Five O’Clock Heroes
Set Their Sights & Sounds to the USA This Fall

both those cities.” – The Guardian, UK

5/29- The Hague Paard van Troje

After dedicating much time and love across the pond in Europe and beyond the band
have decided due to popular demand to release their debut album Stateside and are
set to announce a string of tour dates this Fall.

Transatlantic indie rockers Five O’Clock Heroes bridge the gap between time and the
ocean, producing some of the finest and freshest post-punk Brit-pop melodies around,
and are about to release their debut album “Bend to the Breaks” (Glaze Records 9/18)
in the USA. “Five O’Clock Hero” front man Antony Ellis began the band based upon
an incessant boredom and equal frustration towards The Motherland… “England was too
shit and cynical at the time” states Ellis who consequentlydecided to go west from
Northampton, equipped with his guitar, musical aspirations…
and an older brothers couch to crash on.

“Just who are the 5 0’Clock Heroes? You’re about to find out very, very soon!” - NME

It soon became clear that New York City was the only place to materialize his ambitions.
Ironically, his background in Blighty is what inspired him to draw cultural comparisons
when observing thedifferences between what makes both nations tick and of course, rock.
All he needed now was some like-minded visionaries in the Big Apple who could help channel
such pent up musical notions from avery talented ex patriot, such as Ellis..

–“I really wasn’t sure if the difference in backgrounds and cultures (of the members)
would be a hindrance or not but as it turns out, we were able to use it to help add another
dimension to the band…”–states American lead guitarist Elliot Thompson whom Mr. Ellis
met when somewhat fresh off the boat, they soon started playing together, shortly after
that they recruited Chicago born New York based Nader Khierbek (bass) who also
testifies that their origins “played a large role in what success we’ve had in both countries…”.
In true rock n’ roll fashion, after going through numerous drummers they finally
managed to find the perfect “beatsmith” Sam Embery, another Brit and the ideal addition to
what is now a powerful Anglo-American quartet, known to you and I as Five 0’Clock Heroes.

Culturally and musically, the lads are able to draw upon their diverse backgrounds and pull
from sources pertaining to class, color, creed, sex, money, Londoners and of course, New Yorkers.

“Feisty punk power pop” - Time Out UK

From Brit Pop to New York Punk, finding a common ground is certainly what gives the band
their edge collectively as a band and all as talented individuals. Five O’clock Heroes really
do embody so much ofwhat makes New York and it’s artistic culture, special and iconic.

After recording “Bend to the Breaks” (in James Iha & Adam Schlesinger’s New York based
Stratosphere Studios), it soon became apparent that this body jerking, head jangling musical
gem oozes uplifting post-punk pop’d up razor sharp riffs. Dowsed with an irresistibly driven
and dance-worthy bass. It is a surefire sign that the time has come and the world is ready for
Five 0’Clock Heroes.

From the spiky angular come-on of opener ‘Head Games’ to the joyous reggae-pop hybrid of
‘White Girls’, it’s an infuriatingly catchy collection of twelve potential singles. All tracks are
rife with bed hopping sexual frustration and choruses that etch themselves into your grey
matter after a mere cursory listen.

PARTICLE ANNOUNCES SUMMER TOUR INCLUDING DATES WITH 311 AND MATISYAHU

Los Angeles-based quartet Particle is currently recording its second studio album and will also tour extensively this summer including a string of dates with 311 and Matisyahu as part of the Unity Tour. The dates with 311 kick off with two nights at The Backyard in Austin and continue with shows in amphitheatres and arenas in Dallas, Houston, Baton Rouge, Jacksonville, Memphis, Birmingham and Pensacola.

Summer festival appearances include the 10,000 Lakes Festival on July 19 as well as the Forecastle Festival with Girl Talk and De La Soul. Particle will also headline a handful of summer dates including a Denver show at Cervantes Ballroom with Ivan Neville.

Since forming in the fall of 2000, Particle has enjoyed a successful ride that has taken them to eight countries for over 850 shows.

