Pink

Phoenix
Orden, 2005
Reunion albums are rarely pretty. This isn’t an exception.
Enjoyable enough Nephilim/Cult-influenced goth hampered by extremely
out-of-place vocals.

Ahab Rex
Blood On Blonde
Lens, 2006
Ahab Rex has one major thing going against him. He sounds like a
cross between classic MC 900 Foot Jesus and G. Love. While this
in itself has potential, BLOOD ON BLONDE is sadly just a soundalike
to the above-mentioned. Which is a true shame, since it certainly
does have some infectious hooks.

Paul Brill
Harpooner
Scarlet Shame, 2006
Interesting fourth full length from Paul Brill. At times reminiscent
of Thom Yorke, at others sounding like the song Brian Wilson never
wrote but should have, and yet at others giving a 4AD-esque sheen
to the sound, you cannot deny the man’s creativity and strengths.
The only downside is that the eclecticism DOES go a bit overboard.
Otherwise a perfect slice of avant pop to go next to your Radiohead
and Van Dyke Parks albums.

When The Lights Go Down
Progressive Global, 2006
If you are a Basement Jaxx fan you already own a superior version
of this. Generic dancefloor fodder with no redeeming qualities.

Men Women And Children

Reprise, 2006
I have to give them credit for being so spirited, but sadly, this
isn’t anything new. The discopunk/dancepunk thing has been
done better before. It’s not terrible, but it certainly pales
in comparison to !!! or Out Hud .

Echo Helstrom
The Veil
Self-released, 2006
Intriguing chamber rock. Along the lines of Rachel’s or GYBE
if those bands weren’t afraid to rock once in a while. A little
too experimental for most tastes (those who adhere to the guitars-bass-drums
formula are advised to stay far away), but worth it for a taste
of true rock/classical instrumentation fusion.

The
Working Title
About-Face
Universal, 2006
I hate to say it, but this just doesn’t stand out. Generic
heavy rock with whiny vocals and uninspired lyrics. I really hope
they improve; they at least have a neat guitar sound.

The End Of Silence
Ugly People Ugly Problems
Killer Puppy, 2006
Wow. This is one of THE most derivative bands. Everything from Godsmack
to Alice In Chains is referenced in this addition to the growing
roster of unnecessary nu-metal bands.

The Slats
Boom Patrol
Latest Flame, 2006
Excellent! This is an infectious combination of Sonic Youth/no wave-style
guitar work with balls-to-the-wall garage abandon. The mix works.
The vocals may be slightly intimidating (to call them "unique"
is an understatement), but as a whole this is one of the more enjoyable
guitar noise romps to come along in a while. Definitely a band destined
for great things, and an essential purchase for those who miss the
old SST/Touch & Go releases.

Formula Redux
Mundo Ciego
Universal, 2006
I really wanted to like this release. It’s very reminiscent
of prime Depeche Mode. Unfortunately, the reasons for my dislike
lie in the similarity. A fondness for DM is a great thing, but this
is a near carbon copy of their career since ULTRA, with a bit of
Metropolis influence for good measure. The potential is highly obvious,
but they need a sound of their own; the DM comparison can only get
them so far.
