FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM

RICHARD STANLEY TO DIRECT VIDEO PROMO FOR MOURNING SUN TRACK

Cult film director and producer Richard Stanley, whose post apocalyptic visions were given life to in his  nihilistic sci-fi classic Hardware (1990) is set to revitalize his long standing relationship with Carl McCoy and Fields of the Nephilim. Stanley, whose intensely personal blockbuster Hardware (which featured a cameo from Carl McCoy) was followed by the critically acclaimed Dust Devil (1992), turned his back on mainstream cinema to pursue his preoccupation with the occult and its interaction with what we call reality. Having just completed a BBC documentary on the voodoo culture of Haiti his next project will be to direct a promo video for an as yet to be announced track from Fields of the Nephilim’s triumphant studio album Mourning Sun. Stanley has created an impressive body of work over the last two decades, retaining an intensely loyal fan base, not to mention the critical acclaim of his peers. Famed for declining many more commissions than he accepts, it is testament to Fields of the Nephilim’s resurgence that he has chosen to work on this project.

Stanley was also responsible for the band’s first ever video promos, Preacher Man and Blue Water almost two decades ago. Carl and Richard have remained firm friends ever since, and the band’s renaissance has provided the impetus they needed to reignite their creative relationship. ‘It’s a meeting of minds, and we have unfinished business!’ said Carl McCoy this week, after hearing the news. ‘Richard and I go back a long way, and he has remained an admirer of the band.’

Carl’s regard for Richard’s creative talent is also obvious. ‘He has a unique vision and perspective which  parallels my own in musical terms. We have subconsciously been waiting to work with each other on a serious Nephilim venture for a while. With everything falling into place with the re-emergence of Fields of the Nephilim, the time is right.’

’Mourning Sun has never just been about releasing a collection of songs’ continues McCoy, ’Listened to as an album, it forms a cohesive whole that takes the listener through a sonic landscape. Richard’s intuitive knowledge of that landscape will add a luxuriantly textured visual layer to the music, and the video promises to become a work of art in its own right.’

With a twenty year gap between collaborations, McCoy and Stanley are looking forward to recreating visually the intensity and intricacy of Mourning Sun. They share a vision, a vision they want to share with us too. After twenty years, fate has finally provided the opportunity for them to create a cinematic masterpiece to rival Mourning Sun’s considerable success.

Danava

Kemado Records has officially added it's 10th band to the roster and their first from the Pacific Northwest, Danava from Portland, OR. Danava (pronounced DON-UH-VUH) have been assaulting crowds since 2003 touring up and down the West Coast and once nationally with Glass Candy.  Danava’s take on Heavy Prog/Hard Rock is unique and rounded out with twin leads, ethereal, sci-fi synths and bombastic drums - calling for comparisions to Gong, Queen and Voivod.  Kemado was turned onto the band after hearing demos last summer, which led to one of the songs,  “By The Mark”, making an appearance on the label’s soon to be released heavy compilation, INVADERS (out 4/25). The band is in the process of recording their debut full length which will be released this Fall.  In the meantime, they will be playing the Noise Pop Festival this weekend in San Francisco with Wolfmother and will tour this summer with Parchman Farm & Snowfoxxes.  Check out more about Danava at: http://kemado.com/site/artists.php?req=show&artist=11

"Had David Bowie seduced Black Sabbath and the coupling been consummated in a

waterbed of liquid LSD, the music would sound as epic as Danava's two demo

songs." - THE STRANGER

THE CONTROL GROUP TO RELEASE

THE GOLDEN GODS

THE THORNY CROWN OF ROCK N ROLL’ NATIONAL TOUR TO FOLLOW

The Golden Gods self-produced debut CD The Thorny Crown Of Rock N’ Roll is ten solid tracks of crashing guitars, arena rhythms and infectious vocals creating a unique sound with a retro flare. Look for the CD to hit the street April 25th.

When singer/guitarist Simon Scott moved to the United States from the U.K. he carried blueprints for his ultimate rock band in suitcases, eventually setting them down in an old hunting lodge outside  San Francisco. In 2002 Simon formed the band Phocophony with bassist Dynamite “Dan” Trilk. Their convincing, raw, rock done up with surgical timing and a fantastic voice was sought out by many on the Bay Area music scene. Misspelled and mispronounced by all, the band changed when a demo fell into the hands of drummer Richard Shelton Davis (Fine To Drive/Pop Smear). The three shook hands after a magic session and sealed a brotherhood of wit, light, smoke and creativity. Obliged to put the shake back in Shakespeare via cord and amplifier, they debut as The Golden Gods.  In a short period they created a buzz, known for their live show; a supercharged, smoke and lights, rock & roll extravaganza.

The Control Group is proud to present the debut full-length release from a band that built a second fog machine from scratch. “The Thorny Crown of Rock And Roll”  is 10 songs with classic double album feel. Additional vocals provided by gospel singers Janie Hendrix & Pamela Hawkins (The Golden Broads). This record praises the deep roots rock while straddling instantly fresh and fun as hell. The Golden Gods heart for showmanship is bolstered by MENSA level technical skill and proficiency of instrument to dismiss bullshit, while their love for each other and the art of rock and roll push them through the sunsets.

The Golden Gods will tour the U.S. this spring to support their studio efforts.

THEE MORE SHALLOWS

"Monkey Vs. Shark" (Turn Records 5.9.06)

"Monkey vs. Shark" is the latest release from one of San Francisco's brightest indie bands, Thee More Shallows. 2005 was a breakout year for Dee Kesler and company as their full length record, "More Deep Cuts" (Turn Records), was universally praised as being dark, sinister, epic and fresh, as well as being hailed by many as one of the best records of the year, and landing them on nation-wide tours along-side John Vanderslice, 31 Knots, Jim Yoshii Pile Up and more.

"Monkey vs. Shark" is a 7-song EP collection of lush new songs that pick up where "More Deep Cuts" leaves off. Moody, intense, layered indie rock songs with a hint of paranoia and Kesler's hushed vocals that drag you into the deep end and includes their stark rendition of Al Green's "I Can't Get Next To You" (first performed on BBC 1 in the UK and has been described as "a beautiful soul song...with the soul sucked out of it,") as well as a new version of "Freshman Thesis" (originally appearing on "More Deep Cuts") remixed by Odd Nodsam and Why? (Anticon).

FLYING "Just-One-Second-Ago-Broken Eggshell" (Mill Pond 5.9.06)

The world of psychedelic-folk music has just been changed forever.

Flying is a collective of four artists translating magic words and mysterious noises into chaotically sweet and ardent performances. Howling, complex, disheveled, gentle and playful, their music is at once intimate and otherworldly. It is new-dream-out-jazz-pop-noise-folk, invoking spirits Stevie Wonder, Sun Ra, Brigitte Fontaine, and Os Mutantes. Contemporary points of reference include Animal Collective, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, and Deerhoof.

"Just-one-second-ago-broken Eggshell" is Flying's debut full-length, out May 9th on Mill Pond Records (see also Luke Temple, Robert Stillman's "Horses") . The album was recorded at home, on beaches, in barns and fields over 6 months. Old accordions, broken pianos, buzzing guitars, thickets of drum claps mingle with harsh trills and murky creaks. Influenced by everything, Eggshell is nonetheless a search and discovery mission, a set of narratives balanced between song and sound, a testament of anxiety and hope; a dense, fantastic adventure.

Based out of Brooklyn, Flying have been playing around NYC and the Northeast for the past year and a half with such bands as Deerhoof, Tunnel of Love, USAisamonster, Dirty Projectors, and Lavender Diamond. Look for their US tour this summer.

SENSATIONS

"Listen To My Shapes" (Camera Records 5.23.06)

Members of the Mother Hips and ex-Cake drummer unite for a modern approach to garage rock that meets the psychedelic harmonies of the British Invasion complete with clever lyrics and strong melodies.

** Sensations to perform at San Francisco’s Noise Pop 2006 Festival **

"Listen To My Shapes" is a tactile invitation to an elevated pop consciousness offered by this brainchild of singer/guitarist Greg Loiacono, best known for his frontline role in California Soul institution, The Mother Hips. Sensations move with the natural grace of Roy Orbison, and Buddy Holly & the Crickets infused with ‘70s power trio muscle. Formed in the summer of 2003, they bounce hard like the Soft Boys/Robyn Hitchcock, My Morning Jacket and ‘60s British Invasion greats. In Loiacono’s words, it’s "a macho/sensitive music that explores modern day psychedelia and the feelings of body and heart.”

Bringing in a wealth of road won experience, Loiacono, abetted by bassist Paul Hoaglin (Mother Hips) and drummer Todd Roper (ex-Cake), Sensations rescue pop music from the slagheap of today's charts, returning it to the cerebrally breezy tradition of the Kinks & Hollies. What's more, they build on that darkly tuneful legacy. Not merely nostalgic recreationists, Sensations breathe creativity & sonic verve into every crevice of this lean, punchy marvel.