Particle forged its signature sound playing late night parties and high profile festivals across the country including Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits Festival, Coachella, and Bonnaroo to name a few. Once dubbed the 'late night kings', Particle has garnered a lot of hype for creating a series of out of the box special events across the country.

In 2004, the band released its debut album Launchpad produced by Tom Rothrock to critical praise from fans and media alike. Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and URB ran glowing features on the band and the Associated Press named the album among the year’s Top Ten. The album’s title track was remixed by Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay and released as an EP later that same year.

Shortly thereafter, Particle formed a percussive driven electronic side project with Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart called Hydra and created an entirely new repertoire for the tour. A sonic shift happened, allowing the band to add new directions to its already diverse style.

With the addition of Ben Combe on guitar and vocals, the band released a DVD and live CD featuring special guests Joe Satriani, Robbie Krieger, Blackalicious, and DJ Logic last year. They also recorded a song for the Scarface: The World Is Yours Video Game entitled “American Dream.” Particle is currently working on their sophomore studio effort which promises to be a departure from their previous recordings.

AUGUST BURNS RED – MESSENGERS NEW RECORD OUT JUNE 19th – EXCLUSIVE STREAM ON DECOYMUSIC.com

Messengers, the second record to drop from the minds and hands of Lancaster, PA quintet August Burns Red is more than just a collection of 11 raging metal songs that ravage the ears of their listeners with technical skill and immense passion. The record is, in fact, not only a musical collaboration, but also a lyrical one, where every member of the band contributed to the lyrical content with their own thoughts, ideas and messages. Hence the record’s intriguing title.

“We all contributed to the lyrics on this one whereas on Thrill Seeker our singer did all the writing,” Brubaker explains. “We all offered different ideas. Each of us wrote a set of lyrics and we’d pick a song we thought they’d fit with. It was a collaboration rather than one person.”

August Burns Red, who initially formed in March of 2003, began this writing process almost immediately after finishing their shattering debut, Thrill Seeker, at the end of 2005, collecting ideas to follow up that disc with something even bigger. The five members of August Burns Red spent almost the entire year and half they were touring in support of Thrill Seeker penning the songs that landed on Messengers, eventually entering the studio in February 2007 in Nashville with Tue Madsen (The Haunted, Himsa, Dark Tranquility, Extol), with whom the fivesome co-produced the album. The group spent the month refining the tracks into the aggressive, pounding songs you hear on the finished album.

“I think we wanted to continue with what our style is- stay in our niche- but expand upon it,” Brubaker says of the album. “It’s two years after our last record so we’re obviously going to be better at our instruments and more mature as songwriters. So to me it’s a natural progression from our album before.”

The album ranges from the heavily throbbing, double-bass-driven “Composure” to the crushing “An American Dream,” a song that drags the listener along by Luhrs’ callous screams and the band’s penchant for driving, metallic guitar riffs and intricate drumwork. The complexity of August Burns Red’s songwriting is apparent throughout, a clear indication of a band with rabid ambition and a burgeoning talent for crafting tight, compelling songs. Longtime fans fear not, though; Messengers is still the product of the same intense band who continue to blow the minds of everyone lucky enough to witness their memorable live show.

“I think it sounds like us,” Brubaker notes of Messengers. “But it’s more mature and musicianship-wise it’s way better. It’s much more technical. I think it really shows how far we’ve come.”

AUGUST BURNS RED and DecoyMusic.com proudly announce that MESSENGERS, the band’s JUNE 19th Solid State Records release will be exclusively streamed on the website, starting at 12:00am CST on June 18th and wrapping up on June 21st at 11:59pm CST. The Lancaster, Pennsylvania based hardcore act will be bringing their crushing sound across the states all summer long. AUGUST BURNS RED have toured along the likes of As I Lay Dying, Terror, Chiodos, Between the Buried and Me, Bleeding Through, Haste The Day amongst many more.

STRAY CATS

TO TOUR THE U.S. WITH THE PRETENDERS AND ZZ TOP

“Best Of The Stray Cats Live,” “Rumble In Brixton” CD To Be Released This Fall

Los Angeles, CA: Stray Cats announced that they will soon be on the road beginning a U.S. Summer tour in support of their upcoming live CD and DVD “Best Of The Stray Cats Live,” “Rumble In Brixton.” Release date is set for this fall and will feature one new track from the legendary Rockabilly band.

