Orlando indies Berman release third album
Berman releases "Send Me to the End" by Courtney Sutton
Not many bands are able to produce multiple albums without the help of a record label, and even fewer can keep their musical integrity in the process. Then again, Berman just makes it look easy.
The melodic yet hard-rock act will officially release its third album, Send Me to the End, on April 14, Good Friday at Backbooth in downtown Orlando. The CD is anticipated to be their best work.
"It's a very diverse album," said lead guitarist Bradd Shapiro. "I felt that the songs just absolutely had to be written. They came out exactly how we had hoped."
The CD is not a departure from the previous two albums, but rather the climax of five years of relentless dedication. The music intuitively strikes a near-impossible balance between quality musicianship and live feel.
"We got a really good idea for how it felt to play the songs for fans ahead of time and we were able to capture that in recording," Bradd Shapiro said.
Bassist Greg Hejja believes that Send Me to the End will "surpass people's expectations" of what they thought Berman was capable of creating. Drummer Steve Shapiro agrees.
"Anything is possible," Steve Shapiro said. "I just hope that people will like the music as much as we do, and see all our work paid off."
And they have worked hard. Based out of a home studio in Orlando, the five members write, record, book shows, promote and perform all on their own. What makes them even more remarkable is that all the members either work and/or attend college full time, all while carving out their own niche in the rock music scene.
Since the release of their previous album, Life in the Stars, Berman's fan base has expanded domestically and internationally largely due to the rising popularity of pod-casting, or downloadable online radio programs. Pod-casting is a tremendous vehicle for independent artists like Berman who don't necessarily fit in with transitory fads.
"There are no politics [in pod-casting]," Steve Shapiro said. "It's just people who like music and want to share it with each other."
"We didn't have a single agenda when we made this album," Bradd Shapiro said. "We didn't write these songs to appeal to record labels…We are creating our music for music enthusiasts."
Berman fans can rest assured that the band is not behind the curve of distinction. On the contrary, they are merely waiting for the music industry to catch up.

Dirty On Purpose Debut LP "Hallelujah Sirens” Out On North Street Records New Release Date June 27th/ Currently Featured on 4 Episodes of MTV’s Laguna Beach
PITCHFORK MEDIA - “ squeaky-clean and tight twee-pop outfit that betrays traces of Yo La Tengo, Sigur Rós, and Belle & Sebastian while managing to keep a cheeky, wide-eyed tone of its own...And considering the buzz they've already generated throughout the big bad city, these five tracks had better be a melodically delightful sampling of those to come."
After the buzz of their Sleep Late For a Better Tomorrow EP, Dirty on Purpose will now release their much-anticipated debut full length, Hallelujah Sirens, on North Street Records on June 27th. They are currently featured on the MTV.com Laguna Beach website next to Better Than Ezra (at the bottom of the page) Link: http://www.mtv.com/onair/laguna_beach/season2/main.jhtml. (Episode and song titles listed below)
Often described as ethereal and emotional space-rock, Dirty on Purpose, a four-piece from Brooklyn, NY, beautifully combine sonic washes of noise with delicate, pretty harmonies. Hallelujah Sirens features 10 brand new, rich and diverse songs that span from upbeat tracks like “No Radio” and “Monument” to songs that build up slowly and explode with intensity like “Always Looking” and “Fake Lakes.”
With four songwriters and three main vocalists contributing to the group’s overall sound, Dirty on Purpose create music that is wholly original, while paying tribute to their shoegazer, noise and pop influences. Though the journey has been slow and steady, the reward has been tremendous – reaching and realizing their very own musical landscape. Doug Marvin, Joseph Jurewicz, George Wilson and DJ Boudreau are the conductors of their own orchestra, and Hallelujah Sirens is their latest opus.
Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Jaymay contributed female vocals to a number of tracks on Hallelujah Sirens, including “Light Pollution,” “Kill Our City,” and “Marfa Lights.” Her beautiful harmonies enrich the songs with finesse and charm.
For songs like “No Radio,” the band also pulled in a horns section complete with a trombone, saxophone and trumpet to give the robust track that extra added bit of excitement. Other tracks like “Lake Effect” and “Your Summer Dress” called for a strings section of viola and cello. Anne Brewster, formerly of Sea Ray, contributed on cello.
The band will set out on a national tour in Summer 2006 to support their new album. This is a band that has steadily built up a following around the world, giving them time to develop and expand as musicians and gel as a band. They aim to keep their career long and prolific. Keep an eye out for them, and see them grow and mature, carving out their own little niche in musical history.
Doug Marvin – drums, vocals Joseph Jurewicz – guitar, vocals George Wilson – guitar, vocals DJ Boudreau – bass