KIILA

 "Heartcore" (Say Hey Records 5.30.06)

Welcome to the minimalist and psychedelic world of KIILA. From the icy-white northern European country of Finland, KIILA produces electronic-textured, dark and fun freak-folk, complete with some of the craziest equipment that would make a technophile blush, combined with woodwinds, acoustic guitars, and more.

"Heartcore" was originally recorded and released in 2001 when the band was still a duo. It features the compositions of Fonal Records founder Sami Sanpakkila, who has released records under the moniker Es, and Niko-Matti Ahti. The language of the songs moves from English to Finnish, and the human voices rest on a warm texture of sounds from an array of acoustic and electronic instruments. Carefully arranged songs alternate with those improvised on the spot, all bearing the mark of a handcrafted article.  "Heatcore" embodies Fonal's self-described motto," small and warm."

Previously available only as an import, Say Hey Records has licensed both Kiila records from the formidable and growing free folk collective that is under the umbrella of Fonal Records. "Heartcore" marks the first official release for Kiila in the United States and will be followed shortly with the re-issue of Kiila's second album, "Silmat Sulkaset".

The Spirit That Guides US (TSTGU) is the Dutch power-indie-rock phenomenon, who effortlessly blend the best elements of most of today’s current rock scene (punk, hardcore, shoegaze, british pop, and indie-rock). With some of the best songs put to wax and a hidden gem in the European rock scene, the band’s diversity makes them almost impossible to classify or categorize. At times, sounding like AFI or Thursday, othertimes Radiohead or Echo and the Bunnymen, and still others even Trail of Dead or Superchunk, The Spirit That Guides Us know one thing, they rock, and they rock HARD!

Art Brut

Sign to US Label–Downtown Records-Out May 23rd

Exclusive US Tracklisting with 3 Bonus Tracks / Tour Dates Below with Gil Mantera’s Party Dream

GMPD voted Best Live SXSW Show on villagevoice.com: http://www.villagevoice.com/blogs/sxsw/archive/2006/03sxsw_2006_final.php

“In the spirit of sex you’re too drunk for, drugs that don’t work, and rock cliches that should be sharpied to your forehead, these Brits deconstruct bombast via bombastic guitar riffs. Sing speaking like he’s working through a Learn to Read Handbook, frontman Eddie Argos makes fun of star-fuckers and meatheads. Star-fuckers and meatheads will totally headbang along” -    SPIN Magazine

UK’s most fierce and fiery rock ensemble, Art Brut, who have sold out every show in their recent North American tour have finally been signed to Downtown Records, home of Gnarls Barkley and The Eagles of Death Metal.  ‘Bang Bang Rock And Roll’, the debut album from Art Brut released in the UK on Fierce Panda/Banana Recordings, has topped everybody’s year end list (as an import) including landing the #3 spot on Pitchfork Media and # 38 on SPiN’s year end list, will now be released May 23rd on Downtown Records with 3 new tracks. Art Brut will continue their sold out shows in the US beginning at SXSW and ending April 29 at Coachella.

Art Brut formed some 18 months ago after singer Eddie Argos decided that he wanted to be in a band because he wants everybody to be in a band, and also because he wants to be a superstar. After deciding to form a band, he quickly recruited Ian Catskilkin (Guitar) and Freddy Feedback (Bass). The band was completed when they met drummer Mikey B on the back of a bus and Jasper Future (guitarist from Eddie’s old Band -Art Gobblins) joined a few months later. Five minutes after this happened (actually it may have been slightly longer than that) they had written their debut single ‘Formed A Band’.  ‘Formed a band, we formed a band, look at us we formed a band’ they sang/shouted. ‘We’re going to be the band that writes the song that makes Israel and Palestine get along’ they said, and furthermore ‘We’re going to write a song as universal as Happy Birthday’. Rough Trade released it as a single, lots of people thought they were joking or being ironic but lots of people liked it anyway. It didn’t stop there though, they wanted everyone to form a band so that popular culture would mean more to them. They wanted people to set up franchise bands called Art Brut and they wanted those bands to cover their songs. Again, everyone thought they were joking.

After that, a lot of people were left thinking “how do you follow a single called ‘Formed A Band’ about forming a band?”. The answer is that you write a song called ‘Modern Art’ about being thrown out of art galleries and you get your fans to handpaint each individual 7” sleeve. Fierce Panda released it as a single, and it was one of the biggest selling ever. Lots of people liked it. By this time even their crazy dream of having Art Brut franchise bands was becoming a reality. NME saw them play at the single launch party for ‘Modern Art’ they remarked “Art Brut 17 are at the bar, Art Brut 4 are scuttling around the Barfly throwing pink paint about…Art Brut 138 are hiding in the corner”.

By the end of 2004 the band’s singles had found their way into many end of year polls including NME, Playlouder, John Peel’s Festive 50, ‘Formed A Band’ was even No 8 in Blender’s Top 100 Tracks of 2004. Eddie Argos had made an unlikely entrant in NME’s Cool List and the band were selling out venues the length and breadth of the country. After spending the first part of the new year in the studio with John Fortiss recording this album the band now find themselves in a position where Art Brut franchise bands are contributing b-sides to their new single ‘Emily Kane’ (May 2nd). Lots of people think they are still joking, they still might be, but Israel And Palestine are certainly getting on a lot better, though admittedly that might not be down to them.

Candy Bars to release debut album on New Granada Records on May 16, 2006!

Tampa, FL—March 27, 2006—Candy Bars, a “heavy baroque pop” trio from Tampa, Florida, is scheduled to release its debut album, the enigmatically titled On Cutting Ti-Gers in Half and Understanding Narravation, on the Tampa label New Granada Records (Isobella, Pohgoh).  As unclassifiable as its title, the album brings to mind an amalgam of Sparklehorse, Mark Mothersbaugh, Jeremy Enigk, Tindersticks, and Leonard Cohen, and is at once rueful and uniquely lovely.

What began in 2003 as two music store employees’ response to the metal-laden alternate dimension known as Tampa, FL developed into a trio that explores the more symphonic end of the pop spectrum—a sound that the members have dubbed “incidental heroin pop.”  While it should be noted that the members are not themselves heroin users, upon listening to On Cutting Ti-Gers in Half and Understanding Narravation, one can easily understand how such a description becomes apropos.

During the Summer of 2005, Candy Bars members Daniel Martinez, Ryan Hastings, and Melissa Castellano re-visited and re-recorded the best songs from previous demos, resulting in their debut full length, “On Cutting Ti-Gers in Half and Understanding Narravation” (available from Tampa’s own New Granada Records).  All of the songs on the album, musically and lyrically, engender in the listener a sense of delightful confusion and profound desperation.  Where Candy Bars deviates from the slew of unremarkable “dark, orchestral pop” acts that have emerged in recent years is in its ability to capture such weighty sentiments in true pop format, complete with singable (though sufficiently complex) verses and tasty hooks.

"…Candy Bars, an amazing sort-of-Tampa-based trio, has made a sophisticated dream-pop album that completely lives up to its potential…accomplished, eccentric, wholly mesmerizing pop music." - Scott Harrell, The Weekly Planet

Candy Bars is inarguably one of the most inventive, unique bands to ever emerge from The Sunshine State--the region of the country best known for the uninspired, rectangular meanderings of bands such as Creed and Limp Bizkit and Sister Hazel.  But the anomalous emergence of such creativity from an otherwise vapid location becomes relatively unimportant in the face of the most interesting aspect of the band—quite simply, Candy Bars write and record incredibly good songs.

Mbconn

PSYCHEDELIC NOISE ROCK ARTIST RELEASES DEBUT CD

March 27, 2006 (Chicago, IL) -- Mbconn, a psychedelic noise rock artist from Chicago, IL, will release his debut album "From Black To Purple" on April 4. The CD contains 10 songs and a 17 minute hidden track - 78 minutes worth of music, sounding like nothing on the radio. "Yeah, it may be a hard listen at first, but that's what I wanted," Mbconn says. "I wanted something with musical resonance, and I think I succeeded. I could've been like most bands and written four minute pop rock, but that's too easy and gets old real quick."

Mbconn's road to where he stands musically today has been long and winding indeed. When Guns'n'Roses released their double album "Use Your Illusions", Mbconn had just started the 8th grade and quite obviously, that record was extremely cool at the time. "By the end of the 8th grade, there was a huge culture shift, and Nirvana had made them look stupid," Mbconn laughs in retrospective. "And though I still appreciate some Guns'n'Roses, I am grateful for Nirvana happening, not only for the music, but because I got to see how one era can be destroyed by another."