Stray Cats, the band that put Rockabilly music back on the record charts in the early-'80s, scored several big hits on both sides of the Atlantic thanks to a striking visual 1950’s style brought “up to date” with over-the-top pompadours and colorful tattoos, as well as genuine musical chops that evoked the best players of rockabilly's original heyday. The music had a rhythm that was rock solid yet loose, the singer could croon or shout and the guitar playing demanded respect. It was elegant yet hard, jazzy yet completely rocking. Their music and style were like nothing happening in pop culture at that time. Formed by guitarist/vocalist Brian Setzer, upright bass player Lee Rocker and drummer Slim Jim Phantom in the Long Island town of Massapequa, NY, in 1979, the trio shared a love for Rockabilly music and after banging around New York and Philadelphia for a few months, in the summer of 1980, they were persuaded by a mutual friend to hop a plane to London where a rockabilly revival movement was just beginning to emerge.

They were popular right out of the box with the release of their self-titled album in 1981 that scored three straight hits with "Runaway Boys," "Rock This Town," and "Stray Cat Strut." Deciding to test their luck in America, they signed with EMI America and in 1982 released their U.S. debut, Built for Speed, which compiled the highlights from their two British LPs. Helped by extensive airplay on MTV at the height of the anything-goes new wave era, "Rock This Town" and "Stray Cat Strut" both hit the American Top Ten, over a year after their British chart peaks. As a result, Built for Speed was a smash, and the Stray Cats were seen as avatars of retro style. Their second American album, Rant n' Rave With the Stray Cats, appeared in 1983 and produced another Top Ten hit in "(She's) Sexy + 17," as well as a Top 40 entry in the doo wop-styled ballad "I Won't Stand in Your Way."

The Cats had clawed their way all over the globe from 1981 to 1984 when they decided to go their separate ways for a while. In mid-1988, the three felt the time was right to bring it back again and reunited until 1992 when they split a second time. A one-off reunion show in California in 2003 created such a good vibe between the three guys that they decided to mount a month-long summer tour of Europe to celebrate both the Rockabilly trio’s 25 year career and the 50th birthday of rock and roll in the cities where it all started for them. So much excitement was generated with the 17 show sold-out tour that is was decided that one performance would be documented and released as a live DVD and album. Rumble In Brixton was recorded at the sold out show in London at the legendary Brixton Academy where the atmosphere was electric, and the energy was vibrant, almost dangerous.

Now for the first time in 15 years, Stray Cats are coming together one more time for a full-scale U.S. tour with ZZ Top and The Pretenders. Tour dates are listed below, for further information regarding the dates and advance interviews with Slim Jim Phantom please contact Deborah Radel or Heather Lindner at DRPR, 310.360.3997 or email pr@drpr.us

You’ve seen mosh pits before, now check out the mother of them all! DevilDriver, Los Angeles’ thrash-metal machine, have just posted footage from this year’s Download Festival in Donnington, England. More than 7,000 fans filled the Dimebag Stage area to lose their minds in one of the largest circle pits ever filmed!! The footage can be found at http://www.youtube.com/devildrivertube. DevilDriver are currently on tour to support their upcoming album, The Last Kind Words, come and see for yourself how work the crowd into an incredible frenzy.

“The pit for DevilDriver at Download was astounding…absolutely huge,” said a Roadrunner Records employee who was in attendance. “The tent was packed with 7,000 DevilDriver fans going apeshit! Dez was warned twice by security but just responded by pushing the crowd back further. And with the crowd being squeezed out to the sides of the tent, some of the metal barriers were pushed over and bent out of shape as kids trampled on them. Wait ‘til you see it: in-fucking-sane!”

