New York, NY (July 9, 2015) – Chicano Batman brings their Latin-psych-slow-jam soul back on the road this weekend when they hit RUIDO fest in Chicago on Saturday to begin a six-week run of dates through the summer. The Chicago Reader affirms, “Chicano Batman honor regional antecedents of Chicano soul (aka low-rider music) like Thee Midnighters, Little Ray, and Sunny & the Sunliners by nailing organ-drenched 60s grooves with a mix of kitschy adoration and authentic detail.”
The LA quartet are still riding a wave of momentum since their set at Coachella, which was highlighted by everyone from Rolling Stone, LA Times and Paste to LA Weekly and LAist. Noisey spoke to Bardo Martinez (Lead Vocals, Keyboards, Guitar) about the experience and you can read the feature HERE.
Chicano Batman just finished a month of dates that once again had them gaining more fans and continued accolades from the press. Under The Radar reviewed their NYC show claiming, “There are exactly zero prevailing trends you could tie them to and it’s a huge part of their charm. Through Brooklyn Bowl’s state-of-the-art sound system they sounded completely golden… keep an eye out for these guys.”
The Village Voice states, “There’s more than a little trippy Tropicália in the cool crusaders’ cozy yet structurally akimbo jams, which reassemble Mexican balladry filtered through early Pink Floyd.” Philadelphia City Paper attests, “Their psyche-de-lic new album Cycles of Existential Rhyme is the best slow-jam soul of 2015.” The band will be opening a run of dates for Alabama Shakes leading to their LA homecoming at the El Rey Theatre on August 28 and a full list of tour dates can be found below.
Chicano Batman released Cycles of Existential Rhyme last year on their own El Relleno Records and NPR Musics Alt Latino included the sophomore full-length in their “Best of 2014” list. Ethnomusicologists in their own right, Chicano Batman are students of rhythm, globe trotting on a quest to reclaim and represent the musical roots of their past generations. In homage to their favorite Latin American soul groups of the 70s, the quartet uniforms their act in retro ruffled-tuxedo shirts from a thrift store near you.
Chicano Batman is more than a musical entity but an adventurous and opinionated group, who feeds off of community, afro-centricity and bolillos, on a mission to bring the overlooked to the forefront.
