ERNIE HALTER ADDS BORDERS PERFORMANCES TO TOUR SCHEDULE

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Ernie Halter, currently in the midst of a several-month-long tour with Tyrone Wells, has added some Borders performances to his schedule (see full schedule below). Halter is touring in support of his first full studio album, Congress Hotel, which was released on February 6, 2007 on the Rock Ridge Music label. The album is available now at Borders (www.bordersstores.com).

Says Rock Ridge principal Jason Spiewak: “"Borders is a great retail partner for Ernie Halter - an artist who can really deliver in an acoustic setting."

It was Halter’s very tech-savvy approach to promoting and marketing his music that garnered the attention of Rock Ridge: Halter webcasts all of his shows and has over 73,000 friends on MySpace – all accomplished in a very grassroots and organic manner. Utilizing his tech know-how, and his extraordinarily focused work ethic, Halter has taken his MySpace page – which now serves as his official website – and has incorporated such unique features as a live “tour van cam” and nightly webcasts of his concerts across the US. Congress Hotel is quite different from Halter’s previous DIY record, Lo-Fidelity, which was a self-made, two-track endeavor. Congress Hotel, a full-blown studio recording with a number of guest musicians, can in no way be described as lo-fi: the album was produced by Barrie Maguire and David Kalish (who manned the boards for kindred spirit Amos Lee).

Said AllMusic.com of Halter and Congress Hotel: “…his voice [is] an extraordinary instrument... Here the Southern Californian works with a full complement of musicians that expose the range of his smooth, soulful singing. … Halter draws from the best of the classic R&B generation (Stevie Wonder is an especially prominent influence, his phrasing apparent in several of Halter's songs), but there's an equally significant nod to the classic rock of Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and Billy Joel in the pop-ish arrangements.”

Northern State Return To Their Roots With Aptly Titled 3rd LP
“Can I Keep This Pen?” Out On Ipecac Records This August
May 4th “Crashin’ In” Vinyl Party at Galapagos Featuring First Single
“Away Away/Better Already” Out On Kanine Records May 22
LP Produced by Adrock (Beastie Boys) and Chuck Brody (Shitake Monkey)

SPIN MIX April 07 – “AWAY AWAY” - “Singsonging more than rapping over a nifty alt-rock guitar
figure, the trio of ladies are evolving, evoking early Lucious Jackson at their most guileless”

We are Northern State. We are pleased to announce that our new album “Can I Keep This Pen?” will be
released on Ipecac Recordings this August ‘07.

We’ve been friends for a very long time. Our names are Sprout, Hesta Prynn and Spero. We grew up together in
deep suburban Long Island and found ourselves living in NYC after college. One night at a party at Hesta Prynn’s
apartment we had the idea to start a rap group. So we did.

We have now been a band for 7 years. “Can I Keep This Pen?” is our third proper album, following “All City”
(Columbia Records, 2004), “Dying in Stereo” (Northern State Records/Startime/Wichita UK, 2003), and our 2002
independent EP “Hip Hop You Haven’t Heard”, which was supposed to be our demo. We have had the good fortune
of sharing the stage in the US and Europe with acts like the Roots, Le Tigre, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, The
Gossip, Gym Class Heroes, Tegan and Sara, and Cake.

After “All City”, we became increasingly frustrated with the Columbia machine and left the label. Finally free, we
teamed up with producer Chuck Brody of Shitake Monkey (Wu Tang Clan, Yoko Ono etc.) and Adrock from the
Beastie Boys and began making our new album. We wrote some rock songs and some hip hop songs and some
other kinds of songs. We pushed the limits more than ever in terms of what a hip hop song might sound like,
what a rock song might sound like, and what Northern State might sound like. We finally named the album
“Can I Keep This Pen?”

“Can I Keep This Pen?” includes songs about our friendship (“Better Already”), our president (“Cowboy Man”),
the apathy that surrounds us (“Cold War”), as well as what may be the first Northern State love song (“Away,
Away”). Our classic old school hip hop sound runs through the album, weaving its way through an electro-rock
current. We did an unprecedented amount of singing, there are more guitars than ever, as well as several
references to horses.

We were fortunate to have some talented friends like Mr. Murray Hill, Kaki King, and Katie Cassidy stop by
and play on the album. However, we are no longer allowed to hold “writing meetings” at the Rodeo bar.