DevilDriver submitted a proposal to the Guinness Book of World Records for “Largest Circle Pit,” but was turned down by the record keepers. Here is what Guinness told Roadrunner Records in response to DevilDriver's proposed "Largest Circle Pit" world record: “Thank you for sending us the details of your recent record proposal for 'Largest Circle Pit.’ We are afraid to say that we are unable to accept this as a Guinness World Record. Unfortunately, as there is no way you can physically define where any circle/mosh pit starts and ends, we cannot accept this as a category.” The news from Guinness, however, did not stop the band from trying.

The DevilDriver performance at Download Festival scored “KKKKK” from England’s Kerrang! Magazine, who also gave the monstrous pit a shout-out in their review of the festival. Check out the video of the pit in all its violent glory at http://www.youtube.com/devildrivertube, and prepare for The Last Kind Words, to be released on July 31!!

“KKKK…The gods of metal gave us a word for records like this one: Killer…the whole thing is quite simply metal as fuck.” – Kerrang Magazine

RODDY WOOMBLE, SINGER FROM THE BAND IDLEWILD, TO RELEASE DEBUT SOLO ALBUM “MY SECRET IS MY SILENCE” IN THE U.S. JULY 10, 2007

"A stunning piece of work." - 5/5, THE SUNDAY TIMES

"Folking brilliant." - 4.5/5, THE SUN

"...beautiful and lilting songs." - 4/5, THE SUNDAY HERALD

My Secret Is My Silence, the debut solo album from Roddy Woomble, lead singer of Idlewild, has been confirmed for July 10 release on 7-10 Music. The 11- track album was recorded during the downtime between Idlewild records in South Yorkshire over nine days with friends of his from the Scottish folk community.

Woomble’s solo endeavor is an album full of stories about language and communication, about nature and the people that surround us and make our environment. Inspired by the poetry of Robert Frost and George MacKay Brown, as well as by the time Woomble has spent up in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, "My Secret is My Silence" is Woomble at his poetic best.'(It's) about the spaces between words, the language of silence, which is something you see a lot of in Scotland, particularly with the older people up in the highlands and islands. It's about what we don't say, what we leave on the table for other people to pick up. It's about understanding the context of your life, trying to make sense of that while you live it!" says Woomble.

Five of the eleven songs that make up 'My Secret is My Silence' were written with Woomble’s Idlewild band mate and co-songwriter, guitarist Rod Jones, two with the album's producer (and BBC radio 2 folk musician of the year 2003) John McCusker, two with childhood friend and singer Michael Angus (in Glasgow's alternative folk band FOXFACE), and one with acclaimed borders based folk singer Karine Polwart. The record features an assortment of musicians including drummer David Gow, bassist Ailidh Lennon (from the Scottish band SONS AND DAUGHTERS and Woomble’s wife). As well as appearances from some of folk music's most accomplished players, flautist Michael Mcgoldrick, accordionist Andy Cutting and guitarist Ian Carr and popular folk singers Kate Rusby and Dave Burland.

Born in the west of Scotland and raised all around the UK, France, and America, Woomble began his professional music career at the ripe age of 19 fronting his band Idlewild. The band broke into the UK scene with a brash brand of indie punk, only to evolve and mature into a full-on arena-ready force, landing tours with U2, the Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam and REM. Idlewild have released five critically acclaimed albums, two of which debuted in the UK top ten as well as charting twelve top forty singles.

Rock Legend Steve Perry works with Punk Band!!

So what could Steve Perry, the legendary lead singer of Journey possibly have to do with a punk band? Well, here it goes: While Guff was in the studio working on their upcoming new album, Steve walked in to visit a friend. He was so impressed with Guff that he showed up unannounced two days later and asked Guff to cover an unreleased Journey song. In the end, Steve not only produced the song “I Can See It In Your Eyes” but also sang on it! The song is featured on Guff’s brand new full-length “Symphony of Voices” which will be released on June 26th on Go-Kart Records.

Check out some of the songs of “Symphony of Voices” in our beautiful online stream at www.GokartRecords.com !

Big Business Announce US Tour w/ TOOL!!!!!!!

"Warren and Willis' thunder-prog has never sounded so fully formed and abrasive, and Warren's voice never so triumphant." - Spin Magazine

It's true, America's heaviest-hitting monster duo, BIG BUSINESS, has just announced they will be hitting the road w/ one of planet Earth's greatest bands, TOOL!