Mavericks guitarist Nick Kane releases CD with new band The Balls
Long-time Mavericks guitar slinger Nick Kane has assembled a bare-knuckled 3-piece rock'n'roll band and re-writes the book on Instrumental Rock Music.
"The Balls...Come Out Swingin'" www.ballsrock.com www.myspace.com/ballsrock nick@ballsrock.com
Nick Kane had spent several years lounging in various bands around Nashville and for most of the 90's he traveled around the world as a member of country-pop group The Mavericks, collecting a Grammy Award and selling out 8 nights at the Royal Albert Hall along the way.
But it was Nick's desire to play music that had its own voice, unencumbered from any commercial trappings, and in Nashville's cold hard heart he found the perfect place to develop this dream without distraction. He was fortunate to find two like-minded cohorts in Rick Taylor, bass guitar; and Joe Scheibelhoffer, drums; and together they have formed The Balls.
The new CD "The Balls...Come Out Swingin'" is a highly original piece of work. Their style has been described as 'garage-prog': on one hand they tackle very difficult and ambitious arrangements yet the band is driven by a raw, powerful and ferociously loud rock'n'roll spirit.
The listener will hear shades of early Deep Purple; grungy Link Wray; themes straight out of a Spaghetti Western; flat out paint-peeling Rock and even a touch of Pachelbel. And yet, it's like you're hearing it all for the first time.
The Balls are also known for their passionate live performance and their ability to take instrumental-music neophytes on a long and winding journey, riveting the audience and leaving them exhausted, elated and with mouths agape.
In the 60's you had Herb Albert, in the 70's there was Jeff Beck, today you have Nick Kane...and the Balls.
"The Balls...Come Out Swingin'" is available from ballsrock.com, CDBaby.com and Guitar9.com.

THE EARLY NOVEMBER RELEASE TRIPLE-DISC THE MECHANIC, THE MOTHER, AND THE PATH JULY 11, 2006
WOODLAND HILLS CA, April 10, 2006 — Drive-Thru Record’s recording artist THE EARLY NOVEMBER will release a triple-disc titled The Mechanic, The Mother, And The Path on July 11, 2006.
This beautifully orchestrated release is the carefully thought out endeavor of EARLY NOVEMBER front man Ace Enders and band mates Jeff Kummer (drums), Sergio Anello (bass), Joe Marro (guitar), and Bill Lugg (guitar). Produced by Chris Badami (The Starting Line, Midtown), the albums were recorded in the band’s home state of New Jersey. The Mechanic disc highlights the group’s heavier rock sound while The Mother leans towards the acoustic, mellower side. The Path is a soundtrack complete with dialogue and characters both of which intermingle amongst the first two CDs, thus tying the three discs together. The story arc involves a young man who clashes with his over bearing father. The teenage character leaves his family with the girl he loves, setting out to forge a new path, one that avoids the trappings that ensnared his conventional parents. Upon having his own child, he swears he won’t make the same mistakes his father did. The cycle of life brings him full circle as his own son begins to rebel against him, and he finds himself slowly becoming like his father, a fate he tried so hard to escape.
The triple-decker is a follow-up to 2003’s critically acclaimed album, The Room’s Too Cold. Other landmark releases from THE EARLY NOVEMBER include the plugged-in and acoustic versions of the EP For All of This. Combined, the three albums have sold over 300K copies.
THE EARLY NOVEMBER is currently on the Take Action Tour, which raises awareness and funds for youth suicide prevention. In May, the group will shoot a video for the track “Hair,” and then spend the late summer on the Warped Tour.

ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) Celebrate Fly Between Falls CD Release And Big Tour Plans
Tour dates with Dave Matthews Band in June. The CD will be in stores April 18, 2006 on Brushfire Records.
A funky blend of ‘70’s, R&B and jazz, with a whopping dollop of groove.-- Keyboard Magazine
ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) is kicking out the jams for Spring with the first single off their new album, Fly Between Falls, topping the AAA radio add lists in its first week on the charts! “Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down,” a feisty and sensuous love song featuring their labelmate and touring buddy Jack Johnson on back up vocals, is already spinning at radio stations across the country.
Meanwhile, reports are in from ALO’s month-long jaunt overseas with Jack and Matt Costa and it seems the quartet won over fans and press across Europe. They had plenty of time to shine on stage -- not only did ALO give their endlessly energetic live performances night after night, but members of the band extended their musicianship to the other artists on the tour. Keyboardist/singer Zach Gill played keys during Johnson’s set and guitarist Dan Lebowitz sat in on a few tunes, while ALO’s Steve Adams joined Costa on bass.
With no signs of slowing down, ALO are now looking towards a spring/summer on the road, including a West Coast headlining tour, East Coast dates with Dave Matthews Band, and appearances at major festivals like High Sierra, Wakarusa and the All Good Festival.
Fly Between Falls, which will be out April 18, 2006 on Brushfire Records, includes a big treat for fans of the band -– the first recording of live favorite “Walls of Jericho,” which was recently featured in Jack Johnson’s live DVD, A Weekend at the Greek. ALO’s collective musician craftsmanship and distinct California vibe shines throughout this CD of jazzy jams, dance grooves, poppy melodies, and psychedelic rock.

TOM ZE IN STORES TOMORROW- April 11th
Tom Zé "Estudando o Pagode" (Luaka Bop/V2)
Tom Zé wants to apologize for centuries of men dominating and mistreating women. His penance is "Estudando o Pagode" (V2), an album billed as an operetta. Mr. Zé is the most avant-garde of the songwriters who emerged in Brazil's rebellious tropicalia movement of the 1960's, so his operetta is hardly a straightforward narrative. "Estudando o Pagode" leaps through time, space and cultures; it's a series of arguments over love and power set to springy, sweet-and-sour pop. Since Mr. Zé has invented characters for his operetta, his flinty voice shares the debates with a gallery of women: sweetly romantic, contemptuous, furious, or screaming in what's either ecstasy or torture.
In Mr. Zé's music, serious intentions are inseparable from playfulness and his mad scientist's love of crackpot systems. One agenda is never enough for a Tom Zé song; he juggles allusions and non sequiturs, familiar Brazilian styles and his own deconstructions. "Estudando o Pagode" means "Studying the Pagode," and Mr. Zé often dips into the lilting, acoustic, usually macho Brazilian pop called pagode, which he finds both wrongheaded and seductive.
Of course, he skews it severely. He sometimes trades pagode's samba chords for dissonance, polytonality and spiky patterns, or switches to rock and hip-hop beats, or laces songs with abrasive electronics. Now and then, he uses the nasal sound of ficus leaves rolled up and played like reed instruments. He's both analytical, distilling songs down to essential parts, and whimsical in his fondness for funny noises.