Mike Patton and Greg at Ipecac heard the new record and loved it and we are thrilled to finally be working
with a label that encourages us to be as weird as we are.

Oh, I’m sorry..Can I Keep This Pen?

PROJECT 86
Readies Rival Factions For Release 6/19
Headlining The Awaken Festival on Mother's Day

Tooth & Nail recording artists PROJECT 86 are putting the finishing touches on their sixth album Rival Factions, slated for release on June 19, 2007. Produced by Ulrich Wild (Bleeding Through, Deftones) and Project 86, the band is wrapping up mastering at Los Angeles’ The Bomb Shelter (home of The Henry Rollins Show) and gearing up for a hefty touring schedule. But first off, they will headline the 2007 Awaken Humanity Festival on May 13th (Mother's Day) in Los Angeles to benefit critical assistance programs for women and children.

The Awaken Humanity organization supports a wide range of programs, both local and abroad, ranging from helping at-risk Los Angeles youth in their efforts to graduate from high school to developing a “children’s village” in Zambia, Africa for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. The Festival kicks off at 4:00pm on Sunday, May 13th in downtown LA at the Mayan Theater (1038 S. Hill St, Los Angeles, CA). Project 86 will be headlining the festival along with a diverse group of artists including Christafari, Stranger, Northern, Until June, Odd Thomas, Buddy, Avner, Kari Kimmel, Spur58 and more who will perform on five stages.

"For the first time in the history of the band, we have the opportunity to align ourselves with a cause like The Awaken Humanity Festival," says vocalist Andrew Schwab. "We completely support Awaken and their desire to provide relief in areas where it is needed most. This is an effort that anyone with a heart can make a true impact on the downcast, broken, and meek. We are proud to be a part of this."

A stylistic and artistic departure from what most will expect from the band, Rival Factions is a major jump forward for Project 86. More textured and focused than their previous album, their sixth album witnesses the band at a crossroads with the heavier rock sound that their fans had come to expect and the artistic direction that they as a band want to explore. "We didn't have a preconceived idea of what this record was supposed to be, other than a record we would enjoy listening to ourselves," explains Andrew. "Our evolution into what we are now has only been fully realized on this album. The goal was to make bored housewives hum our jams while they are baking cookies," he laughs.

From the Cure-ish swirl of "Old Wave" to the minor key stomp of "Death Before Dishonor" to the punk brashness of "Light 'Em Up", Rival Factions is an album that moves Project 86 out of the metal category and into mainstream rock. "This is the first album that we highlighted the keyboards," he says. "Other than that, we haven't really evolved at all. We were always on the fringes of the different styles of rock. That afforded us the ability to evolve naturally into what we are. We have always existed in this space that doesn't sit with a particular genre or group, which wasn't necessarily intentional, but has been a blessing nonetheless."

Project 86 will also be hitting the road throughout the Summer and Fall, supporting the release of Rival Factions on June 19th (dates to be announced shortly). But first and foremost, the band wants to make sure the album is perfect and ready for the public to hear... and swoon. "We just hope people like the songs, even if they don't know Project 86 is playing them. Isn't that the whole point anyway?"

THE NEXT WAVE OF MUSICIAN TO FAN TECHNOLOGY HAS ARRIVED:

BROADTEXTER.COM EMPOWERS MUSICIANS WITH A FREE MOBILE FAN CLUB SERVICE TO CUT ABOVE WEB NOISE

Broadtexter (http://www.broadtexter.com) enables North America-based musicians to create free Mobile Fan Clubs which easily allow them to use regionalized text messaging to stay connected with fans. Each tech savvy band or solo musician has an email list and MySpace 'friends', but reaching fans with text messages about new releases or specific shows cuts above the web noise, providing users with the next generation of direct fan communication. Artists including The Cinematics (TVT), TRAPT (Warner Brothers), The Weepies (Nettwerk), Constantine Maroulis (American Idol), Melissa Ferrick (Right On Records), The Nadas (indie), and Reel Big Fish (indie) have already adopted Broadtexter as their mobile solution.

How it Works:
Fans easily join a Mobile Fan Club right from a Flash widget that the musician
can embed across their entire web presence (social networking sites, blogs, and home pages). Once in a Mobile Fan Club, the musician (not Broadtexter) controls the messages that go out to the fans. Broadtexter is free of spam so fans will never get annoyed with third-party text ads on their phones.