Prepare to witness the face-pummeling awesomeness of Big Business as they melt the minds of prog-metal legends, and their fans, in the cities listed below. Congratulations guys (and thanks for the stop in Jersey!)

Big Business is bigger and better than ever, with better hair, bigger hits, and the kind of overwhelming Norman Schwarzkopf-style force that rolls like thunder, stings like a missile, and - above all - takes no shit.

On Here Come the Waterworks, their second full-length, bassist/vocalist Jared Warren and drummer Coady Willis (both of whom also happen to be the newest members of underground super-legends the Melvins) unfurl all the mammoth riffs, furious vocals and blazing drum work you've come to expect - nay, DEMAND - from LA's answer to Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. No, wait, make that Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs. Either way, there's a new sheriff in town - two of 'em, actually.

This is the new Big Business album, and it's better than their first: harder, faster, and catchier. But since that first long player was so damn good, we're left with no choice but to already proclaim Here Come the Waterworks as one of the top releases of 2007.

Putting on Here Come the Waterworks induces instant first pumping. Its ethos is triumph and absolute PMA -- Positive Mental Attitude. In fact, you're likely to find your mind wandering back to the best scenes in Vision Quest, and that closing moment of greatness in Over the Top when Stallone turns his ball cap around and pummels the competition.

Big Business always tour the shit out of their records because they're rock machines. I mean, they even record tour EPs! Plan to catch them in your town and at festivals this summer laying waste to the competition.

Truth:

Willis has become one of the most inventive percussionists currently making heavy music. Watching him play alongside Warren is a thing of astounding beauty and power. This time around, Big Biz have again tapped producer Phil Ek (Shins, Built To Spill), and it sounds incredible. - Transworld Skateboarding

Bass player Jarred Warren (formerly of Karp and Tight Bros. from Way Back When) is an incredible vocal force, the kind that budding rock singers can only dream about. - Alarm Press

Big Business could perhaps one day rival Mastodon's sea-shanty sludgefests. - Decibel Magazine

Some of the most relentless, unyielding, and profound music in heavy metal today. - Thrasher Magazine

These guys manage to deconstruct, reinvent, and then rebuild the typical noise rock formula. - Chord Magazine

Big Business drowns CCR and prog in the tar pits, coming off like an undead Uriah Heep. - PaperThinWalls.com

Two guys doing the work of 20 - Orange County Weekly

"The band, on Waterworks, went a different production route and signed up, of all people, Phil Ek, indie-rock super-producer. Waterworks, as a result, sounds gigantic, vast, and also sparklingly clean." - Pitchforkmedia.com

Tracklist for Here Come the Waterworks:
1. Just as the Day was Dawning
2. Hands Up
3. Shields
4. Grounds for Divorce
5. Another Fourth of July ... Ruined
6. Start Your Digging
7. I'll Give You Something to Cry About

Team Clermont Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Team Clermont Summer Festival and Blue Ribbon Ball:

Deerhunter, Starlight Mints, Castanets, Phosphorescent, Calvin Johnson, Bobby Conn, and Ladybug Transistor among performers!

Team Clermont, a full-service PR firm based in Athens, GA, has announced the dates and lineup of its 10th Annual Summer Festival and Blue Ribbon Ball, marking the tenth year of the company’s operation. The Summer Festival celebration is a music event that showcases artists on Team Clermont’s client roster as well as other favorites, both national and local, over the course of four nights (and a day, too!). The last night of the festival, The Blue Ribbon Ball, is affectionately known as “The Prom,” and typically includes a featured artist doing cover songs and originals in the manner of the proverbial, slightly cheesy “prom band.”

