music fans may be
unable to see their favorite artist live. That’s why business owners and
music fans are organizing to protect live music.”

Blink 182's Travis
Barker Launches La Salle Records
The Kinison and The Nervous Return are the first two acts signed to
Travis Barker's new label La Salle Records, distributed through Atlantic
Records. La Salle will also be releasing the upcoming Transplants
album.
"I wanted to put out great music" states Barker. "What artist wouldn't
want to help another artist with creative freedom? I saw The Nervous
Return 4 years ago and they were the reason I started a label in the
first place. I saw The Kinison in a club in Riverside, CA 3 years ago
and it's the best live band I've seen in 5 years."
The Kinison and The Nervous Return are both musically different from
that of Barkers' bands (Blink 182, The Transplants) but that's really no
surprise. According to Barker, "I'm not signing any specific genre of
music, just great music of any genre."
La Salle Records will release the debut full length entitled "What Are
You Listening To?" by The Kinison in May. The band are currently on a
national tour.
The Nervous Return just finished recording their album and will be
appearing on the side stage of the No Doubt/Blink 182 tour.
The Transplants will be recording their album in the next month and it's
scheduled for a release later this year.
Above everything, Barker says "I just want to be a sincere label."

BEASTIE BOYS TO
THE 5 BOROUGHS CONFIRMED FOR SUMMER 2004 RELEASE
It's official: The hiatus is back off again! Capitol will release
Beastie Boys' To The 5 Boroughs, the band's sixth album (and first
produced entirely by the Boys themselves) this summer.
Recorded on and off over the last two years at Beastie Boys' own studio
in downtown new York City, produced by the band and mixed by Supa
Engineer Duro, To The 5 Boroughs is the first proper Beastie Boys record
since 1998's quadruple-platinum Hello Nasty. Nasty sold nearly 700,000
week of release in the U.S. and entered at the top of virtually every
chart in every country in the world.
To The 5 Boroughs is, in keeping with its title, in large part homage to
the city that brought Mike D, Adrock and MCA together. From the
block-party rockers "Ch-Check It Out" and "Triple Trouble," to the
politically charged "Time To Build," and straight-up tribute "An Open
Letter To NYC," the record conjures the early '80s New York underground
B Boys came up in-but keeps one foot firmly in the future throughout,
especially on the unclassifiable "Oh Word?" and "Crawlspace."
To The 5 Boroughs' release will be preceded by "Ch-Check It Out"
debuting April 28 at radio and on iTunes. The "Ch-Check It Out" video
was recently directed by longtime Beastie Boys collaborator Nathanial
Hornblower ("Intergalactic," "Body Movin'," "So What'cha Want") and
features exclusive cameos from Lorne Greene and DeForest "Bones" Kelley.
Beastie Boys will be playing Japan's Summer Sonic Festival in Tokyo
August 7 and 8. Full world tour plans to be announced shortly.

THE SECRET IS OUT:
OTEP RETURN WITH "HOUSE OF SECRETS"
L.A. METAL OUTFIT'S SECOND ALBUM HITS JULY 27TH
HERALDED BY OZZFEST 2004 DATES
Capitol Records has set the upcoming release of "HOUSE OF
SECRETS," the eagerly awaited second album from acclaimed dark
metallists OTEP. The album - which follows 2002's triumphant debut, "SEVAS
TRA" - is due to arrive in stores coast to coast on July 27th.
"HOUSE OF SECRETS" was produced by Greg Wells, known for his
work with a diverse range of artists, including the Deftones, Michelle
Branch, and Elton John. The album - recorded late last year at Los
Angeles' Rocket Carousel Studios - features a stunning evolution in the
OTEP sound, a passionate, dangerous musical vision fuelled by the
remarkable creative artistry of singer/poet Otep Shamaya. Tracks such
as "Sepsis" and "Warhead" are both provocative and unsettling, marked by
Shamaya's howling vocals and uncompromising lyrical genius. The album
features guest drumming on six tracks by Slipknot/Murderdolls basher
Joey Jordison. Extreme, experimental and altogether explosive, "HOUSE
OF SECRETS" takes modern metal to a challenging, astonishing new plane.
OTEP will presage the album's release by returning to the
annual Ozzfest tour. The Los Angeles-based band - whose intense
performances were considered highlights of the 2001 and 2002 treks -
will be featured on the Second Stage roster, with dates kicking off July
10th at ctnow.com Meadows Music Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut (see
attached itinerary).
"SEVAS TRA," as well as 2001's debut ep, "JIHAD," immediately
established OTEP as a force to be reckoned with. "SEVAS TRA" - which
debuted in the #2 position on Billboard's "Heatseekers" chart of new and
developing artists upon its summer 2002 release - received widespread
critical acclaim, with Revolver praising the album as "not only powerful
and emotional but intensely personal as well." Alternative Press
declared that the album's "greatness lies in its creation of a modern
musical storm that would make even Slipknot blush." Gene Simmons'
Tongue continued that theme, hailing "SEVAS TRA" as "Slipknot with
estrogen."