Speaking of destruction - in cultural terms of course - Kurt Cobain soon made the leap, and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam did his best not to be seen or heard. "This led to a constant imitation of grunge bands on the radio and almost every band who got airplay not only sounded, but also felt like shit," Mbconn sighs. On the other hand, this is where synchronicity stepped in. "One of my best friends was in some advanced art class with an older student who played bass in some weird psychedelic band. He sees a CD, with a weird plastic cover and asks, 'What's that?' It turned out to be 'Pure Phase' by Spiritualized, with a plastic cover which glowed in the dark. When my friend asked him, 'Why does it glow in the dark?', this guy could only say, 'Because when it's dark and you can't see anything, you can find Spiritualized.' Oddly enough, this coincided with the time when I began doing psychedelics."

Later, after Mbconn moved to Chicago and went to college, all those Sonic Youth albums he bought began to make sense. Then "OK Computer" by Radiohead came out in June, and once again shifted the music scene. After scoring a screenplay someone had left behind in a bar, spending years trying to start a band and not being able to find the right musicians, Mbconn decided to just record the album himself. "It took about a year, but was worth it," he concludes, "Most people hear the album and think a band recorded it, even though it was just me. Not many people do that. Nor do many bands release albums over an hour."

Gnarls Barkley

Confound it -- what IS Gnarls?

By Chris Lee

Special to The Times

They're a hip-hop Mutt and Jeff: one tall and lanky with a kinky red Afro and a tendency to devote earnest thought to even the most lighthearted matters; the other a short, bald, rotund guy who peppers his conversation with arcane mythological and spiritual references.

But already the musicians collaborating under the jokey name Gnarls Barkley — Grammy-nominated producer Danger Mouse and soul dynamo Cee-Lo Green — are being eyeballed as one of the year's most intriguing new arrivals.

Neither is a household name, but their musical bona fides are impeccable. In 2004, Danger Mouse (real name: Brian Burton) created a "mash-up" of the Beatles' so-called White Album and rapper Jay-Z's "The Black Album." Calling it "The Grey Album," that marriage of disparate genres became a watershed event in hip-hop. As a result, Burton was tapped to produce the conceptual rock-dub band Gorillaz's second album, "Demon Days," for which he received a Grammy nomination.

Green — real name Thomas DeCarlo Callaway — was a high school classmate of OutKast's Andre 3000 and Big Boi, and his vocal approach is credited with precipitating Andre 3000's shift away from rapping to take hip-hop in a new direction with his own singing.

Gnarls Barkley's infectious lead single "Crazy" — on which Cee-Lo channels Al Green's falsetto and Sam Cooke's pitch control atop an analog hip-hop groove — stormed Britain this week, coming in at No. 1 at the Apple iTunes UK Music Store.

Even with the release of their highly anticipated debut album, "St. Elsewhere," still seven weeks away, they have not only confounded music critics trying to classify their alterna-hip-hop sound, they have confounded themselves.

So Burton and Callaway agree to disagree about where their music fits. "It's so cliché to say that it's not classifiable or 'It's like nothing else,' " said Los Angeles native Burton. "I think it's more of a rock record but with hip-hop's underlying spirit. An alternative to R&B."

"It's funk," said Callaway, a founding member of the Atlanta rap quartet Goodie Mob. "A lot of my music is centered in a place where I want to be pleasing in the sight of my maker. But it's not formal gospel. Gospel is at funk's center. And it's vintage soul because I'm an old soul."

They are hardly alone in their inability to categorize Gnarls' singular blend of styles. It mines — but isn't limited to — '60s psychedelia, throbbing Miami-bass, Motown music, trip-hop and hot buttered soul; the record Marvin Gaye might have made he had come of age in an era of digital samplers.

At least six of "St. Elsewhere's" tracks hit file-sharing websites four months ago and have gone on to become the passion of music bloggers.

Gnarls Barkley is slated for a prestigious public debut May 1 at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, and the duo has been added to Lollapalooza 2006 in Chicago in August.

The two came together to record a remix for Burton's "Ghetto Pop Life" album but began collaborating as a kind of proto-Gnarls in mid-2003. They recorded batches of songs at Callaway's Atlanta studio even though the prospect of a record deal was far off.

"We took an independent approach, funding the sessions out of our own pockets," said Callaway, seated in the lobby of Santa Monica's Viceroy Hotel. "This album has no predecessor; there's nothing to ensure it's going to work in any genre or market. But we weren't taking ourselves too seriously. It's a very organic, honest record."

When their schedules prevented them from getting together, the band mates worked separately, then e-mailed each other. The absence of physical proximity often resulted in some outré lyrical content. Callaway sings about necrophilia, feng shui, the TV cartoon "Transformers" and he even apes the Violent Femmes' angst-art-rock classic, "Gone Daddy Gone."

"Impressed as I was with [Burton's] production and ideas for the record, I wanted to shock and surprise him as well," Callaway said. They eventually signed with Downtown/Atlantic Records and have already begun work on a second Gnarls album.

"I want to get another record done, hopefully before this one gets too big," Burton said. "I don't want to worry about what the public will want to hear next."

As for the group's name — a hip-hop-ization of former NBA star Charles Barkley — suffice to say it's equal parts declaration of purpose and goofy humor.

"We were looking for a name that sounds like its own genre," Burton said, seated near a mixing board at a Burbank recording studio where he was producing tracks for New York dancerock group the Rapture. "A perfect example is when I heard of [electronica musician] Aphex Twin. It could describe a sound. And there was just something familiar about Gnarls Barkley."

 HOT CHIP

 The Warning

 June 13, 2006

Hot Chip will release their magnificent new album The Warning, on June 13, 2006 on DFA/Astralwerks.  It’s a bold statement of intent that will show people the true nature of Hot Chip, and allow them to rightfully assume their position in the spotlight they deserve.

The Warning follows on the heels of “Over & Over”, perhaps Hot Chip’s most immediate and monstrous single to date, delivering a sly dig to those who heard them as too ‘chilled out’ first time round. The combination of Joe’s lolloping and infectious beat and Alexis’s delivery of lyrics; “Laid back? We’ll give you laid back!”, this wry sardonic repose offers both an indication as to their immaculately layered pop voyeurism, while simultaneously driving the point home with the remorseless, relentless repetition we know and love.

Hot Chip’s debut album Coming on Strong was released last Fall to great critical acclaim with Spin declaring it- “Electrified soul for your inner rapper”, Blender proclaiming that it’s “Insidiously melodic and, in its subdued way, genuinely soulful, it’s the best record of its ilk since the Streets’ debut”, and Pitchfork rating it an ‘8’.

Hot Chip are: Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard, Al Doyle, Owen Clarke, & Felix Martin

SMALL SINS

 Small Sins

 June 13, 2006

Astralwerks will release Toronto based artist Small Sins (formerly known in Canada as The Ladies And Gentlemen) self-titled album on May 30, 2006.

Thomas D’Arcy—the solo mastermind behind Small Sins, marches to the beat of his own drum machine. That’s what he discovered after spending the better chunk of a decade in bands percolating around the indie-rock scene of his Canada hometown. By Christmas 2004, D’Arcy found his band broken up and himself in the midst of a “mid-twenties crisis.” “I was really questioning what I was doing with my life,” D’Arcy says. “Why am I in this band I don’t love? Why am I not making music that I do love? I was thinking back to how things used to be, when it was pure spirit and fun. Music had become work, yet I still felt like I should be getting to work on something.”

And get to work he did. D’Arcy retreated alone to the basement of his childhood home: armed with little more than a Roland 707 drum machine, a clutch of vintage Moog keyboards, and a sixteen-track recorder, he was determined to create sounds that reflected the passion that led him to music in the first place. After nearly a year of woodshedding, D’Arcy fulfilled his goal, emerging with Small Sins. A masterpiece of heartfelt electro chamber-pop, Small Sins bubbles with gorgeously layered harmonies, synth gurgles, and hook-filled tales of love lost and found as honest and bracing as the Canadian winter. Despite its intensely personal nature, Small Sins became D’Arcy’s most well-received musical venture yet. Boompa Records, a Vancouver-based independent label, released Small Sins to critical acclaim across Canada. The buzz became even more prevalent after a sold-out Boompa Records label showcase at Austin’s SXSW music festival, where Small Sins (a.k.a. The Ladies & Gentlemen) were one of their showcasing artists. Astralwerks then signed D’Arcy under the Small Sins moniker in 2005.

“A brilliant collection of sweet, achingly addictive pop tunes that are at once soothing and upbeat, just as comfortable pounding out of a dance floor speaker as they are drifting out of the stereo next to your pillow ... one of this year's smartest and most endearing pop albums.”- Exclaim! (Canada)

PHOENIX

It's Never been Like That

 Release Date: May 23, 2006

When they say It’s Never Been Like That, they mean it. “This was about starting all over,” says Thomas Mars, Phoenix’s photogenic mouthpiece, stumbling across a cross fader in their Versailles studio, “it was about making ourselves scared again.” If there is precisely the kind of scrubbed-up freshness you might expect to hear on a particularly striking debut album to the four-strong Frenchmen’s third record, there is a reason for that. They attacked it as though they had never recorded together before. But there is no accounting for musical telepathy. Something gelled. It’s Never Been Like That? It’s never been sunnier, stronger, more coherent, thoughtful and alive. Welcome to the masterpiece that Phoenix have always threatened to make.