For a constantly updated schedule and Summer Festival/Prom news, go here: http://teamclermont.com/2007tcprom/index.html

This year’s “prom band” will be Chicago glam-rock raconteur Bobby Conn! Bobby is a Chicago rocker who has told many stories and known many faces (most of them obscured by stage lights, smoke and mirrors. Say what you will about freedom and success, Bobby Conn knows that self-delusion is the American dream. Does faith require spectacle? Is self-promotion the primary goal of American society? Bobby Conn knows the answer is YES, loud and clear. He is a student of the motivational speaker and the self-help guru and values confidence and authority above truth and knowledge. He loves a winner, but blames himself for his own lack of success. He is deluded and lost in the fantasy of his own ego, yet the pathos of his delusion arouses sympathy and is the key to his appeal. He is a walking metaphor for American culture. King for a Day is Bobby Conn's latest opus and his ode to self-delusion and celebrity status. It's the definitive Bobby Conn album, and it's all based on true stories. Call it his Don Quixote, the tale of his own delusions and everyone else's.

Previous Team Clermont Summer Festival performers have included Danger Mouse, The Wrens, Of Montreal, The Mountain Goats, Man Man, Dark Meat, Elf Power, John Vanderslice, The Polyphonic Spree, Trans Am, John Roderick of the Long Winters, Songs: Ohia, Man…or Astroman?, Enon, Eleni Mandell, Pattern is Movement, Radar Bros., and the Rosebuds.

The Blue Ribbon Ball, sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon, is an actual prom-like event with a professional prom photographer to snap portraits, balloons, spiked punch, and the aforementioned prom band. This year’s Blue Ribbon Ball will feature a James Bond theme because it seems apropos given the year (2007, get it?). Also planned for the Summer Festival is the annual W’s vs. K’s Radio Station Kickball Showdown, sponsored by K Records. Last year, in a bloody battle for supremacy, the W’s prevailed, and the W stations look to defend their title this year.

The schedule is as follows (all times subject to change):

Wednesday, July 25th—40 Watt Club, Athens, GA
Starlight Mints. Starlight Mints are a group of beautiful pop mutants: four oddballs whose love for archetypal pop music and AM radio has provided a rock-solid foundation for a whole bunch of inspired weirdness. They began jamming together in the '90s, giving birth to their own funky brand of heavily instrumental, surrealistically worded pop sound. Maybe you could call it bubblegum psych. It all adds up to something very grand: one marvelous piece of orchestrated, catchy surrealism after another. The band combines classic string arrangements, cheeky boyish vocals, and a feel good vibe to bring a glossy, fresh sound to indie rock.

The Ladybug Transistor. This Brooklyn-based collective crafts a delicate mix of hazy, airbrushed melancholia infused with a brighter undercurrent - a promise of good things to come in a country tinged manner that'll have the hardest of hearts melting. Channeling Fred Neil and Bobby Goldsboro, Gary Olson fulfills his promise as one of the more inspired songwriters of the past decade and anchors his current batch of songs with his restrained baritone.

tin cup prophette. Songwriter/leader Amanda Kapousouz whips up an atmosphere of profound and powerful minimalism with her violin loops and energetic, but sparse beats. tin cup prophette’s sound is twofold; she still holds onto the traditional Irish music that saved her from putting down her fiddle for good, and her original music forges into a genre all its own. She remains an active performer in both the indie rock and Irish traditional realms. tin cup prophette’s live performances are always memorable, whether you’re watching her red-haired bow blur in a whirlwind of uptempo fiddle tunes or whether you’re watching her loop her violin into pedals, creating a chamber of strings to back up her voice. Currently, tin cup prophette’s debut album of original songs, Liar and the Thief, is receiving much praise and was nominated for Album of the Year in this year’s Flagpole Music Awards. She has also earned a four star review in Paste Magazine.

Summer Hymns. Zachary Gresham’s long-running project Summer Hymns just released what might be its finest album ever, 2006’s Backward Masks, a cohesing of the band’s experimental and traditional elements. Summer Hymns’ songs are bittersweet and frequently lovely, but they come imbued with a shocking and caustic wit, which often translates to the band’s free-flowing live performances.