Cool Factor:
One stand-out feature is that a musician can send regionalized alerts to their
fans right from their own cell phone (because sometimes you just can't get to a computer
between gigs). Regionalized and scheduled alerts can also be easily sent from the secure
Broadtexter account where fan subscriber data can be reviewed, the Broadtexter widget can be customized and past and pending text alerts can be displayed and/or edited.

The Trend:
Broadtexter is offering a meaningful way for fans to stay informed when they're not
at their computers. The growth of social networking sites like MySpace has created great
opportunities to increase exposure for musicians, but it has also created an overload of
information for the typical music fan. It's tied fans to computer screens and created a
challenge to keep their attention. Broadtexter Mobile Fan Clubs make it easy for musicians to stay connected with their fans and update them with relevant information.

Scenarios:
The usefulness and power of Broadtexter for musicians becomes obvious when you
consider it can be used for so many things like show time changes, special radio appearance announcements, and exclusive fan club discounts. However, the greatest power is being able to reach a fan a few hours before a show with a reminder on their cell phone. It's such an incredible way to get more 'butts in the seats'!

Founders:
Based in New York City, Broadtexter was created by a group of real performing
musicians and music fans who wanted to create a way to help musicians connect with their fans through the use of cell phones and text messaging. In tune with the changing climate and democratization of empowering services available to musicians, the founders recognized that mobile solutions have only been available to the major artists with the big bucks. Broadtexter is built for ALL musicians of every size fan base.

It's a brave new world…the better musicians communicate with their fans, the more their fans will grow with them and buy their albums and come to their shows. Broadtexter currently serves the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico and has many great plans for new features to further empower artists with a deeper mobile platform. Setting up a Mobile Fan Club can be done in five minutes right from the Broadtexter website.

Bottom of the Hudson returns July 17th with Fantastic Hawk!

Absolutely Kosher Records is pleased to announce the newest LP, Fantastic Hawk, from Philadelphia-based Bottom of the Hudson. The album will be released on July 17th. The power pop band, led by chief songsmith and new father Eli Simon, its most anthemic and complete work to date (and also its first as a multi-person band to date) with more aggressive arrangements, clearer production, and airtight songwriting without sacrificing the mid-fi charm for which the band is known.

From the dregs of a mid 90's indie rock scene that hollowed out the heads of many, then quietly passed away, the four- tracks of the world would still burn bedrooms to cinders. Northeaster ex-pat Eli Simon settled horse and carriage in Charlottesville, VA in 1998 to document the life and times of the young derelict fabulous. A portion of those recordings would later be released as The Omaha Record (Absolutely Kosher Records) and SongsfromtheBarrel Commando (Happy Home Records). The songs were dirty filthy, pop-crude with unknowable lyrical depth, fountains of guitar, organ, and vocal tracks. Well-regarded if slightly misunderstood, Simon ventured out of his warehouse to seek out collaborators.

By 2003, after various lineup changes, Bottom of the Hudson was joined by a barely 20-year-old drummer Chris Coello (who had released electronica records under the names Air Mail, and YOU). Soon after, Simon and Coello relocated the project to Philadelphia, PA, where they would adopt bass player Trevor Butler,of Coyote (Birdman Records). Having released the acclaimed six-song rocker Holiday Machine by Absolutely Kosher Records, as well as a Split 12" w/ Coyote, by Hot Dog City Records, the band has firmed up its line-up (now with guitar player Michael Prince rounding out the group) and headed into the studio. With two full-length releases and two EP’s under their belt, it’s shocking that the forthcoming Fantastic Hawk is the band’s first proper album.

The Bottom of the Hudson sound spans the distance from old indie sludge such as Seesaw, Luxurious Bags, and Sebadoh to the sonic heights of the timeless song giants Robyn Hitchcock, Richard Davies, and Jeff Mangum, all under the gloss of a little-mined vein of 1980’s production / arrangement style a la the Church (when they were brilliant), early My Bloody Valentine and the aforementioned Hitchcock’s work with the Egyptians. All that said, Bottom of the Hudson is no nostalgia act. 120 Minutes has made way for The Daily Show, the bong has been replaced by a baby carriage (Simon’s wife gave birth just months after the album’s completion) and Simon’s lyrics are as timeless as ever.