SLIPKNOT'S
"DUALITY" DOMINATES!
#1 MOST ADDED AT ROCK RADIO FORMATS
New York, NY - Slipknot's single, "DUALITY" debuts as this week's #1
most added track at Modern and Active Rock radio. Over 100 stations
across the nation worked the record into their playlists, making this
one of the most triumphant radio kick-offs in Roadrunner Records
history. The tremendously successful kick-off to the radio campaign,
coupled with Slipknot's headlining stint on the Jagermeister Music Tour,
sets the stage for the release of the band's highly anticipated album,
VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES) on May 25, 2004.

UPDATE: APR. 7 2004
Waxploitation Records signs illbient collective Teargas & Plateglass;
Debut album set for late May release
“Teargas and Plateglass restores my faith that deep, dark music still
moves the masses.”
– KING BRITT
“Teargas & Plateglass throb like somnambulant aliens assaulting precinct
thirteen…ominous grooves "
- J.G. THIRLWELL (aka Foetus)
“Teargas & Plateglass has the makings of an instant classic. It has an
intensity which is hard to walk away from…a sound that is already light
years away from most everything else”
– Electronic Music
Los Angeles, California, 4/6/2004 – Reclusive artists are sometimes
difficult to describe. Teargas & Plateglass are no exception. Spending
the last few years purposefully under the radar, no one really knows
much about the media-shy, illbient anarchist collective. “We tend to
regret everything we say publicly,” says the band, “We don’t even really
like to talk about music.”
Since early 2001, the incarnation known as Teargas & Plateglass have
contributed abstract beat-inspired mellow-dramatic remix collaborations
for an array of artists including 311, Natacha Atlas, (International)
Noise Conspiracy, Tweaker featuring David Sylvian and Oba Funke
featuring Zap Mama.
2002 brought the arrival of Teargas & Plateglass’ first original work, a
collaboration with Ursula Rucker (famed spoken word poetess from The
Roots camp) titled “When We Are Ignorant.” The track appeared on the
critically acclaimed Being Black CD alongside tracks from DJ Spooky,
Rhettmatic (Beat Junkies), Rob Swift (X-Ecutioners), DJ Revolution,
Dilated Peoples and J5.
May 2004 will see the release of their self-titled debut CD. The album
provides an oscillating, intricate soundtrack of murky beats, somber
strings, wary synths and haunting vocals.
“We don’t know what we’re doing, in general”, says the band. “If you
asked us to explain how we did it, or re-create anything, we couldn’t.
Everything on the album was like being visited by hungry ghosts.”
For the album cover, Teargas & Plateglass selected art by legendary
photo-essayist Sebastiao Salgado, famed for his stark black and white,
humanistic imagery. Included on the album are songs with Lil Gong, as
well as previously unavailable remix collaborations with Natacha Atlas,
Oba Funke and Zap Mama.
Waxploitation is the record label for noted hip hop, electronic and rock
artists including Tha Alkaholiks, Tweaker, Dopestyle 1231, Teargas &
Plateglass, Tash, the Likwit Crew as well as the management HQ for
artists and producers including Danger Mouse, E-Swift, Chris Vrenna and
KutMasta Kurt