It’s Never Been Like That was conceived with a live mentality. If at first it sounds breezily, crazily immediate, that vigor should not detract from its deeper, more lasting residual air of a band at the peak of their powers, both musically and intellectually. There is little in the way of the studied air of its precursors.

RADIO 4

 Enemies Like This

 Release Date: May 16, 2006

It only takes a few seconds of "Enemies Like This," the title track to Radio 4’s new album, to realize that the Brooklyn-based band has returned with all cylinders fired up and with a rejuvenated sense of purpose: they’ve streamlined and stretched their sound, cut the fat, trimmed the filler, and focused on the meat that makes the music, not the spices that can bury it. Enemies Like This is the album long awaited by all those who know that, up to now, Radio 4’s strongest impression has been made from the stage.

Radio 4  set out its stall in 2000 with a low-budget debut indie album, The New Song And Dance; the follow-up, Gotham! (2002), produced by the DFA duo, found them  hitting musical stride in a post 9/11 milieu wherein new New York bands were the toast of a global indie-rock post-punk funk-off dance floor. Songs like "Save Our City," "Calling All Enthusiasts" and "Start A Fire" resonated way beyond the NYC borders, and the single "Dance To The Underground" became an international cross-over club classic. The trio expanded via percussion and keyboards for its third album (Stealing Of A Nation, 2004), from which the songs "Party Crashers," "State Of Alert"’ and "Absolute Affirmation" all served to further raise the group’s profile. Since then, the group have changed guitarists, signed to Astralwerks for the world, toured with The Libertines, Gang Of Four and The Raveonettes, and put in rousing festival appearances from Coachella in California to Homelands in Britain and Benicassim in Spain.

The group determined to keep the sound live when returning to the studio. Produced by Jagz Kooner, known for his radical mixes for Primal Scream, Kasabian, Soulwax and others, Enemies Like This is ten songs and 43 minutes long – like albums used to be back when they were spread over two sides of vinyl and there was no space to bury your mistakes. As much as these ten songs are devoid of filler, they’re also thrillingly diverse. Radio 4 are proud of the scene from which they emerged, but with Enemies Like This, they’ve become very much their own entity.

CANDI STATION

 His Hands

 Release Date: April 4, 2006

There are southern soul voices and there are southern soul voices. Raw and ravaged, Candi Staton’s is one of the signature sounds of the genre. It’s a voice with a tear in it, the cry of a woman wounded by life, by men, by woes turned inwards. On her new album His Hands for Honest Jons/Astralwerks, it’s also the voice of a gospel singer returning to the music that first made her name: the country soul songs presented by the same labels on the 2004 compilation Candi Staton, twenty-six tracks of Muscle Shoals magic.

For those who regard Candi’s Muscle Shoals recordings as a high-watermark of country soul, her return to the secular side comes as a blessed relief. Two decades plus of spreading the Word through her Beracah ministry led many to assume she would never again sing songs of love and pain – let alone record songs written by Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Charlie Rich and even Will “Bonnie Prince Billy” Oldham.

WILLY MASON

TOUR DATES WITH THE MAGIC NUMBERS!

“This youth is about to inherit the earth” – NME

“Equal parts hobo and Holden Caulfield, (then) nineteen-year-old Willy Mason blends precocious lyricism, spare, jangly guitar, and a world-weary voice that sounds older than his years.”

-Rolling Stone

It's hard to talk about Martha's Vineyard native Willy Mason and not mention his tender years. After all, this 20-year-old has been knocking out melancholy-strewn classics since starting high school.  But that’s exactly the point with Willy– his youth is part and parcel of his voice, his message and his muse.  Willy’s music resonates no matter what your age– but most importantly, he’s singing a message to kids of his own generation– and they seem to be listening. ept steady by his 15-year-old brother Sam Mason on drums, Willy’s debut album Where The Humans Eat was recorded in a house in Catskill, New York with Willy playing almost all the other instruments.  The songs were recorded mostly live in one take- with Willy singing and playing at the same time, and then each track mixed in around 15 minutes or so by engineer Tom Schick.

“There was no designated producer, nothing was planned out. It was just collaboration really between everyone who was in the studio including the dog and the rabbit that were there," Willy recalls. Dogs and rabbits aside, Where The Humans Eat is an album laden with depth and lyrical enigmas. Catch Willy on the road (with Sam possibly sitting in on drums if it’s not a school night).

Willy Mason remaining dates with Beth Orton:

SONDRE LERCHE – New Album & Live Dates!

 Duper Sessions

 Release Date: March 21, 2006

Still in his early twenties and with two impressive, critically acclaimed pop albums already to his credit, you might expect Sondre Lerche to launch into his third recording by adopting the same music-making credo. However, Lerche, has instead taken a slight departure before his third full-length album to record a one-off jazz inflected pop album entitled, Duper Sessions.

The ebullient Norwegian singer-songwriter-guitarist-bandleader, who toured the US last year with Elvis Costello and appeared on The Late Show With Conan O'Brien, has taken a new approach on Duper Sessions, which features his longtime trio, The Faces Down, augmented by pianist Erik Halvorsen. Instead of exploring complex arrangements and hip production like he did on Faces Down (2002) and Two Way Monologue (2004), Lerche decided to take a batch of new songs into the studio and, as he describes the experience, "just play and not think too much." The result? A fresh, back-to-basics collection of pop tunes with indelible melodies and smart lyrics that are rendered in a soft-and at times buoyant-romantic and jazz-infused sensibility.  Inspired by Chet Baker, Caetano Veloso and even David Lynch, Duper Sessions transports the listener into a different time and place, filled with melody and romanticism.

Sondre Lerche w/ The Faces Down Quartet:

4/6      New York, NY           Bowery Ballroom

 4/9      Los Angeles, CA        Troubadour

PLACEBO

 Meds

 Release Date: April 4, 2006

Over the past decade Placebo have slowly but surely grown into one of the biggest and best rock bands on the globe. Meds is Placebo’s first studio album since 2003’s Sleeping With Ghosts, which went Top 10 in the UK, sold 1.4 million copies worldwide and firmly re-established the band's foothold in the USA. In that time Placebo have gone from strength to strength selling out arena dates all over the world and playing to a sold-out Wembley Arena to celebrate the release of their Singles Collection, Once More With Feeling.

Recorded over an eight week period at London’s RAK Studios, Meds marks the return of a very confident band who after 10 years together keep growing in stature. For this album the band returned to their roots, stripped away the layers and got to the heart of their songwriting smarts. This they’ve achieved with the help of producer Dimitri Tikovoi and legendary mixer, Flood (U2 & Smashing Pumpkins).

The result is not just a molten, souped-up raw roar of a record, but also Placebo’s most human collection to date. Here are tales of fragile souls freaking out because they’ve forgotten to take their medication ("Meds", which features VV of The Kills), of the bleary-eyed shame of the bathroom mirror in a narcotic comedown dawn ("Cold Light Of Morning"), of “your friends who are making extremely bad lifestyle choices” ("Song To Say Goodbye"), a beautiful, thoughtful ballad ("Follow The Cops Back Home"), and mysterious, haunting songs ("Space Monkey").”  Not to mention the break-up anthem “Broken Promise” featuring Brian dueting with none other than Michael Stipe. Here are stories - subtly unfolded - of loss, confusion, revenge, love, addiction and dependence. www.placebo.co.uk/player/

ATHLETE

TO SUPPORT

SWITCHFOOT

ON TOUR IN MARCH!

2005 was a banner year for Athlete. The London quartet had a UK number 1 platinum album with their latest release Tourist. They sold out their own US headlining tours, as well as supporting U2 in the UK and Europe and Snow Patrol in the US. Their infectious single “Half Light” is currently heating up Modern Rock radio.

With Tourist, the band wanted to push themselves further than they did on their debut Vehicles And Animals. They sought to balance a grand sound with a more personal lyrical intimacy. The resulting album is bursting with glorious guitar-pop hooks, and packs a solid, emotional punch right from the start.

THE DFA REMIXES

Chapter One

Release Date: April 4, 2006

The DFA (Tim Goldsworthy & James Murphy) return with the first installment of their remix compendium; The DFA Remixes – Chapter One. It is comprised of some of the many remixes that helped establish them as one of the most innovative, unique and in-demand production teams in the world – Yes it has been well documented that Janet Jackson and Britney and a whole bunch of others called, but the duo have resolutely resisted and cherry picked their productions, mixes and collaborations helping retain their relevance, influence and dominance in the ever changing world of contemporary music. Witness the DFA sound with fine aplomb, with their highly sort after interpolations of Le Tigre, Blues Explosion, The Chemical Brothers, Soulwax, Radio 4, Fischerspooner, Gorillaz, Metro Area and their recent remix of US label mates Hot Chip. This will be followed by Chapter Two later this summer (set to include their take on the likes of Goldfrapp, Nine Inch Nails & N.E.R.D. amongst others).).