UMPHREY'S MCGEE'S NEW STUDIO RELEASE, SAFETY IN NUMBERS, IN STORES NOW.
LOOK FOR THEM ON ABC'S JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE (May 18), AT BONNAROO (June 16-18), ON TOUR WITH DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, AND HEADLINING DATES COAST TO COAST.
Safety In Numbers, which just hit stores on April 4, 2006, is the third studio album by the musically muscular and relentlessly inventive Umphrey's McGee. For this highly anticipated release, personal chaos provided plenty of fuel for an explosion of collaborative, creative energy. From top to bottom, in its carefully constructed yet deeply felt notes, Safety In Numbers is strong and coolly calculated, yet easy-going and improvisational -- an aural representation of life's balancing act. Without sacrificing their endearing playfulness, Umphrey's McGee - dare we say it - is growing up.
The album's eleven original songs offer intriguing insight into these rising stars. For Safety In Numbers, the band's complex and often spectacular musicianship move from the surface of their craft, and rest instead just under the skin of the music. From top to bottom, in its carefully constructed yet deeply felt notes, Safety In Numbers is a strong and decisive, yet easy-flowing representation of Umphrey's McGee and a tribute to a friend's life in the face of a recent loss-a sonic companion to life's balancing act.
The album features guest performances by saxophone sensation Joshua Redman and veteran rocker, Huey Lewis. Album artwork is by famed album designer Storm Thorgerson.
In support of the new release, Umphrey's McGee is on tour this spring and summer. Just back from their first European tour, Umphrey's now hits the U.S., including a Midwest run of dates opening for the Dave Matthews Band and a Bonnaroo Music Festival performance for the fourth year in a row. But first, look for Umphrey's McGee at headlining shows coast to coast.

It's been a quick rise for Chicago's Umphrey's McGee. Their virtuoso playing and edgy songcraft recently compelled RollingStone to choose Umphrey's "a band to watch" in their annual Hot Issue. Relix magazine put them on the cover of their December 2004 issue and the prestigious Chicago Music Awards bestowed Umphrey's McGee with the coveted Best Rock Entertainer of the Year award. Booked coast to coast by the Monterey Peninsula Booking Agency, the band recently sold out two nights at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom, two nights at Irving Plaza, San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium, the list goes on.

JEREMY ENIGK'S SOLO ALBUM NEARING COMPLETION LOLLAPALOOZA APPEARANCE CONFIRMED, SUMMER TOUR BEING FINALIZED
LOS ANGELES, CA - Monday, April 10, 2006 -- JEREMY ENIGK, the enigmatic singer for Sunny Day Real Estate and The Fire Theft, is putting the final touches on his highly-anticipated second solo effort, the follow up to 1996's "Return of the Frog Queen." The as yet untitled new album will be released this summer on Enigk's own imprint, Lewis Hollow Records, which will be distributed by Reincarnate Records through SONY BMG.
"We're just about done tracking, and then it needs to be mixed and mastered," said Enigk. "It's just little things here and there, like editing."
The recording process has been an interesting one. With technology, the album was recorded all around the country in several home studios. Working closely with Josh Myers, who co-produced the album, Enigk says, "It's cool that it's being recorded mainly in my house and Josh's house. And everybody - like Joe Skyward, he did the bass at his house in L.A., and Briggs Moran did stuff at his house [with] Pro-Tools, everybody has their own home system now."
Fans will be happy to note Enigk's lyrical inspirations have remained true to form. Though the album still employs orchestral moments like "ROTFQ," "It's not nearly as big, but it does reach big places," says Enigk. "My style of writing, the soul-searching-type lyrics, the acoustic quality [is similar] to 'Frog Queen.'"
Enigk's favorite track, "River to Sea," was inspired by John Lennon. "It's just a really pretty, straight-forward song," he says. "I have the tendency to get super dark or try to get too creative, and this one's just straight-forward and lovely. The song to me is about forgiveness and the importance of that. I've never really sung about that and it's probably my favorite right now."
Another gem is "World Waits," which, according to Enigk, has "a strange melody, but it's another really pretty one.
"[The melody] sort of falls. I start up really high, and then just let it drop and drop and drop and drop - and it just goes for a long time. I run out of breath by the time I'm at the bottom of the melody. It's not your standard melody skiff."
A few of the new tracks were originally written as early as the mid-'90s. "Damian Dreams" cane from that era. "It's insane," describes Enigk. "The drums are really heavy and the drums are sort of the hook on this song to me; it's not about guitar, it's not about bass. It's all about these drums that just suddenly kick your ass. And it gets really angry. I'm not an angry person, but vocally I just scream and at one point just sound like a f**king lion or something."
Perhaps the most surprising track is "City Tonight." "It's definitely the poppiest song I've ever written, and there's a lot of keys in there, you know that snythy sort of '80s sound," Enigk says. Thought it's not his style, "I've always wanted to make a pop song, I've been trying to do it for years, this is probably the closest I've come to it."
Rest assured, Enigk will not be hitting the pop circuit anytime soon. "I'm too quirky...I'm not that good of a musician to write my vision. The songs write themselves, and those are always the best songs - the ones that I really have very little control over."
Enigk is slated to perform August 4 on the Jack Stage at Lollapalooza in Chicago. He will embark on a European tour in July, followed by a four-week North American club tour which will stop in major cities including New York, Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Dallas and San Francisco, to name just a few. The complete itinerary will be announced shortly.
On the tour dates, Enigk plans to play all of "Frog Queen" and "I'd like to try and do some covers, maybe mix it up a little bit. Of course I'll play the new record, and if I have anything new by then that I'm writing now, I'll probably play it."
The touring band - all of whom contributed to the new album - will comprise Myers on keyboard, Kannan Tupper on drums, Nick Macri on bass, and Greg Saran on guitar.
The highly-touted Seattle-based band Sunny Day Real Estate, regarded as "the band at the core of emo-core," earned critical and commercial success while signed to the Sub-Pop label in the mid-90s. During their brief existence, Sunny Day Real Estate released only five albums but created quite an enigmatic legend with their personal and professional twists and turns. In 1995, SDRE's rhythm section - William Goldsmith and Nate Mendel - joined up with Dave Grohl to form Foo Fighters, and in 1996, Enigk recorded his first solo album, the exquisitely beautiful "Return of the Frog Queen." In 2003, Enigk re-teamed with Goldsmith and Mendel to form the Fire Theft and recorded a self-titled album. White the Fire Theft project is currently on hold so Enigk can concentrate on his solo album, the trio still considers themselves a band.