Thursday, July 26th—Caledonia Lounge, Athens, GA
Deerhunter. Deerhunter began in 2001 with the ambition of fusing the lulling hypnotic states induced by ambient and minimalist music with the clang and propulsion of garage rock. The band has weathered chaotic line-up changes, the death of a member, and much discouragement. Their live performances almost always leave audiences polarized. They are a five-piece based in Atlanta. Currently signed to Kranky Records, the band’s recent LP, Cryptograms, was highly acclaimed, most notably by Pitchfork Media.

Bottom of the Hudson. Philadelphia power-poppers Bottom of the Hudson are playing behind Fantastic Hawk, the band’s most anthemic and complete work to date (and also its first as a multi-person unit to date) with more aggressive arrangements, clearer production, and airtight songwriting without sacrificing the mid-fi charm for which the band is known.

Ham1. Jim Willingham is an intrepid English-as-a-second-language teacher by day and enigmatic songwriter and bandleader by night. Willingham’s dusty, surf-and-western-influenced indie folk is ably fleshed out by an ace band that includes Eric Harris, formerly of Olivia Tremor Control. Add trombones, cellos, and found sounds and you have a recipe for success. Ham1 is releasing its second album, The Captain’s Table, in the fall on Orange Twin Records.

King of Prussia. One of Athens’ hottest bands, King of Prussia’s epic pop anthems will stick to your ribs. Band scion Brandon Hanick’s literate, poignant lyrics bounce along rich Brit-tinged songs that recall Belle and Sebastian, Richard Hawley, and even the decidedly non-British Unrest. The band’s first EP, Save the Scene, is a work of confidence and craft.

Friday, July 27th—40 Watt Club, Athens, GA

Castanets. Castanets is American music drowned then reborn clear-eyed and wet with sea spray. Castanets is murderous nights and the 10 west sunset and crying gulls. Castanets is Raymond Raposa. Castanets is Raymond Raposa alone, walking through the dark and crowded dancefloor, singing bare voiced (rangy, high, cracked and real) with acoustic guitar. Castanets is a four-piece or a five-piece, six-piece, seven-piece, all-of-us-everywhere-piece stomping out electric tombstone chants or something that sounds like Pink Floyd with more heart. Castanets is delta heart, Nashville hands, outer space brain. Castanets is Cathedral (Asthmatic Kitty, 2004) and First Light's Freeze (Asthmatic Kitty, 2005). Castanets is banjo and strings of bells and howling feedback and high plains drifting and horn sections and brother folk-rock riding in a beater Datsun with sister free-jazz. Note: Castanets and Phosphorescent will be playing together as one unit for this performance.

Phosphorescent. Matthew Houck's Phosphorescent recorded two frighteningly brilliant works, 2003's A Hundred Times or More and 2004's The Weight of Flight EP, both released on the WARM label to quiet but lavish praise. While they weren't widely heard, those who that did tune in felt the spark in Houck's cracked voice, wondered at the weird and beautiful poetics, sensed the involuntary smile behind the lyrics, and settled in for the ride. Aw Come Aw Wry (Misra) moved the band's loose, ever-shifting arrangements away from the sparse and melodic and toward the rowdy and unhinged, at times conjuring a free, revival-tent spirit awash in homespun orchestrations and brushed with spiritual and psychedelic undertones. Phosphorescent is entrancing, unruly, cacophonous. Note: Castanets and Phosphorescent will be playing together as one unit for this performance.

Arizona. Arizona is the ka-tet of five close friends who like to drink mezcal and sling songs forth. Each member dresses in a sexy pajama outfit. The band currently wanders in Asheville, North Carolina but still calls New York City home. The music sounds like sweetly sleeping faeries nestled in the dewy grass of a magical land while dark, sharp, drooling creatures lurk nearby. Arizona is a masterless wanderer. Listening to Arizona's richly imaginative music will allow you to hear colors and taste thoughts, to hold moonlight in your hand, and to better know your own heart.

A Northern Chorus. A Northern Chorus is a string-laden band of Canadians whose songs deal in the momentous and beautiful. Reviews regularly use words like “epic” and “ambitious” and they are not lying. ANC has toured the continent several times, and have even crossed the pond for a small tour of the UK. They've steadily gained popularity in North America, and are anxious to do the same overseas. Over the last few records, the band’s sweeping pieces have gained tempo and volume without losing the constant striving for emotionally stirring arrangements.