2005 was a breakout year for the DFA which saw their label of the same name step out of the shadow of their production efforts and come into its own, with the release of massively acclaimed debut albums from LCD Soundsystem, Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom and The Juan Maclean, alongside the third Black Dice full length – Broken Ear Record, their second label compilation, and their now deleted and much loved low-price DFA Holiday Mix.

THE JUAN MACLEAN

LIVE AT M3,WMC and Coachella

Hot on the heels of a series of DFA dancefloor funk twelve inches, comes The Juan Maclean's Less Than Human, a worldwide debut released last year on DFA/Astralwerks. This former member of Six Finger Satellite aligns metallic synths, cowbells, samplers and even "robot stuff" (e.g. 'Shining Skinned Friend' & overall glimmering dynamics), which pass from one state to another.

Less Than Human, recorded at Juan's home and Plantain Studios, was mixed and produced by the DFA and Juan Maclean. Its a precision-tuned rekindling of Maclean's love affair with everything from Kraftwerk to Juan Atkins and Derrick May, Funkadelic to Giorgio Moroder and Lipps Inc, DAF to Talking Heads and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. The paranoia of Less Than Human is a must listen for any fan of the obscure originality that the DFA always deliver with utter grace. Experience it live in a city near you...

Dirty On Purpose

Debut LP "Hallelujah Sirens”

Out On North Street Records / June 13th

PITCHFORK MEDIA -  “ squeaky-clean and tight twee-pop outfit that betrays traces of Yo La Tengo, Sigur Rós, and Belle & Sebastian while managing to keep a cheeky, wide-eyed tone of its own...And considering the  buzz they've already generated throughout the big bad city, these five tracks  had better be a melodically delightful sampling of those to come."

After the buzz of their Sleep Late For a Better Tomorrow EP, Dirty on Purpose will release their much-anticipated debut full length, Hallelujah Sirens, on North Street Records in May 2006.

Often described as ethereal and emotional space-rock, Dirty on Purpose, a four-piece from Brooklyn, NY, beautifully combine sonic washes of noise with delicate, pretty harmonies. Hallelujah Sirens features 10 brand new, rich and diverse songs that span from upbeat tracks like “No Radio” and “Monument” to songs that build up slowly and explode with intensity like “Always Looking” and “Fake Lakes.”

With four songwriters and three main vocalists contributing to the group’s overall sound, Dirty on Purpose create music that is wholly original, while paying tribute to their shoegazer, noise and pop influences. Though the journey has been slow and steady, the reward has been tremendous – reaching and realizing their very own musical landscape. Doug Marvin, Joseph Jurewicz, George Wilson and DJ Boudreau are the conductors of their own orchestra, and Hallelujah Sirens is their latest opus.

Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Jaymay contributed female vocals to a number of tracks on Hallelujah Sirens, including “Light Pollution,” “Kill Our City,” and “Marfa Lights.” Her beautiful harmonies enrich the songs with finesse and charm.

For songs like “No Radio,” the band also pulled in a horns section complete with a trombone, saxophone and trumpet to give the robust track that extra added bit of excitement. Other tracks like “Lake Effect” and “Your Summer Dress” called for a strings section of viola and cello. Anne Brewster, formerly of Sea Ray, contributed on cello.

The band will set out on a national tour in Summer 2006 to support their new album. This is a band that has steadily built up a following around the world, giving them time to develop and expand as musicians and gel as a band. They aim to keep their career long and prolific. Keep an eye out for them, and see them grow and mature, carving out their own little niche in musical history.

 Doug Marvin – drums, vocals

 Joseph Jurewicz – guitar, vocals

 George Wilson – guitar, vocals

 DJ Boudreau – bass

SPY

RELEASES UNIQUE ALBUM OFFERINGS

Album Available On White Vinyl And Via Free Download

The four-piece, Atlanta-based SPY have opted to go both covert and widespread.  Witness their release plans for their self-titled album, which is currently available for sale at select cool record stores (on white vinyl no less) -- pretty covert in the not-many-turntables-around-anymore world of today), pressed and released by their own label, Deathray Records.  And then they went the widespread route by turning around and releasing the album on their website, for anyone to download.  For free.  This makes SPY part of a growing trend of bands (others doing this recently include Arctic Monkeys, Harvey Danger, The Chemical Brothers, Bravecaptain, and the GoKart Records label) who are putting their music out there online for folks to snap up at no cost, with the thought that people who love their music will spread the word about them in an organic, grass-roots manner.

SPY, who take their name from the now-defunct Spy magazine, have already been lauded by their hometown weekly, Creative Loafing, who placed the band on their year-end, best-of-2005 list.   Last October, the band was “discovered” by influential Los Angeles DJ, Jonathon L, now broadcasting out of Phoenix,  Arizona.  Jonathon spun the track “Underground” on his weekly show, “Lopsided World of L,” for several consecutive weeks at the end of 2005 and declared the band one of his top five new groups.  They’ve also been getting spins on XM Satellite Radio’s Unsigned channel.

In keeping with their somewhat mysterious mien, the band has, until now, eschewed promotion of any type.  But when someone like Steve Albini (Nirvana, PJ Harvey), who produced the record, gives his stamp of approval to a virtually unknown band by agreeing to work with them, the music has to be good and should be heard widely. SPY recorded “SPY” on two-inch tape at Albini’s Chicago studio, Electrical Audio, and Sean Magee at Abbey Road in London provided his mastering expertise.  The result is one that band is reticent to mention comparisons for; however, it could be described thusly:  if Brian May and David Bowie had formed a band with Keith Moon as the drummer... Or maybe Iggy Pop and the Stooges would be more appropriate. The aforementioned Creative Loafing compared frontman Chad Etchison to both Iggy and James Brown in the stage demeanor category.  They also opined:  “Etchison’s Bowie-esque croon sits atop SPY’s crunchy, post-punk guitar within supple, moody arrangements that recall Imperial Teen at times.”

SPY is Chad Etchison (vocals), Mark Skinner (guitar), Cary Brown (bass), and Jon Skinner (drums).  They can be found online at:

REGINA CARTER

TO RELEASE I'LL BE SEEING YOU: A SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

New Verve recording from acclaimed violinist is

tribute to her late mother

On Tuesday, June 13, 2006, violinist Regina Carter will release I'll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey.  The album is a tribute to her late mother, Grace Carter, one of the primary influences in her life, music, and career.

The repertoire features a range of titles dating mostly from the 1920s through the 1940s. The album includes tunes by Rodgers and Hart and Duke Ellington, as well as a tender new waltz-ballad by Carter. The classics on the album were some of Carter's mother's favorite songs. With effervescent arrangements featuring dare-devilishly spontaneous improvisations and interplay between Carter and her bandmates, I'll Be Seeing You is a feel-good foray into the joys of small-group swing and classic mid-century songs.

For this album, Carter is joined by Xavier Davis on piano, Matthew Parrish on bass, and Alvester Garnett on drums, and her special guests are vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater and Carla Cook, Paquito D'Rivera on clarinet, and Gil Goldstein on accordion.

I'll Be Seeing You instantly captivates from the album's opener, "Anitra's Dance", by classical composer Edvard Grieg, in which Carter and her violin swing mightily, in the footsteps of The John Kirby Orchestra's 1939 small-group jazz version.  The brilliant unison interplay of Carter's violin, Gil Goldstein's accordion, and Paquito D'Rivera's clarinet vividly establishes the album's period feeling.  This line-up continues in a high-octane "Little Brown Jug", featuring more dazzling passages and playful solos from the three.  Throughout the album, Carter's stand-out rhythm section is unfailingly inventive, nuanced and hard-swinging.

The irrepressible Dee Dee Bridgewater, arguably the greatest exponent of scat singing today, is featured on a rollicking time-capsule vocal on the Yiddish tune that became an Andrews Sisters hit, "Bei Mir Bist Du Shöen," with a break-neck arrangement by the album's producer John Clayton showcasing virtuoso playing from Carter, Goldtstein, and D'Rivera .  Bridgewater also performs the Rodgers and Hart gem "This Can't Be Love", and scats in exuberant call-and-response to the band.

Carter's fellow-Detroiter, Carla Cook, one of the today's most accomplished jazz vocalists, turns in stand-out performances on "You Took Advantage of Me", the W.C. Handy classic "St. Louis Blues", and an elegant "There's a Small Hotel."