Miranda Sound "Western Reserve" is the third full-length for Columbus, Ohio four-piece Miranda Sound. The Denver Post has already said of "Western Reserve": "[it] finds Miranda Sound fulfilling its considerable potential amid the white noise of so many other post-punk poseurs." Miranda Sound enlisted the talents of producer J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines) with engineering help from Neal Schmitt and Jon Chinn (The Sun, New Bomb Turks). Robbins' influence both as a producer and musician can he heard on such standout tracks as opener "Jackson Milton," "The Lull of Youngstown" and "Control," but the band retains its own clear sound throughout the dozen tracks. In all, "Western Reserve" is as honest and real as it gets. It's a true, thoughtful, yet accessible record with dark and memorable riffs, appealing melodies, and lyrics that accurately but obliquely reflect what it's like to realize that you're an adult.

So here it is, the second album from The Futureheads. 6 years since forming, 12 record releases, 5 UK tours, 4 US tours, 3 top 20 singles and 250,000 debut albums sold worldwide, where did it all begin?
After meeting at the Sunderland City Detatched Youth Project, a lottery funded music scheme for getting kids off the street, Barry, Ross, Jaff and Pete (the then drummer) played their first gig at Ashbrooke Cricket Club in 2000. The departure of Pete (Brewis, now a member of Field Music) led to the conscription of Barry’s younger brother Dave. He boldly tried his hand at drumming and now, 6 years on, can cite Dave Grohl as one of his admirers. It doesn’t get much better than that.
2004-5 proved to be an explosive, character-building year for The Futureheads. After supporting Franz Ferdinand in the States (Sept '04) they went on to tour America twice in early '05 before playing the main stage at last years Coachella festival. Their single, "Hounds of Love" went Top 10 in the UK, earning the title "Track of the Year 2005" by NME and "#5 Single of 2005" on Pitchfork.
The new record, News and Tributes (Vagrant/StarTime International), is the by-product of six weeks locked in a Scarborough studio with producer Ben Hillier (Depeche Mode, Doves, Blur). The first single to be taken from News and Tributes is “Skip To The End”. As with much of the LP, it’s brash, bold, and extremely catchy. Their use of four part harmonies has been expanded upon throughout the album, with lead vocals once again shared by Barry and Ross. The pace has slowed and the songwriting matured but the unique sounds and edgy-ness displayed on their debut are still paramount. “Our first album was made by giddy teenage boys but this one has been made by big strong men," says Barry.
The big strong men of The Futureheads are taking to the the road to air the new material in the live setting in which they so proudly flourish. In support of the June 13th release, the band will be playing select US dates throughout the summer, including the prestigious Pitchfork Festival in Chicago this July.