Previous press for BOTH:

“Tracing over the lines of classic slacker bands is an easy way to sound unaffected, yet I don't hear any ulterior motives in their nostalgia, just simple, self-assured songs from a band that never grew out of the 90s. Put it this way: Talent isn't flashing how much better you do something, it's making what you do better look easy. Simon easily earns the title, Bedroom Bowie."
--Jason Crock, Pitchfork Media

"Wailing guitars drunk on feedback slash through 'Holiday Machine', a sprawling triumph from BOTTOM OF THE HUDSON. Just don't expect this song to remember your name in the morning."
-- Ryan Dombal, Entertainment Weekly

Koßn GUITARIST JAMES “MUNKY” SHAFFER AND HIS EMOTIONAL SYPHON RECORDINGS ANNOUNCE THEIR FIRST RELEASE; MONSTER IN THE MACHINE’S ‘BUTTERFLY PINNED’ DUE OUT JULY 10 AT ONLINE OUTLETS AND AUGUST 21 AT RETAIL OUTLETS

Monster In The Machine’s BUTTERFLY PINNED is more than just music--it’s an active aural experience.
The debut album by the California band--Shannon Crawford (vocals/keyboards/guitars), Doug Ardito (bass) and Josh Freese (drums)--is due out July 10 (online) and August 21 (retail). It’s one of two releases on Emotional Syphon Recordings (ADA Distribution), the independent label owned by Koßn guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer.

Artistic freedom remains paramount to Emotional Syphon Recordings. “When Koßn was on Sony,” explains Shaffer, “we were so lucky the label never came in and said we couldn’t say things on our records. We were able to have 100 percent creative freedom. One of my main goals is to maintain that. I’m never going to tell artists on my label what they can and can’t say. I want them to push the envelope.”

Shannon Crawford—the mastermind behind Monster In The Machine—does just that with BUTTERFLY PINNED. He’s crafted a record that entrances the listener with swirling acoustic melodies and haunting, hypnotic electronics. From the infectiously incendiary chorus of “Under Your Shadow” to the sonic dreamscape of “Helicopter,” the music remains memorable. Pristine melodies soar over brooding beats, and tracks like “Savior” convey a message of disenchantment and call for change. Underneath the beauty of the music lies an honest mirror reflecting social ills. Yet, hope for a solution exists. Issues faced include the death of our environment, religion’s contradictions and the perilous existence of an artist under the thumb of a corporation. These are some of the darker themes that Crawford delves into on BUTTERFLY PINNED.

The album is not Crawford’s first foray into the recording world. In 1997, his band Cellophane was signed to Virgin Records. “Cellophane had a good record that fell through the cracks,” Crawford says. “For a long time it was really heartbreaking to have had that and lose it. I was 23-years-old, and I couldn’t deal with personalities of the music business. I quit, because no one at the label was doing anything anyway. They just put us out on the road, and that was it.”

Disillusioned with the music industry, Crawford pursued another passion, painting. His work has been acquired by celebrities from Lindsay Lohan to author Jerry Stahl. He also created the cover for Norma Jean’s highly successful REDEEMER album. In the midst of painting, he never lost sight of his musical ambitions.

Then inspiration struck in 2006. “A lot of it has to do with maturity. Being a full-time single father to my daughter helped me.” He continues, “Last year, I just began writing all of these really good songs because I wasn’t trying to push it or force it. I just let it go and all of these great things came to me and through me.”

Once finished, Crawford played the demos for longtime friend Shaffer. “James has been my biggest cheerleader for years. He’d been on the fence about starting a label, and when I played him my first songs, he said, ‘That’s it. I’m starting it.’”

Shaffer loved the music so much that he lent his guitar talents to the tense album closer “Don’t.” Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle) stepped in to handle drum duties for the entire record while Imani Coppola plays violin on “Shut the Door.” The recording line-up was then rounded out by ex-Cellophane/current Puddle of Mudd bassist Doug Arditio. Crawford produced the album himself and it was mixed and recorded at Henson Studios (formerly A&M Studios) in Los Angeles, CA.

Ultimately, the album traverses an entire emotional spectrum. “The major label mindset is that you don’t want to be too diverse, and you don’t want to confuse people. I think the public is smart enough to handle a diverse record. BUTTERFLY PINNED is eclectic and honest, but at the same time, it’s ethereal. It takes you to another dimension. Art is an escape, and people want to escape.”