Carter has been hailed by The Wall Street Journal as "one of jazz's most impressive musicians [with] dazzling solos [and] an impressive and diverse resume".  The Los Angeles Times called her soloing "extraordinary, bursting with joyous swing" and DownBeat asserted "you can hear the inspired passion in her virtuosity". This has never been more true than on I'll Be Seeing You as Carter scales new heights of spontaneity and creative soloing. The CD includes the Ella Fitzgerald standard "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" and a beautiful Duke Ellington ballad, "Blue Rose" (composed for Rosemary Clooney), as well as a haunting arrangement of "Sentimental Journey" for violin, bass, and clarinet. The album closes with a passionately tender "I'll Be Seeing You" in a dream-like arrangement by Gil Goldstein.

On her previous recording, Paganini: After a Dream, Carter made history as the first jazz violinist ever to play and record on Paganini's historic Guarneri del Gesu violin, receiving accolades for her effortless melding of classical and jazz idioms. In remembering her mother, Regina Carter recalls, with unfettered swing and virtuoso abandon, the joys of a classic era in American music.

I'll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey available on CD June 13,

2006.

KLUTAE

"HIT'N'RUN LIMITED"

 $32 CAD / $28 USD

2005 was highlighted by the detonating and successful come-back of Claus Larsen with his LEAETHER STRIP main band project, now we are please to announce that 2006 will mark the return of his side-project KLUTAE, through which the Danish master of electro/industrial expresses his most extravagant torments and fantasies. Claus Larsen launched this solo-project in the early 90's under the name KLUTE, but changed its spelling to KLUTAE in order to avoid any further confusion with a totally unrelated drum n' bass project.

KLUTAE's first releases showcased a rather heavy and turbo-driven guitar-oriented sound which brought him comparisons to metal-industrial acts like FEAR FACTORY, BILE and SWAMP TERRORISTS, yet Claus Larsen has always considered this project as his most eclectic and unpredictable outlet. So it was no major surprise seeing its hardest walls of synthesised guitar noise eventually giving way to mid-tempo pounding tracks powered by the LEAETHER STRIP trademark EBM bass-lines and Claus' chameleon vocals. In fact, KLUTAE traditionally stands for a more punkish "in ya face attitude" with tongue-in-cheek lyrics and "angst-til-ya-bust" old-school elektro arrangements. And it's with that very characteristic sense of humour that Claus Larsen invites us now on another extravaganza journey through desert storms, biker orgies, hell fires, death valley saloons and other sexy parties with fat faggots in leather jackets. KLUTAE is loud and fun, and will musically certainly not deceive the LEAETHER STRIP fanbase, while keeping its appeal to followers of the MINISTRY gang for its aggressive attitude. It's dense aggro-electro from the tortured soul of Claus Larsen's bastard alter ego. Released on Alfa Matrix and available April 28th, 2006.

CODE 64

"DEPARTURE LIMITED"

 $25 CAD / $21.50 USD

Rising electro-pop stars Code 64 started their career with the release of the much acclaimed "Storm" album on the Norwegian label Angel Productions. The album made it all the way to the top of the Nordic Alternative Chart and was supported by the electrifying dancefloor single "Without You". "Storm" presented crystal clear, melodic and danceable futurepop, a genre the band have developed further on their new album "Departure", released by the Swedish Memento Materia label in April. "Departure" have been preceded by two singles - "Leaving Earth" and "Sea of Stars". Two singles with which the band shows their electropop muscles - danceable beats, vivid, melodic soundscapes and strong, catchy refrains. "Departure" presents a total of 11 new songs, from more laid-back tunes like "Carry Me Home", together with more hard hitting, club anthems such as "Leaving Earth" and "Run to you". Code 64 have developed their own recognizable synthpop sound even further than their debut and fans will recognize the personal lyrics and their typical electronic arrangements. All in all a very strong album that continues the electropop story started with "Storm". This limited version of Departure (200 copies only!!) comes in metal box and includes an autographed artist photo, stickers, and a badge. Released on Memento Materia and available May 9th, 2006.

EMINENCE OF DARKNESS

"DISPLACE THE TRACE"

 $23 CAD / $20 USD

German quartet Eminence of Darkness does not give much on current trends and styles and rather goes about cooking up its own tasty stew made up of exquisite ingredients: a blend of wave guitar reminding of The Cure, driving electronics as in Depeche Mode or Blutengel and the one or other Alternative-Rock- and Metal-riff… spiced up with a distinct note of the classic Eighties sound. What at first glimpse might seem like a rather chaotic stylistic mixture gels together extremely well to a hit-laden cornucopia of addictive tunes. The Dark-Wave-elements are significantly beefed-up by setting them against an electronic background, while the bursts of hard guitar provide intense dynamic peaks, and the light Eighties touch gives a bit of melodic relief. Front man Lars is very effective at building up tension with his extravagant but all the more emotional style of singing that brings to mind Brian Molko of Placebo, while second singer, keyboarder and occasional guitarist Juliane sets an interesting counterpoint with her dark and voluminous Siouxsie-style vocals. The musical atmosphere that results from bringing together these diverse voices and elements creates a unique album experience that is both intense and fun: music for your heart, limbs and brains that will appeal to such diverse audiences as fans of Terminal Choice, Placebo, The Birthday Massacre or recent Apoptygma Berzerk. "Displace the trace" is bound to captivate anyone who is into songs that have got both zest and atmosphere and successfully adapts the Eighties feeling for the new millennium! Released on Fear Section and available April 18th, 2006.

GARY NUMAN

"JAGGED"

 $18 CAD / $15.50 USD

SHIPPING NOW!! One of the biggest announcements made by Metropolis Records for 2006 was the signing of electronic pop pioneer Gary Numan. The first release on his new North American home will be Jagged, his first studio album in over five years. Co-produced with underground electronic artist DJ Ade Fenton (best known for his Advanced Records label), Jagged is an aggressive, forward-looking album which takes the best elements of his previous work and gives them an anthemic, contemporary twist. Jagged is one of the darkest and most electronic albums of his career, re-wiring the apocalyptic synthesizer pop of Numan's own "Down In The Park" into something equally unique and powerful. Like his best albums it gets to the essence of Numan's appeal - vocals that are alienated yet strangely soulful; a desire to push technology as far as he can and atmospheric sounds lashed to power chords and dream-like melodies. Numan also mixes rock elements into the album through the massive anthemic choruses, especially on "Fold," "Haunted," and "In A Dark Place" - but they're given a new potency through the siren-like wail of machines rather than guitars. Fans of Numan's more electronic-based songwriting will no doubt love the icy synthesizer hooks of standout tracks like "Pressure," "Blind" and the experimentalism "Jagged" with the title track's powerful synthesis of aggression and beauty conjured up out of machine-made noises and effects. At a time when nearly all of his contemporaries have either disappeared or compromised to the point where they've lost their identity, Numan has pulled off an album which is heavy and dark, yet it also contains some of his finest songwriting. Released on Metropolis Records.

KLUTAE

"SINNER"

 $13 CAD / $11.25 USD

SHIPPING NOW!! Claus Larsen launched this solo-project in the early 90's under the name KLUTE, but changed its spelling to KLUTÆ in order to avoid any further confusion with a totally unrelated drum n' bass project. And it's with that very characteristic sense of humour that Claus Larsen invites us now on another extravaganza journey through desert storms, hell fires and other sexy parties with fat faggots in leather jackets.

Before the release of the new album "Hit'n'Run", Claus Larsen will wet your appetite for more with his new teasing "Sinner" EP holding 6 non-album club mixes. 6 frontal floor-filler tracks you will sing along in no time. Melodic aggressive power at its best! "We are sinners and we will all burn in Hell – lalalalaaalala". Released on Alfa Matrix.

INURE

"SUBVERSIVE"

$20 CAD / $17.50 USD

SHIPPING NOW!! INURE was formed in the Summer of 1999, shortly after its founding members Adam Moore and Robert Vogel arrived in Los Angeles. With similar musical influences and tastes in production, the duo sought out to create a sound reminiscent of the "golden era" of industrial dance music, injected with their unique and updated ideas of where they'd like to hear the genre move. With Adam's formal training in Audio Production at the Art Institute of Seattle, and Rob's lengthy programming and musical experience, the two easily began sculpting what became their debut album, "Seemless". Layered with heavy beats, driving basslines, and thick atmospheres, INURE managed to capture exactly what they were looking for – the depth and feel of classic industrial, with forward-thinking production and sound design. After the collapse of their label (Dying Culture) the duo continued performing live shows and officially welcomed Sam P. (PULSE LEGION, IMPERATIVE REACTION) as a permanent 3rd member of INURE. Released on Alfa Matrix.