The Riverboat Gamblers Announce Tour Dates; To The Confusion of Our Enemies In Stores April 25th; Band Cited As One Of "Five Bands That Broke Through At SXSW" In New Rolling Stone
Riverboat Gamblers have announced a string of dates around the release of their new CD "To The Confusion of Our Enemies" in stores on April 25 on Volcom Entertainment.
Check out what David Fricke of Rolling Stone has to say about Riverboat Gamblers in the next issue of Rollling Stone ("Five Bands That Broke Through At The SXSW Festival"):
"The best band without a major label record deal at SXSW...The Gamblers guarantee punk rock catharsis. Ripping through fourteen songs in half an hour, they baptized pogoers and badge-holders alike in sweat and yell-along choruses as (singer Mike Weibe) a beanpole Iggy Pop, literally bounced off walls, crawled atop the audience as far as his mike chord allowed and hung by his ankles from the rafter as he sang. The band's new album To The Confusion of Our Enemies will be out April 25th to the delight of everyone else."

DAVE MELILLO'S TALK IS CHEAP AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY ON mtvU.COM VIDEO TO HIT AIR WAVES AND CYBERSPACE WOODLAND HILLS CA, April 3, 2006 — Drive-Thru Record’s artist Dave Melillo will release his debut Talk Is Cheap on April 17th 2006 as an exclusive download available on mtvU.com.
Melillo recorded the Talk Is Cheap EP with James Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever, New Found Glory) in Orlando FL. Melillo, who has been writing music since he was ten years old, penned the six songs on the EP. The tracks vary, from the touching sentiment of "Sam's Song" to the surprising sophistication of "For The Sake Of Remembering" and “Vatican Roulette.” “Morris County Blues” evokes memories of Dave’s early years growing up in New Jersey, while the expansive “Knights Of The Island Counter” fully captures the redemptive spirit of youth. The entire EP will be available for free on mtvU.com as an exclusive download for one month beginning April 17th. "We're thrilled to offer his debut EP as an exclusive download on mtvU.com," says Amy Doyle, VP of Music and Talent at MTV.
mtvU and the network’s broadband channel, mtvU Über at mtvU.com, will also exclusively premiere the video for “Knights Of The Island Counter” on April 17th. The video, directed by Darren Doane (Blink 182, Hellogoodbye), was filmed as one shot that took 6 hours to get exactly right. An open call on Melillo’s MySpace brought in the young actors that appear in the video, which centers literally around a strip poker game during a teenager’s house party. The video will be available on demand exclusively at mtvU.com for one week beginning April 17th.
The 17-year old singer-songwriter signed to Drive-Thru Records in March of 2005. Despite heavy courtship from several major labels, Melillo chose the ten-year strong indie for it’s “family feel.” Over the course of last year, Melillo toured with such bands as The Rocket Summer, Something Corporate, Hellogoodbye, Yellowcard, and Less Than Jake. He began his career performing solo but recently enlisted a line-up of musicians to accompany him. Melillo and his band made their debut at the Drive-Thru Records’ SXSW Showcase last month in Austin TX. In addition Melillo scored MTVu's 2005 Woodie Awards and contributed a track to Drive-Thru Record’s Listen To Bob Dylan compilation. His rendition of “It Ain’t Me Babe” was lauded by Amazon.com as “believable as any version of this song ever.” Despite all these notable accomplishments, Melillo found time to attend high school. He will graduate from Celebration High in Florida in May.
Drive-Thru Records will release Talk Is Cheap to retail June 13, 2006.