Saturday, July 28th—Kickball Tournament
Annual W’s vs. K’s Radio Station Kickball Tournament—Last year’s game brought sweat, tears, blood, sweat, the thrill of victory, the soul-punishing agony of defeat, and more sweat. Over 50 college radio station and record label types participated in a kickball game of epic proportions. This year’s event should surpass all other kickball games played ever in the history of the world. The W’s are anxious to defend their crown!

Performance by Calvin Johnson. Based in Olympia, Wash., Calvin's work in underground culture started as a teenage fan volunteering at the local community radio station, KAOS-FM. He moved on to writing for fanzines, organizing music and film events, playing music in various ill-fated bands. Calvin established K, a locally oriented media outlet, in 1982. In 1993 Calvin founded Dub Narcotic, a recording studio, in which he has documented the work of the Somehow Is and Never Was, such as Mirah, the Blow, Versus, Built to Spill, Fitz of Depression, Make-Up, and Little Wings. It has also been the incubator of many Calvin experiments in collaboration and self-expression, such as Beat Happening, Halo Benders and Dub Narcotic Sound System. The decade of the double zeroes has seen Calvin Johnson set out into the world, acoustic guitar in hand, as a solo artist of musical platitudes.

Saturday, July 28th—Happy Hour—the Go! Bar, Athens, GA
Benjy Ferree. The cinematic element of Benjy Ferree's music is by no means an accident. Many of Benjy's songs have origins and inspirations taken from films, much like a detail taken from a painting. Furthermore, Benjy was inspired at an impressionable age by Will Oldham: not to rock, but to act, thanks to young Will's performance in John Sayles' Matewan. The movie held a special attraction to Benjy as his family originated from the film's West Virginia setting and characters in the movie were based on flesh and blood (The Hatfields of that famous familial squabble, if you must know). After high school, he moved straight to Los Angeles to pursue "the craft," supporting himself in a variety of service industry jobs (including a brief stint in the employ of David Lynch as an au pair). Frustrated with his experiences there, Benjy returned to The Mid-Atlantic. While bartending at The Black Cat in DC, he was befriended and encouraged by Brendan Canty (Fugazi), amongst many others, to focus instead on the songs Benjy had been writing for his own personal enjoyment.

Abra Moore. A founding member of Poi Dog Pondering and GRAMMY™-nominated singer of the top 40 hit, “Four Leaf Clover”, Abra Moore has learned a few things about music, life and the intrinsic value of happiness and balance. The quiet confidence she’s found seeps through every element of On The Way, the new record she’s made with long-time collaborator and producer Mitch Watkins. The new collection is subtle, seductive and assured. In her own words, it’s a “gentle sway” of an album. It recaptures the organic, intuitive style that led to worldwide acclaim for her breakthrough album, Strangest Places.

Saturday, July 28th—Blue Ribbon Ball—40 Watt Club, Athens, GA
The 10th Annual Blue Ribbon Ball featuring Bobby Conn. Chicago rocker Bobby Conn will do a mixture of covers and originals as guests at the prom will gadabout in their finest James Bond-influenced attire! The prom will feature decorations, photos, refreshments, secretive makeout sessions, too-close dancing, and plenty of Pabst Blue Ribbon. It’s the yearly highlight of the Athens social calendar! Bobby Conn is known for his wild live shows, so it should be a real treat for all!

DJ sets by DJ Twin Powers. Dan Geller (aka Tiny Danger, Twin Powers, Thumper) has been involved in Biofuels research for over 10 years. He received a Master’s degree in Biological Engineering where he studied the use of alternative feedstocks for the production of Biodiesel. He also holds an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry. He has authored over 10 scientific journal articles on biofuels and other energy topics. Dan also started the Kindercore Record label and was a member of bands such as I Am the World Trade Center, The Agenda, and, most recently, USSR and Ruby Isle.

Tickets will be on sale at the door of each respective venue. Ticket pricing announcements to follow.