Gang Starr Affiliate

Smiley The Ghetto Child

Presents The Antidote on 5-2-06

NY,  NY---- Born in Harlem and raised in New York City's toughest neighborhood (The Bronx), Smiley The Ghetto Child's history runs deep. Some of Smiley's early milestones included ghost-writing for both Black Sheep and Chi Ali.  Smiley later went on to hook up with his cousin Melachi The Nutcracker and helped orchestrate Group Home's classic Hiphop album Livin Proof, which was entirely produced by the legendary DJ Premier of Gang Starr.  Smiley was featured on "The Realness", which many viewed as a standout track from the LP. A music video was scheduled to be shot for “The Realness,” which Smiley was supposed to play a major part in, but during that period Smiley caught a case and was locked up due to "extra curricular activities.”  This unfortunate intermission stopped what could have been a promising career for Smiley during the golden age of Hip Hop.   With that past in his rear-view mirror, Smiley The Ghetto Child will make up for lost time on 5-2-06 with the release of his debut LP—The Antidote!

A shade under a decade later, Smiley triumphantly returned when he hooked back up with his Gang Starr affiliates, by appearing on (“Werdz From The Ghetto Child”) Gang Starr’s 2003 opus The Ownerz.  Re-embraced by his Gang Starr cohorts and the public, in 2005 Smiley released his DJ Premier produced single “The Wake Up Call,” which also featured production from Showbiz and Sebb (G-Unit & Infamous Mobb).  The vinyl only single went on to become Fat Beats best seller in 2005.  Later that year Smiley hit the road for two major tours; including the first 60  Dates on the "Weapons of MIC Destruction Tour" with Ghostface, Pharoahe Monch, M.O.P. and Cormega.   Smiley closed out 2005 by touring with Linkin Park and M.O.P.

With a fast growing fan base starving for a raw street record, Smiley The Ghetto Child offers up his debut, The Antidote, a spring cure all that is sure to be hailed on the block as a return to the “realness.”  Though the legendary WC of Westside Connection swings thru on “L.A.N.Y.”, Smiley goes against the grain and kept guest appearances to a minimum on his debut, preferring to let his own talents shine thru.  Smiley does reunite with DJ Premier on The Antidote, as Premier produces the “The Wake Up Call” and adds vocals too “Everything.” The Antidote also features production from Showbiz, Green Lantern and Sebb.

Some say Hiphop is sick, but on 5-2-06 Smiley The Ghetto Child proves he has The Antidote!

CONTINUED SUPPORT OF THE BAND EXCEEDS NATIONAL BOUNDARIES!

After a successful show in Japan, 3 are back in the states to tour with Yakuza.  Singer of 3, Joey states, “We’re very excited to reconnect with all our friends in the Midwest and beyond.  The band is all psyched up from our Japanese debut, (where we acquired some really cool samurai swords and trained to become ninjas) so basically, anything could happen at these shows.”

How’s the overall response to their latest album, Wake Pig?  Joey says, “Spirits are high for us right now.  Reaction to Wake Pig has been overwhelmingly positive the world over.  There’s nothing more inspiring than to see your art bridge oceans and connect distant cultures.  What we want to do now is showcase our live performance which is something that cannot truly encapsulated on CD.  To complete the picture, you’ve got to see us live…”

HALIFAX

INEVITABILITY

TAKES STRANGE WORLD BY STORM

WOODLAND HILLS CA, March 22, 2006 —Drive-Thru Records’ recording artist Halifax will release The Inevitability Of A Strange World on May 23, 2006. This is the band’s first full-length release.

Halifax has worked hard and patiently waited for The Inevitability Of A Strange World to hit the streets. "This record has been anticipated for some time now and we’re beyond excited! We’re bringing the rock, so everyone get ready!” says the band’s drummer, Tommy Guindon. The guitar slingers from Thousand Oaks, CA spent April ’05 in the studio with Lou Giordano (Taking Back Sunday, Sunny Day Real Estate) and recorded thirteen tracks. Giordano praised the band saying, “Halifax is one of the hardest working bands I’ve spent time with.” Delays in the release schedule allowed Halifax more time on the road to hone their skills and write new material and ultimately, the decision was made to go back into the studio and record more songs. With Machine (Armor for Sleep, Lamb Of God, Boys Night Out) at the controls, three more tracks were recorded and two of the original songs remixed. The result: a full-throttle rock n’ roll record! Listeners will fist-pump to the slick guitar work on tracks like “Anthem For Tonight” and “Under Fire” and swoon to gut-wrenching power ballads like “A Tint Of Rain.” “Our Revolution” is Inevitability’s first single with an accompanying video directed by Ahmi Manson that highlights Halifax’s love of the finer things in life. The song is a throw-back to 80’s era Mötley Crüe inspired rock n’ roll.

The Inevitability Of A Strange World is the follow-up to Halifax’s 2004 EP A Writer’s Reference, which sound-scanned over 33K copies. With over one million plays on Pure Volume, Halifax has toured the US from coast to coast, the UK, and Japan swooping up fans along the way. For some, the band’s introduction came by way of MTV’s The Real World Austin where Halifax had no problem adding to the cast’s merry mayhem swilling booze with the guys and romancing the ladies. Fans can see the band up close and personal this spring on tour with Bayside in May and June and on the Warped Tour in August.

Halifax was featured as one of the “Most Anticipated Albums of 2006” in the January 2006 issue of Alternative Press Magazine.

Take note, Halifax is bringing the ROCK.

Halifax features Mike Hunau on vocals, Chris Brandt on guitars and backing vocals, Adam Charles on guitar, Tommy Guindon on drums, and Doug Peyton on bass.

We’re reflecting the same ethos in the promotion of Bastards of Young.”

Throughout BASTARDS OF YOUNG, the bands and fans at the forefront of the “DIY” independent scene tell the story of how they built a following from basement gigs to arena shows, one fan-and one friend-at a time. The  DVD set is the first to ever document a music scene happening today that defies tradition and is making music history; this is the story of the Bastards of Young!

MVD AND BRINKDVD PARTNER TO BRING TV PARTY

AND OTHER EDGY MATERIALTO DVD

The Reigning Indie Music DVD Label and the ON THE BRINK Digital Culture Impresarios

Come Together to Bring the TV Party to Consumers on DVD

MVD, one of the leading producers of Music DVD, is joining forces with BrinkDVD to release a new line of DVDs that explore the margins of pop culture.  BrinkDVD produces arresting and entertaining audio visual artifacts worthy of any collection. If life is worth living, it is worth living on the brink. Those are words to fight about in any language.

In 1978, in New York City, two revolutionary trends emerged: public access cable TV and punk rock. Public access was about do-it-yourself television. Punk was about do-it-yourself music. These two phenomena were made for each other and they came together spectacularly in Glenn O’Brien’s TV Party. Billed as "The TV show that’s a cocktail party but which could be a political party," this public access hour brought an hour of the wildest of the wild to live television every week. Now more than 25 years later, BrinkDVD presents the documentary film TV Party, featuring footage from the original show and new interviews of the trend setting participants. BrinkDVD will also release many of the original episodes, beginning with the Premier Show which aired December 18, 1978.

In addition to the TV Party series,  BrinkDVD will offer many other interesting and off-beat titles. The first of which will be Pornstar Pets, a portrayal of unconditional love, for those who are striving for success and celebrity in a realm that is often viewed as de-humanizing. Through intimate interviews with some of the porn industries biggest stars telling us about their lesser known, but greatly beloved pets, we learn that loving your pet is one of the most human traits of all.

"This is MVD's first foray into TV on DVD, which by all reports is a vibrant sector," says Ed Seaman, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at MVD. "And this is the perfect content for us to launch with, considering our background and strength in early punk rock on DVD. BrinkDVD is a great new partner for us, we are anticipating a very strong launch and a great relationship."

BrinkDVD can trace its roots to the infamous user-driven high participation e-zine The Brink at www.brink.com. Users upload photos, films, music and essays in an "automatic magazine" format that was the brainchild of Internet Pioneer Danny Vinik, whose company Brink Media (see www.brinkmedia.com) has created some of the web's most dynamic web sites, including Kevin Spacey's filmmaker's community site triggerstreet.com, velvetrevolver.com, and coolcapitals.com (macromedia site of the day December, 2005)

In addition, Brink Media's sister company Brink Films (see www.brinkfilm.com) has produced some of the highest velocity indie fare of the last decade, films like Jonas Åkerlund's Spun and Harvey Wang's The Last New Yorker (currently in post- production).

In 2006, the Brinkmobiles (see  www.brinkmobile.com) will tour the country promoting BrinkDVD and also taking the pulse of the counter culture, making sure it still exists. If you want a Brinkmobile to visit your establishment, email comevisit@brinkmobile.com to get on the itinerary.

"BrinkDVD is a reaction to the limitations of the Indie film marketplace," says Vinik. "It’s a way to grab a hold of the energies of the emergent digital culture and take you to the brink of what's possible."

RADIOHEAD

PLAY LIVE IN THE UK IN MAY

A SELECTION OF NEW MATERIAL WILL BE DEBUTED ON THE TOUR.

EUROPEAN, AMERICAN AND CANADIAN DATES ARE ALSO CONFIRMED.