FLORIDA BASED ROCKERS 'START TROUBLE'
HIT THE ROAD IN SUPPORT OF THEIR DEBUT
RELEASE EVERY SOLUTION HAS ITS PROBLEM
ON TOUR WITH ALLISTER
Hailing from Jacksonville, FL, START TROUBLE--Luke Walker (lead vocals,
bass), Terry Case (guitar, background vocals), Allan Leavell (guitar)
and Mike Crews (drums) are a band with a whole lotta attitude and the
hook-filled music to back it up. START TROUBLE (formerly called TROUBLE
IS until recently when the found out that a heavy metal cover band
already owned the name) has already began to start the buzz as
Alternative Press Magazine says of the bands debut Every Solution Has
Its Problem-
"The reggae/rap/rock tunes on Every Solution Has Its Problem will rock
your next pool party in fine style" and of the bands fourth coming
single CHEMICAL "If Bob Dylan penned this chorus we'd phrase it as an
ingenious, brutal truth about the battle of the sexes"
--Alternative Press Magazine January 2004
The band debut CD 'Every Solution Has Its Problem', produced by John
Travis (Social Distortion, Sugar Ray, Kid Rock, Save Ferris, Monster
Magnet, and Buckcherry) -- frontman Luke Walker & company find the
crucial synaptic connection between punk-rock and hip-hop and link these
musical neurons together with sly blue humor, verbal sophistication, and
songs that speak the truth -- from philosophic musings to the outright
need to party.
In classic rock & roll style, the START TROUBLE band members live
together, in a house they jokingly claim is haunted, in Jacksonville,
Florida. The four-piece crank out hormonally charged punk-pop party
songs about everything from getting plastered to, well, getting laid.
Luke and his fellow founding Start Trouble member, guitarist Terry
Case, had played in various bands together since high school, but their
latest group, Ten High, had barely begun gigging around Jacksonville
when Matt Pinfield -- of MTV's "120 Minutes" fame, Matt had just started
an A&R job at Columbia Records -- heard a four-track demo of one of
Luke's solo songs, "Chemical," on a local radio show called "Native
Noise." Luke didn't even like the song at the time and had in fact
accidentally given the wrong tape to the show's DJ ("It was one of those
songs I just wrote and threw in the songbin," he shrugs), but the DJ was
nevertheless impressed -- as was Pinfield, who contacted the band and
offered them a contract with Columbia, just one day after they'd almost
signed with an indie label.
The hip-hop influence is evident on Every Solution Has Its Problem
(which Luke describes as "punk-pop with an alternative-rap twist"), not
just in some of its randy lyrics but also in the pumping, percussive
beats of tunes like "Non Stop," "Retaliate," "Throw The Covers Over Me,"
and the beatbox-driven, hilarious, self-explanatory bonus track, "Let's
Get Fucked Up." And onstage, it's these numbers that get the band in a
particularly party-hardy mood. "I really get into it when I sing, on the
hip-hop songs especially," says Luke. "I make a lot of faces; I might
even do some gyrating! I get to grab the mic and jump around and just
act crazy. It's a party on stage."
Ultimately it's all about fun and music for START TROUBLE -- a
surprisingly refreshing and welcome attitude amid the current growing
glut of angst-ridden, sad-sack rock bands that don't seem to realize
that rock 'n' roll is supposed to be nothing but a good time. That's a
big problem, but luckily, START TROUBLE has the solution.

