SUICIDE SQUAD – Review! (Spoiler Free)

The plot of Suicide Squad is pretty straight forward, it’s essentially a super-villain team-up movie starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Will Smith as Dead-Shot, with tons of other DC character appearances. It’s a colorful movie with a great sound track but there’s so much going on that it can be disorienting at times.

The movie picks up after the events of Batman v Superman and jumps right into it. There’s a good amount of time spent introducing characters, but it’s pretty cleverly done. I thought the pacing throughout was pretty good. There’s so much that happens though that I do feel like I need to see it again to catch everything, which isn’t exactly a problem in my book, because I found this movie to be very re-watchable.

Suicide Squad teamKatana was a total badass, Killer Croc was creepy, Amanda Waller was cunning and Boomerang was surprisingly hysterical. Jared Leto’s performance as The Joker is… different. He’s like an unstable mob boss whose brain is fried from too many drugs. Although I liked his performance, he’s not The Joker we’ve seen before. I think it’s too early to judge. There’s a lot of other characters that were forgettable, but I have to say Harley Quinn and Dead-Shot were on point. Will Smith actually made me care about Dead-Shot, and Margot Robbie embodied the spirit of Harley Quinn. Click here for a little background on each character.

As a DC fan, there’s a lot to love, but it’s definitely an entertaining movie either way. In a lot of ways this movie is the exact opposite of BvS – it’s not very deep, but if nothing else it’s fun. Don’t get me wrong, I actually liked BvS (especially the Director’s Cut), but you can’t complain about this one being too long, being too dramatic, or not having enough action. This feels closer in tone to Guardians of the Galaxy or Deadpool.

I do think it leaves you hanging in some areas: I wanted to see more character development, more back story, more Joker and specifically I really wanted to see more Batman – It leaves you wanting more, which might not be a bad thing considering we have a lot more DC movies coming over the next few years…

Ultimately, Suicide Squad is a fun, funny and mesmerizing roller coaster into the DC universe!