Radiohead will be touring the UK in May, playing a short series of theatre shows before heading off on an American and Canadian tour in June. The group then play some European dates before headlining the V Festival in Chelmsford and Stafford in August.

The tour will be the first opportunity to hear a selection of brand new material that the band has been working on in the studio. The group are still working on new songs and it is possible that they will release one as a download-only single.

The band said today: We're excited to be touring again, especially to play new songs to an audience. For the first time, we have no contract or release deadline to fulfil - it's both liberating and terrifying. To keep things more fun and spontaneous, we will be playing new songs that are work in progress. We will also be releasing music to download when we are excited about it, rather than wait months for a full-blown album release. Music's not just about all-time greats - it's also a document of its time, and we want to be able to put out a song when it feels right.

As previously announced, Thom and Jonny will headline a Friends of the Earth benefit show at Koko in London on May 1. This kicks off a period of live activity that will see the group play the UK, the US, Canada and Europe, culminating in their headline appearance on August 19th at the V Festival in Chelmsford and on August 20 at Stafford.

SERGIO MENDES,

will.i.am and ERYKAH BADU

GOT “THAT HEAT”

Thought you might want to check out the video for “That Heat” from SERGIO MENDES’ new album TIMELESS (see the streaming links below).  The song and video features ERYKAH BADU along with will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, who produced the record.  “That Heat”--an interpretation of “Slow Hot Wind” written by Henry Mancini--was a hit for SERGIO in 1966.  The track has been updated for 2006 with will.i.am and Erykah lending their vocal talents to SERGIO’s infectious Brazilian melodies.  The TIMELESS album, out now on Concord Records/Starbucks Hear Music, entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at #44 and was described by Interview magazine as “…a glorious excursion that’s timeless, indeed--and funky as all get out (March 2006).”  For all the latest, check out www.sergiomendestimeless.com.

Pearl Jam

Breaks Their Career Record

With #1 Positions at Modern Rock Radio and iTunes

New York -- Pearl Jam has begun their assault on both the airwaves and the internet with their first single,” World Wide Suicide” off of their forthcoming, self-titled album due out May 2. “World Wide Suicide” hit number #1 on the Modern Rock Chart this week. The single was released to radio only two weeks ago and not since U2’s “Discotheque,” nearly a decade ago, has a song moved so quickly to the top spot. The song entered the chart at #3 – the highest radio debut of the band’s 15-year career. The song is also the #1 most added track of the year at Modern, Active and Rock radio formats, and #1 in Audience for both Modern and Heritage Rock formats.

At the same time the song was offered to radio, Pearl Jam offered it as a limited unrestricted free download for fans through their website and through a partnership with myspace.com – an unprecedented move for a band of this stature. The song was downloaded over a quarter of a million times before being put up for sale on iTunes where it is currently ranked #1.

Upon the release of the album, the band is scheduled to begin their North American tour. For more information go to www.pearljam.com.

“COACHELLA”

FILM DVD

SET FOR RELEASE

APRIL 18 ON ANTI

Following a successful limited run engagement in major markets across America (including a Los Angeles premiere), COACHELLA will now be available for music fans across the country and around the world when the expanded DVD is released April 18th (Anti).

Music fans who’ve seen COACHELLA on the big screen know the film captures the magical sense of adventure that is unique to the COACHELLA VALLEY MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL, hailed as “The Best American Festival” by Rolling Stone, “...the nation's most respected rock festival” by the Los Angeles Times and  “probably the best festival in the world” by England’s NME.

Directed by Drew Thomas and produced by Goldenvoice, the COACHELLA DVD includes one classic performance after another from iconic headliners and wide-ranging, forward-looking artists and interviews with COACHELLA VALLEY MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL artists and fans amidst the vast green landscape framed by beautiful desert mountains.  Performers include:  The Arcade Fire, Belle & Sebastian, Björk, Bright Eyes, The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Fischerspooner, The Flaming Lips, Iggy & The Stooges, Kool Keith, The Mars Volta, Morrissey, Nu-Mark & Cut Chemist, Oasis, Pixies, The Polyphonic Spree, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Roni Size, Saul Williams, Spearhead, Squarepusher, The White Stripes and Zero 7 plus appearances from Beck and Josh Homme.

The DVD bonus features include interviews with previous COACHELLA VALLEY MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL performers: Belle and Sebastian, Ben Harper, Dresden Dolls, Kinky, Mos Def, Muse, Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis, Tenacious D, The Bravery, The Futureheads, The Libertines, Thievery Corp and You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, along with an extensive photo gallery from the festival’s groundbreaking first six years.

Here’s early critical praise for COACHELLA:

“...just might be the best rock film of its kind since ‘Woodstock.’ It's that inspiring, that expertly presented, its focus perfectly split between the music--real music that forges ahead and alters mainstream thinking--and the message, the cultural and sociopolitical context.”

--Ben Wener, ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 12/05

“...a blast, primarily because director Drew Thomas is less concerned with the talking heads than with the rocking heads. There is a little 'tween-song chit-chat--love it when Noel Gallagher dismisses political bands as doing little more than ‘singing the news’--but the music takes no back seat here. Every act featured (the Pixies, Bright Eyes, Björk, Radiohead, Oasis, the Flaming Lips, Kool Keith, Morrissey, Mars Volta…) performs one song in its entirety, and there's nary a bad cut. Wish there was a soundtrack too, 'cause that thing wouldn't leave the changer.”

                        --Robert Wilonsky, SF WEEKLY, 1/06

“...vibrant new movie features tons of excellent live footage...Among the highlights are the White Stripes, Björk, Radiohead and the Arcade Fire, as well as some amazing disc jockeys and electronic music...”

--Jeffery M. Anderson, SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER, 1/06

“Coachella deserves a place in the pantheon of great festival documentaries...captures the annual festival's ambiance by showing the uniqueness of its fans and their interaction with the performers and the interactive art pieces that help define the festival.”

                        --Bruce Fessier, DESERT SUN, 1/06

“...a skillfully rendered documentary...Spirited, genre-hopping live performances benefit from clever editing, smoothing transitions between Björk's floating vocal oddity, Radiohead's self-loathing art rock, Kool Keith's hip-hop goofing, Belle and Sebastian's twee clap-alongs, Squarepusher's glitchy techno--the list goes on.”

-- John Serba, THE GRAND RAPIDS PRESS, 1/06

“Documentarian Drew Thomas has captured the zeitgeist of the event...”

                        -- THE ALBUQUERQUE TRIBUNE, 2/06

Gnarls Barkley

Added to Lollapaollza; Debut Album "St. Elsewhere" Set for May

On the heels of announcing their being added to Coachella, Gnarls Barkley, the highly anticipated

collaboration from Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo, has been confirmed to perform on the main stage

 at this year’s Lollapalooza.

Lollapalooza will be held August 4-6 at Chicago's Grant Park. Gnarls will be performing on the main

 stage on Saturday the 5th.

Quickly becoming established as one of the strongest emerging talents of 2006, Gnarls Barkley

will join an already esteemed list of Lollapalooza performers including Kanye West, Red Hot Chili

Peppers, Flaming Lips, The Strokes to name a few.

Gnarls Barkley's debut album, titled "St. Elsewhere", will be released May 9th on Downtown/Atlantic

label. The album will be preceded by the April 10th release of the single  ‘Crazy’.

"Crazy" and "Go Go Gadget Gospel" can be heard at www.myspace.com/gnarlsbarkley

Danger Mouse is considered one of the most promising artists in music today. He produced Gorillaz

‘Demon Days’ album, for which he earned a Grammy nomination for Producer of the Year. He has

been honored as one of GQ’s ‘Men of the Year’; named “Eccentric Genius of the Year” by SPIN; and

hailed as "The Hottest Hip-Hop Producer in the World" by NME.  Danger Mouse gained

unprecedented notoriety after producing his infamous Grey Album, dubbed a 'bootleg masterpiece'

by GQ, awarded Entertainment Weekly’s Album of the Year and considered a watershed moment

 in music history.

Cee-Lo is a Grammy nominated artist and founding member of one of the leading Dirty South

super groups Goodie Mob. His debut solo album ‘Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections,’

with songs including ‘Gettin' Grown’ and ‘Closet Freak’ established him as an elite member of

next generation urban artists. He further cemented his acclaimed status with the release of

his follow up ‘Cee-Lo Green...is the Soul Machine’ CD featuring Pharrell and Ludacris. As a

live performer, Cee-Lo is known as one of the most potent starts in music, a one-of-a-kind

 force of nature.

The early word on Gnarls Barkley has been bubbling in the last few weeks in the UK, with the

leak of the song ‘Crazy’. Not yet even a white label, the song is being championed by Radio

One’s Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and Jo Wiley. BBC has called it "the hottest song of 2006" and

Arena magazine announced they are “sure the biggest single in the first half of this year will be

‘Crazy’.