KITTIE SHUNS OUTSIDE WORLD FOR RECORDING OF NEW ALBUM
NORTH BROOKFIELD, Mass. – Canadian female metal band Kittie has been
holed up in the isolation of Longview Farm Studios in Massachusetts for
three weeks working on its third full-length album, “Until the End.”
“The studio we are recording at is on a farm,” said drummer Mercedes
Lander. “At night you can hear the horses walking around in the
stables, which are located directly underneath us.”
Though lacking in nightlife, recording in a secluded area has enabled
Kittie to concentrate fully on the recording process with little
distraction from the outside world.
“It’s kind of interesting because we have nothing to do but focus on our
music,” Lander said. “Since we’ve been here we have left the premises
maybe three times in three weeks.”
The three-week recording period – though seemingly short for some bands
– has been more than adequate for Kittie to lay down the tracks. “This
is the longest we have ever had to record, so there seems to be plenty
of time to accomplish exactly what we need to do,” said
guitarist/vocalist Morgan Lander. “The atmosphere is really laid back,
and they have made us all feel right at home here. There is a lot of
history behind this place, so we were confident we could endure the
horse flies for three weeks.”
Bassist Jennifer Arroyo echoes Mercedes Lander’s sentiments: “We can
completely focus on our music…and the smell of horse sh*t is completely
charming!”
“Until the End” is scheduled for a summer release on Artemis Records.

THE BLOOD BROTHERS IN THE STUDIO,
RECORDING NEW ALBUM
The Blood Brothers, a critical favorite if ever there was one, are
currently in a Seattle studio laying down tracks for their fourth album,
the follow up to 2002’s much-praised “Burn Piano Island, Burn.” The
band is working with producer John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Unwound),
and is now three weeks into recording with a projected three more weeks
to go. The new CD, as yet untitled, is expected to be released in the
Fall, and with the incorporation of instruments such as cello, acoustic
piano, and accordion, it promises to be a departure from “Island.”
The band - vocalists Johnny Whitney and Jordan Blilie, guitarist Cody
Votolato, drummer Mark Gajadhar, and bassist Morgan Henderson - began
writing new songs last November. “Our songwriting process just flowed
this time, we were writing almost a song a day,” said Whitney, ”and by
January, had more than twenty. We needed a way to sort through the songs
and determine which ones we wanted to record.” So the band played many
of the new songs live while on a U.S. tour in February. “We’d never
played songs live before recording them,” added Whitney, “and doing it
gave us a sense of what worked and what didn’t. When we came home from
tour, we had made a lot of changes in the songs.”
According to Whitney, the recording process is going very well and is a
different experience from past sessions. “The biggest difference is that
we are so comfortable with each other now. Before, we were a little
awkward about the whole process, we weren’t sure what we wanted. Before
we recorded ‘Island,’ we’d only been in a studio as a band for a week.
This time, because we’re comfortable with each other, the music we’re
playing is so much more effortless. We also love working with John,”
Whitney added. “We’re big fans of the records he’s made, and appreciate
the fact that he’s an engineer as well as a producer.”
Whitney said that songs on the new album will be a bit of a departure as
well. “The new songs are less saturated with metaphors, they’re more
linear in terms of story lines,” he explained. “They’re more eclectic
than those on ‘Island,” and song to song, they are stylistically
different.” Some of the song titles include “Teen Heat,” ‘Peacock
Skeleton with Crooked Feathers,” and “Trash Flavored Trash.”
To claim that The Blood Brothers have received good press is a massive
understatement. For “Burn Piano Island, Burn,” the press on both sides
of the Atlantic was exceedingly lavish with praise. From the
Washington Post (“an entirely new standard of avant noise that makes
ashes out of the old punk formulas”) to the London Times (“a sound as
imaginative as it is extreme – 4 Stars.”), from Billboard (“precisely
what rock’n’roll used to be about.”), to Kerrang! (“Art plus Integrity
plus Punk Rock equals the Blood Brothers”), from Paper (“The Blood
Brothers have mastered the art of avant punk”), to the skateboard mag
Slap (“unique, explosive, and smart hardcore”) to Seattle’s Stranger (“a
sickeningly amazing record”), The Blood Brothers stacked up quite a pile
of over-the-top press.
“We’re really excited about this new album,” said Whitney. “It’s the
most honest music we’ve ever recorded.”