The title of the record sums up the concept perfectly. “It’s about the death for vanity, and the butterfly pinned is a perfect example of that because it’s usually overlooked. For example, we are killing everyday for our vanity by the cars we drive,” exclaims Crawford. “I’ve got to practice what I preach by driving a Prius and a vegetable oil car, and I’m trying. People just need to try.”

Next up for Emotional Syphon Recordings will be the debut album by Droid, which is also due out July 10 (online) and August 21 (retail). Droid combines the bludgeoning precision of bands like Lamb of God and Meshuggah with a down and dirty hardcore vocal delivery. Their songs slay with a calculated groove and violent, percussive riffs. Deftones frontman Chino Moreno guests on one of the forthcoming debut’s standout tracks, “Vengeance is Mine.”

Shaffer is excited about the prospect of releasing albums by two very different bands on Emotional Syphon Recordings. As he explains, “I wanted to establish right away that it’s going to be a diverse record label and get both spectrums of the rock world. In a couple of years, I’d like to have 10 really strong bands. My main goal is to just get them on the road and making a living at playing music. If one of the records is a hit record, great, but I’m still going to keep everything on the independent level—a small company with a small staff. That’s the vision I have for it.” That vision separates Emotional Syphon Recordings from so many other labels that remain focused on statistics rather than quality art.

Having an artist front the label allows for serious exploration and boundary pushing. Shaffer aims to help young bands create what comes naturally. “I’ve been very lucky to make music and to make a living at it. It’s been a gift for me. There are so many people who are talented, and I want to help some other people make a living at what they love to do. It’s kind of my way to repay what I’ve been given.”

Emotional Syphon Recordings is completely a passion project, with Shaffer hoping to eventually release his own music as well as music videos and DVDs.

How Can Hip-Hop Be Dead if Wu-Tang is Forever?
Wu-Tang Clan's first album in 6 years to be released in Europe on Bodog Music

Bodog Music is proud to announce the European signing of legendary hip-hop crew Wu-Tang Clan. Bodog Music will release The 8 Diagrams, Wu-Tang's first studio album in 6 years, in Germany on September 7, with a separate release in the UK and the rest of Europe on September 10.

The album contains new tracks by the eight remaining original members, as well as unreleased vocals by the late Ol' Dirty Bastard, which were recorded during sessions for the group's first album. There will also be a tribute song to ODB called "Life Changes."

"This is really what Bodog Music is all about: Hip-hop at its highest," says Bodog founder Calvin Ayre, who along with Wu-Tang's international representative Eva Ries, has closed a deal that will advertise the Wu-Tang brand and turn Bodog Music into an ambitious hip-hop label. "With the Wu-Tang Clan being the widely respected and revered group that they are, and Bodog's international music distribution expertise, the potential of this relationship in unlimited. Wu-Tang Clan still ain't nothing to f#@k with."

Ayre's sentiments are echoed by Wu-Tang producer RZA who says, "The RZA himself has called upon his Wu-Tang brothers to reunite and show the real unity and raw force of hip-hop. How can hip-hop be dead if Wu-Tang is Forever?"

Bodog Music's marketing competence will be a big lift to Wu-Tang in Europe, as the record label signed the group exclusively for European releases, with distribution via Pinnacle in the UK and EDEL for the rest of the continent.

After a two year hiatus, the hip-hop collective will be touring Europe this summer, including two UK shows at the Hammersmith Apollo on July 5 and the Manchester Apollo on July 6. Appearing live will be original Wu-Tang members, Ghostface Killah, RZA, GZA, Raekwon, Method Man, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa, U-God and Cappadona. This summer the crew hits the road in the U.S. with Rage Against The Machine and Public Enemy.

Debuting in 1993, the Staten Island, NY-based Wu-Tang Clan is one of the most revolutionary hip-hop acts of all time. Throwing out the pre-established formulas for breaking a rap group, Wu-Tang methodically released each album while cultivating the solo careers of all nine MCs.

After its breakthrough album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), the Clan reconvened in 1997 for the much-anticipated double-album Wu-Tang Forever, which simultaneously shot straight to #1 in the US and UK charts. In 2000, the group released The W, which included the hit single Gravel Pit and most recently, Iron Flag in 2001
